View Full Version : New Carpet Track In CT!!!!!
speed321 10-04-2005, 07:49 AM I just wanted to announce that SpeedZone Hobbies has relocated its store from Cromwell, Ct to 25 Laurel Road Rocky Hill, CT 06067. The relocation has allowed for a much larger indoor Track. It is 83' x 32'. We will be racing all classes and will soon post the schedule. I have been approached about oval racing and I need some feedback as to what night works for the racers. You can visit my website at www.speedzonerc.com and post on my forums page with a reply. It is located under the Team SpeedZone section. I will have the carpet installed the beginning of November. I am installing a sub floor 1st and this will begin in about a week.

MIKE VALENTINE 10-05-2005, 10:16 AM Monday Divorce
speed321 10-06-2005, 06:03 PM I could run Monday nights if I see a huge interest!!!!!
ovalrc 10-06-2005, 06:49 PM I'm with Mike, we'll all be going home to the locks being changed and be looking for a new place to live.
speed321 10-06-2005, 10:49 PM Just a option!!!
THE BAT 10-06-2005, 10:52 PM Unless you want to compete with the other tracks friday or monday would be the only options.Actually monday night in manchester was a good turnout.
ovalrc 10-07-2005, 09:04 AM If it spawns good racing the crowds will come.
speed321 10-08-2005, 09:17 PM We will see I will keep all of the option open. I appreciate the feedback guys. I hope to get more input or even if you all could spread the word I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks
bud3738 10-09-2005, 01:38 PM how far is this track from Providence R.I. or Boston Mass......
Jason Lambert 10-09-2005, 10:28 PM Bud, not sure how far it is.. I'd say it's roughly an hour from k/n, but because of location, I suspect that theres' alternate routes to get you there quicker.
I think Friday and Monday night would probably be the best days to race, it wouldn't interfere with the other tracks in the area, which is probably the best case situation, and big race events will just have to be a weekend thing, try to schedule around what is already planned the best you can.
Anchor2 10-10-2005, 10:22 AM Looking at the pictures on the website, what type of surface is that? Eyes are getting old
Anchor
speed321 10-11-2005, 03:59 AM I hear you there. I will do my best on the schedule. It looks as though Monday Nights will be the best but I will let you all know what night I finally choose. Just keep spreading the word so I can get more input. It is about 45 mins from K&N.
Thanks
MIKE VALENTINE 10-13-2005, 12:51 PM any more news, on when they will start racing, and is the track done?
speed321 10-13-2005, 02:18 PM I just received my delivery of wood for the sub floor today. The Track will be finished No later than Nov. 15th.
Anchor2 I am installing a sub Floor and I will be having Ozite carpet installed shortly after.
MIKE VALENTINE 10-27-2005, 09:30 AM speed321 do you have the sub floor done, just wondering if you still plan to make nov 15 completion. looking forward to racing their. Mike
Mayhem 10-27-2005, 10:21 AM Just a suggestion many tracks have run into in the past. If you schedule racing on a weeknight, the only racing crowd you will get is a small core of regulars who live close enough to the track to make the drive and and get there in time through traffic etc.
You must have weekend racing if you are in it for the long run IMHO, and share the racers with the other weekend tracks. Though convenient for the few that want weeknight racing, I think you need to look at the bigger picture. All the tracks that had weeknight racing are now gone, the weekend racing tracks are still here. The 6 or 7 guys that live withing 45 mins of the track will not be enought to support it over the long haul. Weeknight racing can work, but you must also offer weekend racing for outsiders if you plan to grow. The tracks that had weeknight racing all all gone now, think of the big picture....
ovalrc 10-27-2005, 11:15 AM Getting new people into the hobby is going to be a big part of success or failure. The track needs to be promoted to draw attention to itself. A new track needs to bring in it's own new racers, can't get them from the existing tracks. Without this your just thinning out the fields and noone gains from it. I will do my best to support any new track that comes in, but not at the price of loosing a track we already have. I want to see new tracks come in and bring in new racers, think of the size of the fields when a big race is held, maybe even get back to where we were 10 years ago when it was 100 car fields for every big race.
Jason Lambert 10-27-2005, 12:06 PM I agree with oval, and mayhem at the same time. I do want to see another track in the area, but I am not going to stop going to the tracks I do now to go to the new one. A racing schedule needs to me made.. for example, if oval is raced on saturday mornings, say teh track opens at 7, racing starts at 10, we could be done in time to go to enfield to run that same night. I think a weekday of racing and pratice for the oval would be good too.. but I understand that the track needs to be utilized the best possible ways. Running the roadcourse in teh same direction as the oval would help this too, as the track would not need the time to "come in" ofr the differnent types of racing as well.. something to think about.
speed321 10-28-2005, 02:41 PM I have to agree with you all. I do plan to race on the weekends and weeknights as well. It is impossible to grow otherwise. I am just trying to get a feel for what will work for others as far as getting you all to come down to my facility. I would never ask anyone to abandon their current facility in any way. I just want to make it work for everyone. It looks as though Sundays are available for weekend racing. I am getting a bunch of feedback for Saturday touring racings. I will have the schedule posted soon but keep the ideas coming. If a Saturday morning works for you all I will have to maybe do touring on Sundays but over the next few weeks I will be able to make this decision.
The sub floor is 95% done. It will be completed this weekend and the carpet is scheduled for delivery or Tuesday or Wednesday next week. So yes I am on schedule things are going great.
PUF19 10-28-2005, 02:44 PM great news, please keep us posted.
Nick
speed321 10-28-2005, 02:58 PM No Problem. I am serious though I really need an answer about the weekend racing. Talk it over with the guys you race with so I can get a better feel for what day. I could do a Saturday or Sunday morning I could open early. Just keep me posted I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,
SpeedZone Hobbies
speed321 11-03-2005, 06:34 PM The carpet has arrived today. I will keep you all posted as to when it is installed.
rickster58 11-07-2005, 01:16 PM Kickin background music on the website. Who is the band?
Rick<><
speed321 11-08-2005, 09:00 AM Not sure, my web guy did all that. I will find out for you.
MIKE VALENTINE 11-11-2005, 10:40 AM 4 days left!! what are your weekend hours, and when do you plan to have an oval layout down, compared to a roadcourse.
speed321 11-11-2005, 06:17 PM Well my carpet guy only installs on the weekend so that messes up my schedule a bit but he is installing it Sunday. As far as the oval track that is really simple to prep so that racing can start next week.
NHRCRACER 11-13-2005, 07:28 PM If you run oval on Sat. or Sun. morning, I'll be there to race.
Some things that I'd like (I speak only for myself):
> I'd like to run only two qualifiers so race day takes up less of my time.
> I'd like to at least try running two 75-lap qualifiers and a 100-lap main with a set gearing rule. You pick a small range of pinions and a single spur. It's very easy to tech). On a short track, a 4-cell stock-powered car can run 100 laps in about 6 minutes. You can even have a battery rule for only 3300 and under.
> Run a bunch of short point series.
I believe this would offer something different than the other tracks and allow for some laid back, fun racing. Just my two pennies.
speed321 11-14-2005, 08:51 AM NHRCRACER thanks for the input. I am working on having the rules posted by next week. As far as gearing goes I have never ran a pan car before personally so I guess I will have to see what seems to work for you guys if I go that route. It looks as though Sunday Mornings/ Afternoons will work.
The carpet is down and we will begin racing this week, probably Thursday will be the 1st race....
NHRCRACER 11-14-2005, 01:36 PM Great. I'll be by to check it out.
MIKE VALENTINE 11-21-2005, 09:38 AM anybody tuen any laps yet on the track?
rickster58 11-21-2005, 09:46 AM From the pics on the website it apears that there are support poles that would interfere with an oval setup. Is that going to be a problem?
Rick<><
NHRCRACER 11-21-2005, 10:08 AM I went and checked out the track. It's a nice setup with a well stocked store. For oval, I would suggest running inside the support poles and not using that portion of the track. For racing, I'd rather have a smaller track with wider lanes. It would be great if we could get an oval program going on Sunday morning.
speed321 11-22-2005, 01:13 PM Thanks NHRCRACER.... It was great meeting you. As far as the poles go I don’t see it being a problem. But it is truly up to you guys to make that call. Come down on a Sunday and race and then make that call. I hope you all try to come down and check it out at least. I currently have Sundays for pan cars. Check out www.speedzonerc.com for more race details.
PUF19 11-22-2005, 02:26 PM what time sunday?? and the site says tuesday for pan cars??
NHRCRACER 11-22-2005, 05:06 PM I'd be game to run some laps or race on Sunday. What time do doors open?
speed321 11-23-2005, 04:57 PM Thanks PUF19 I will update this soon. Doors open at 10am.
NHRCRACER 11-27-2005, 01:22 AM I'd be game to run some laps or race on Sunday. What time do doors open?
It turns out that I can't make it Sunday to run some laps. If anyone goes, please let us know how you like it. From what I saw, the track surface looked really good.
Jason Lambert 11-27-2005, 05:11 PM I would suggest running 4 minute heats.... if you start off running some other type of race time, you are only going to seperate yourself from the reat of the tracks.. not somethign you want to do. Also, the infield, I am not sure about as I have not seent eh track yet, but I am sure that a wider infield would provide for better racing them a hairpin.. that type of infield design usually leads to more corner entry accidents, guys trying to go in too tight to make a pass and hitting other cars. A wider more sweeping corner will promote better racing.... works out that way everywhere. Besides, if you cut out a couple feet of the inner straitaway, trust me, most people won't even realize iot, you really shouldn't be driving around that low anyway.
I will try take a ride over this week, see what he place looks like and hopefully make it down next weekend to run some.
midgetracer81 12-12-2005, 07:07 PM Has anyone run this track yet Whats it like.

"I had the pleaseure today of racing at Speedzone. I ran my pan car. I dont know why none of the oval guys havent made it out there. It is worth it to check it out. I had alot of fun and beleive it or not it is a fast track. I would say it is a K&N track but flat. Long straight aways. Roll out is pretty close to K&N. I even ran the car as a sedan car, and it hooked up great. Dave the owner I would rate as top notch, more than happy to set up the track as oval for me and plenty of parts on hand,if not will order whatever you want. The racers there were cool to chat with. The pole situation in my opinion is not that big of a deal. With the help of us oval guys to bring Ideas to dave I am sure it would be a great place to race on a regular basis. Plenty of pit space in front and back. I will be there again real soon. "
This was left under the onroad board.
speed321 12-19-2005, 09:00 AM Just to let you all know I am working on a new rail system that will be completed in about two weeks.
Go4iT 12-19-2005, 09:32 AM Dave, the track looks awsome! Nice job. Some of the comments posted here are good suggestions, wider lanes, smoother turns. Looks like you have some long straights for some high speed action. What are the overall carpet dimensions (Lg x Wd) and what are the Oval track layout dimensions w/lane width? Thanks in advance...
MIKE VALENTINE 12-28-2005, 03:39 PM has their been any oval racing on the track yet, not just practice?
omnis85 01-05-2006, 01:04 AM I dont think there has been. I havent been up there to do oval since that first time and was told people only stoped by. Waiting to see how the new rail system comes out and if we can get some people together on a sunday to try it out and come up with some Ideas for layout. Wouldnt hurt. I noticed Nick had put speedzone on his list for the tour. Hopefuly some racers could show up to run and get some races on the track to set the stage for that race event.
