Halloween I &II

scifiguy 10-17-2005, 03:38 PM Something Wicked This Way Comes
Poltergeist
Zorro 10-17-2005, 03:45 PM I defy any 5 year old to watch the original "Invaders From Mars" and not crap their pants.
And I don't have a religious bone in my body, but every time I watch "The Exorcist", I crap my pants.
Ohio_Southpaw 10-17-2005, 04:04 PM The Mud Monster: The only movie to keep me awake as a kid, scared the hell out of me
A Nightmare on Elm Street (before they went campy..)
John P 10-17-2005, 04:21 PM The Haunting.
The original, subtle, bone-chilling one, not the special effects festival of a remake. Best. Ghost story. EVAH!
The Innocents.
Coolly creepy. What's that one with Ray Milland? The Uninvited, or something like that?
For fun: The Legend of Hell House.
Kinda like the Haunting, but more, um, overtly scarey Hammer Film style.
Of course, any classic Vincent Price "Poe" film
PhilipMarlowe 10-17-2005, 04:34 PM Only for adults:
Don't Look Now- Nicholas Roeg made a gorgeous movie whose ending scared the bejebbus out of me. Not to mention Julie Christy's best nude scene.
Cat People- While I like the original, I love Paul Schrader's 80's remake. Creepy, great make-up, gorgeous photography of New orleans, and great music. Not to mention Natassia Kinski's best nude scene.
Carson Dyle 10-17-2005, 04:41 PM What's that one with Ray Milland? The Uninvited, or something like that?
Yeah, when I was growing up one of the local stations screened The Uninvited all the time. Haven't seen it in years, and I'm not sure how well it'd hold up, but I sure loved it back then -- especially the bit where Ray Milland flings a candelabra at the ghost... what was her name again?
Brent Gair 10-17-2005, 04:42 PM I regret having reached that unpleasant age where movies can't scare me anymore :(.
My favorite, and the last truly scary movie I saw is the original HALLOWEEN. It's been copied so many times that we forget what an impact it originally had. When I saw that in the theater the first time, it literally made me jump and gasp several times.
For kids, I figure you can't beat THE CRAWLING HAND (a cheap DVD from Rhino). Honestly, what could be more scary to a kid than a disembodied hand that gets loose in your house or in the family car?
Steve244 10-17-2005, 05:19 PM I dunno. "The Exorcist" scared the crap out of me when I was 15, but now the scariest part is the medical scenes. I rented it for the kidlets, they were intrigued, but had to stifle yawns. I want something to really traumatize them.
So far I've got "The Thing" (1982 version), "Halloween", and "The Innocents".
They enjoyed "Poltergeist", I enjoyed "Something Wicked This Way Comes", but they yawned.
Carson Dyle 10-17-2005, 05:25 PM I regret having reached that unpleasant age where movies can't scare me anymore :(.
Obviously you haven't seen Glitter.
Steve244 10-17-2005, 05:32 PM Obviously you haven't seen Glitter.
I only want to traumatize them, no permanent scars...
El Gato 10-17-2005, 06:01 PM Not gory scary, but suspenseful scary: The Others
And although a lot of people here have panned it, I still like The Blair Witch Project
Both should be OK for kids, with he suspenseful parts enough to traumatize without permanent scars.

Bruce Bishop 10-17-2005, 06:26 PM The only movie to actually give me a scared, creeped-out feeling for many, many years is The Grudge. Before that it has probably been about 25 years since a movie seemed actually scary to me.
Zombie_61 10-17-2005, 08:36 PM I regret having reached that unpleasant age where movies can't scare me anymore :(.I'm right there with you Brent! The last time I can actually remember being scared by a movie was "Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things" in 1972. Of course, it was my first zombie film and I was only 11 years old at the time...
If I ever get around to seeing "Fahrenheit 911", that might just do it.

Steve244 10-17-2005, 10:00 PM yeah, Aliens would disturb them, but is it really in keeping with the season?
Trek Ace 10-17-2005, 10:09 PM I don't know about the scariest movies, but the ones we (I) enjoy watching the most around Halloween are the classic Universal trilogy of monsters - Dracula, Frankenstein and The Wolf Man, including all of the sequels and crossovers, in chronological order, with Dracula being the first, and ending with Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein.
To me, it just doesn't get any better than that.
drewid142 10-17-2005, 10:43 PM I've seen it as an adult and it dodn't do much for me... but when I was a little kid I saw the old original 13 Ghosts and it scared the pooh out of me!
The-Nightsky 10-17-2005, 10:48 PM Cinderella scared the crap out of me. And did you guys ever see Dumbo. Little Elephants with big ears are terrifying. I couldn't watch anything above a G rating, otherwise I would have to sleep with the lights on and pull my teddy bear out of storage.
GLU Sniffah 10-17-2005, 10:51 PM yeah, Aliens would disturb them, but is it really in keeping with the season?
What better Monster for the season is there than the H.R. Geiger original?
If Halloween is about dressing up as just about anything, then why can't the Sci Fi Horror Genre be on the playlist?
The-Nightsky 10-17-2005, 10:55 PM seriously....the last movie that really scared me was the trilogy of terror with the little voodoo doll that came to life.....i was probly only 8 or 9 but i was terrified for weeks after that
GLU Sniffah 10-17-2005, 10:58 PM There's always the Full Moon Video stuff for the kids...
Like the 'Jack Deth' and 'Trancers' series...or the 'Puppet Master' series...or 'Demonic Toys'. :D
terryr 10-18-2005, 12:02 AM Rocky Horror is scary in its' own way.
GLU Sniffah 10-18-2005, 12:05 AM Rocky Horror is scary in its' own way.
Actually, in the home...it's just plain DUMB. This one only works in the theater with audience participation.
" Where's his neck? Where's his effing neck? " :D
You HAVE to have audience dialog...newspapers, rice, TP and squirt-bottles of water to really make it work.
scotpens 10-18-2005, 12:44 AM Even if you've reached the age where movies don't scare you anymore, you've still got to be just a little creeped out by Tod Browning's classic Freaks! And The Unknown with Lon Chaney (though perhaps it should have been called A Farewell to Arms!)*
*Sorry.
for the kids:
Creature from the Black Lagoon
Beast from 20 Thousand Fathoms
Invaders from Mars
Legend of Hell House
Them!
Abbott & Costello meet Frankenstein/Dracula
Young Frankenstein(Fraunkensteen)
Adults:
Alien
Excorcist
Seconds (obscure Rock Hudson flick)
John Carpenters "The Thing"
Freaks
Nightmare on Elm Street Series (odd numbered ones only)
John P 10-18-2005, 07:45 AM Has Glitter become the new Showgirls?
Zorro 10-18-2005, 09:08 AM Has Glitter become the new Showgirls?
No way it could be as good/bad as Showgirls!
PhilipMarlowe 10-18-2005, 09:29 AM No way it could be as good/bad as Showgirls!
I caught about 10 minutes of Glitter when it was playing on HBO, the brief bit I saw made Showgirls look like Citizen Kane. And Mariah Carey made Elizabeth Berkely's acting look like Meryl Streep's in comparison.
BTW, my two boys, who are usually totally disinterested in anything I liked as a kid, do love Valley of Gwangi, which has the hat trick of cowboys, horsies, and dinosaurs!
Steve244 10-18-2005, 09:38 AM Well here's what I've got coming for round one.
Bride of Chucky
Seed of Chucky
(kidlets made me, we've already watched parts 1-3. Oh well)
Halloween
The Amityville Horror (2005)
Mary Shelly's Frankenstein.
Time for another round between this and the 31st!
Glitter (http://www.netflix.com/MovieDisplay?movieid=60020792&trkid=189530) is available. shudder...
A Taylor 10-18-2005, 09:46 AM The Changeling with George C. Scott. Creepy.
Burnt Offerings - Oliver Reed and Karen Black. Creepy.
Steel Magnolias - Sally Field and Dolly Parton - Horrifying. Julia Roberts' teeth alone are enough to make me crap my pants.
Comedy of Terrors - Comedy with Peter Lorre, Vincent Price, Boris Karloff, Basil Rathbone.

Have you seen Seed of Chucky? I wouldn't let a little kid see it.
Steve244 10-18-2005, 01:39 PM Have you seen Seed of Chucky? I wouldn't let a little kid see it.
yikes, I haven't been paying attention. Ebert review. (http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20041111/REVIEWS/41110001/1023) Ahh well, what's a little puppet love?
rw2516 10-18-2005, 04:23 PM That Ebert review is the R rated version. The dvd is unrated but a definate NC-17 for sex.
John P 10-18-2005, 04:36 PM Karen Black. Creepy.
Indeed.
gruffydd 10-18-2005, 04:46 PM Yeah, when I was growing up one of the local stations screened The Uninvited all the time. Haven't seen it in years, and I'm not sure how well it'd hold up, but I sure loved it back then -- especially the bit where Ray Milland flings a candelabra at the ghost... what was her name again?
Carlotta I think.
Good movie, definitely holds up.
El Gato 10-18-2005, 04:46 PM The Glitter and Showgirls posts remind me that if you want a night of some real bad movies, you can't go wrong with:
Cocktail
Glitter
Showgirls
Ishtar
José
GLU Sniffah 10-18-2005, 05:37 PM It may not be scary...but it IS cheezy.
Why not put Streets of Fire on the playlist? You can sit aghast at Michael Pare's acting. Of course, that's balanced by Diane Lane's loveliness and Willam Dafoe's bad guy leader role.
Halloween material? Depends.
rw2516 10-18-2005, 05:46 PM I'm reminded of a pretty neat little horror flick, I MADMAN. Not a classic but a lot of fun. If you haven't seen it check it out. Lately I've been renting some of the direct-to-video horror titles, which I usually avoid like the plague, and a few are not half bad. It all started when I got my dvd of the classic Amicus movie Torture Garden. On it was the trailer for Frankenfish. This turkey had Sci-fi original written all over it but the trailer sold me. I actually enjoyed it. I understand this has aired on sci-fi, but if you haven't seen it uncut with all the gore and nudity, you haven't seen it. This led me to the movie which reminded me of I Madman, Tobe Hooper's remake of The Toolbox Murders. Although it went straight to video it is filmed in 1:85 ratio and the trailer mentions Dolby Digital Surround in Selected Theaters. Unlike the original which had all the murders right off the bat at the beginning of the film, here they are more evenly distributed throughout the movie. The first half was slow going but it picks up pretty good in the second half. If for nothing else this movie was worth it to discover Juliet Landau(daughter of Martin and Barbara Bain). I understand she is in several eps. of Buffy. I never watched the show but am tempted to check them out just to see more of this babe. The only drawback is in the deleted scenes. All the murders are played out in gory detail in the deleted scenes while more R rated in the movie. They should have just shown them uncut.
Today I picked up Undead. When I take it back I'm going to get Legion of the Dead. Anything with ancient tombs, an evil priestess. mummies, and Bruce Boxleitner as the sheriff can't totally suck can it?
terryr 10-19-2005, 03:11 PM Carnival Of Souls. Girl falls in water, weird things happen. Surprise ending.
ChrisW 10-19-2005, 05:27 PM Original Texas Chainsaw Massacre - Not overly gory, and a very tense ride.
much better than the remake !
hb
miniature sun 10-19-2005, 05:46 PM I agree with Nightsky....that voodoo doll that can't be killed...like an early Terminator...another one that messed with my head was The Wicker Man...especially the ending

"Ishtar"... that's really crossing the line ... :freak: ... How about a double feature with "Hudson Hawk".
"The horror...the horror..."
GLU Sniffah 10-19-2005, 07:31 PM Phantasm.
Steve244 10-20-2005, 11:58 AM Watched Scream (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0117571/) last night (HBO) it was a lot of fun.
It's almost a parody of slasher movies: the main characters sit down and watch Halloween at one point and list slasher movie "rules" (i.e. don't have sex or drink if you want to live, might be a good one to show the kids?) Henry Winkler is very funny.
El Gato 10-20-2005, 01:23 PM Have you played a card game called "Grave Robbers from Outer Space"? It's a horror/B-movie parody game and the cards contain your typical horror/B-movie characters and situations. The game itself is fun and the cards are hillarious. For adults it's a great game, but you can play it with kids provided you filter some of the cards for age appropriateness. I play a spinoff version, "Kung Fu Samurai on Giant Robot Island" (a Japanese movie parody version, 99% of the cards are cleaner) with my niece and nephew (12 and 10) and they love it.
José
Steve244 10-20-2005, 01:40 PM hmmm I was thinking you lost it until viewing the cards at the bottom of this page (http://www.zmangames.com/products/grave_robbers/grave_robbers.htm)...
Looks like fun.
