View Full Version : 10 Desert Island Movies
Zorro 10-12-2005, 10:30 PM Okay. 10 Movies. You've been separated from the rest of humanity and for the rest of your life you are limited to repeatedly watching only 10 movies of your choice. All decisions are final so select carefully. What would your choices be?
The Wizard of Oz
The Bank Dick
Invaders From Mars (1953)
To Kill a Mockingbird
2001: A Space Odyssey
Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid
Chinatown
Apocalypse Now
Blue Velvet
Goodfellas
terryr 10-13-2005, 07:38 AM I'm pretty sure I'd pick movies about surviving on a desert island. Lord of the Flies, the Challenge, Hell in the Pacific, Robinson Crusoe, .....Gilligans Island.

That's 12 movies. The hypothetical penalty for cheating on this hypothetical list is that you get limited to only one movie of my choice on the hypothetical island, which in your case would be The Punisher.

El Gato 10-13-2005, 06:31 PM OK, I know you've said movies, but with modern technology, you can have movies on various media. If I opt to have the movies on DVDs, would that open the door to have other types of video with you provided they're on DVDs? Say, boxed seasons of TV shows?
José
John P 10-13-2005, 06:52 PM The Blue Lagoon.
Lost, season 1.
ummm....

Jose, I'd rather keep the list to movies but if you list TV shows whatamIgonnado? Make you watch The Punisher for the rest of your life?:)
El Gato 10-13-2005, 10:03 PM NOooooooooooooooooooo! Not The Punisher!
OK, I'll play by the rules. Here are the 10 movies I'd take with me:
1. ST II: TWOK
2. ST IV: TVH
3. ST VI: TUC
4. Galaxy Quest
5. ST IV: ANH
6: ST V: TESB
7: ST VI: ROTJ
8: ST III: ROTS
9. Airplane!
10. There's Something About Mary
Yes, there are classier movies that I love (Casablanca, Citizen Kane, Open Your Eyes, Count of Monte Cristo, Gattaca, Shawshank Redemption), but I'm going for longevity. If I'm stuck on an island for the rest of my life and I have no other distractions with me (like, say my wife or Salma Hayek, Halle Berry, SMG, Grace Park or Liz Phair), I need movies I would never get tired of watching. That list up there I think does the job. I've stopped counting the number of times I've seen TWOK, but it's got to be in the 30-something range by now.

But only if Spider-man 1&2 and Kill Bill 1&2 came in gift sets.
HA! GOTCHA ON THAT ONE!
The Batman 10-14-2005, 12:15 AM In no particular order:
1. It's a Wonderful Life
2. The Wizard of Oz
3. Batman Begins
4. Dracula (1931 )
5. The Black Cat ( 1933 )
6. Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein
7. Fantastic Voyage
8. To Kill a Mockingbird
9. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
10. The Music Man
I might be persuaded to flip a coin to eliminate one of the musicals in order to make room for my favorite Marx Bros. movie: Monkey Business.

Capt_L_Hogthrob 10-14-2005, 09:23 AM Wouldn't you need something called, oh I don't know......ELECTRICITY? Kinda difficult to watch anything without it. That is unless you have ability to make a generator out of Coconuts and bananas like the professor does on Gilligan's Island! I'd love to see that set up....lol

Ohio_Southpaw 10-14-2005, 03:55 PM I don't know about the rest of you primitive life forms, but I'd personally have a multi-phasic, sub-micron fusion generator for all my power needs. Gotta have plenty of hot water for the 42 Hooter Girls stranded on the island with me.......
On second thought, I won't be requiring my 10 movies after all.
i was just gonna comment , "what ?!!? no porn movies ?
hb

Richard Compton 10-15-2005, 08:59 PM What beck said. Most of these movies have no good nude scenes. Come on, no women.....ever!

King Kong (the original, natch)
Bringing up Baby
Forbidden Planet
Some Like It Hot
Cabaret
Blazing Saddles
Zelig
This Is Spinal Tap
I'm surprised no one's mentioned Cast Away with Tom Hanks. From that picture, you could actually learn a thing or two about surviving on an uninhabited island.

What would be the point? If you're hungry, do you want to look at pictures of food?

Ohio_Southpaw 10-16-2005, 06:32 PM You forgot The Black Stallion.
hhmmmm.......it neither takes place on an island, or anywhere remotely near an island, and no castaways whatsoever...so.. Denied!
Thank you for your submission :)
Capt_L_Hogthrob 10-16-2005, 07:15 PM Hey! That sounds like my last credit report!......DENIED!!!

While I think Cast Away's a great movie, I think it would depress me too much. It would make me realize that the world didn't stop the moment I was stranded on that #%@^#$ island.
José
big-dog 10-17-2005, 12:43 AM How about Castaway, with Oliver Reed and Amanda Donohoe, or something close? Amanda fully nude most of the time. Can't be bad. The original Swept Away?

I take it you've never actually seen The Black Stallion. Here's the plot description taken from the IMDB:
"While traveling with his father, young Alec becomes fascinated by a mysterious Arabian stallion that is brought on board and stabled in the ship he is sailing on. When the ship tragically sinks both he and the horse survive only to be stranded on..."
wait for it--
"...a deserted island."
Your welcome! :)
Richard Compton 10-17-2005, 03:50 AM What would be the point? If you're hungry, do you want to look at pictures of food?
If looking at pictures of food and rubbing my belly made me feel full, maybe! :)

 I happily stand corrected. I did look at IMDB, but that is not the description of the film I read. Going back and checking my history, Mr. Intelligent here typed in Black BEAUTY... you have my humble apologies and I shall now go beat myself about the head with a pugel stick.
gruffydd 10-18-2005, 01:21 PM I was seemingly doing the right thing and not chiming in on this post, but maybe I'm kind of irritated now so I will bring down the hammer.
The whole idea of ranking movies or even believing for one second that I could narrow down to some repeatedly watched "favorites" (that, presumably, I would then be repeatedly watching even more into ungodly infinity out there on that island?) is a no-go. So I can't participate in this madness.
Brutal? Perhaps. But such is my part-time nature.
