View Full Version : Kids Go Kart
T@sound-xtreme 10-03-2005, 04:21 PM Hey guys im new here.
As of last night i think my kid blew his powersport 6.5 hp motor on his go-kart. It kept wanting to die ,out, i checked the oil, it was a bit low, so i added some more back at the house, then went drove back out to the field, when i first took off it made a clak clak clak noise, almost liek the connecting rod was hitting something, lots of white smoke was pouring out, I assume from excess burning off? Well i got there, and he started riding agian, only to hear that awful noise, now it wasnt constant, just every now and then, i think mainly when he let of the gas a bit. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Tyler
bugman 10-03-2005, 05:42 PM ok, how low was the oil? it sounds internal
scrench 10-03-2005, 08:30 PM if its a tech engine take the valve cover off and check the valve retainer have seen a few come off
T@sound-xtreme 10-04-2005, 07:38 AM ok, how low was the oil? it sounds internal
It Def is interneal, oil was barely at the fill spot on the dipstick.
Also when he was driving it, it would make that claking noise, and a ton of white smoke would come out, if that helps diagnose.

bugman 10-04-2005, 02:19 PM well you can check what scrench said above...... as for the oil, if it was in the operating range....its ok, if it was barely reading, its not.
T@sound-xtreme 10-05-2005, 09:21 AM ok cool, well new news, I have found an engine, theres buddy of mine who owns a coffee shop, his mikmak races go karts with his kids, and he said he just took on off, that had 5 races on it, and its worth $1000 new, and he would give it to him for $175. Said something about it was a 5 horse pushing around 10-12 hp, tuned very nicely. So should i jump on it? How much could i sell the 6.5 hp i have now for? It still runs, just every now and then makes a noise. Ill pull the valve cover off tonight and get a pic.
Thanks,
Tyler
bugman 10-05-2005, 01:34 PM probablly not much for yours, as for the other engine, yeah its a great deal, but its for a kid right? don't need that much hp.......
T@sound-xtreme 10-05-2005, 03:56 PM kids 8 now, be 9 jan 23rd.
Think i could get $100 for it?
If it is just the valve retainer, wouldnt it not run at all, i would think the valve would halt all things moving if that spring was unleashed.
Tyler
bugman 10-05-2005, 08:51 PM nope, unless it was without any problems, maybe $100. or if the problem isn't serious....maybe, i mean you wouldn't want to pay 100 bucks for something that grenades a couple days later?. as for a new engine, you could try e bay, or even search around for tiller engines, etc. stuff that hasn't had much use. thats a little more tame.

"i think my kid blew his powersport 6.5 hp motor " i didnt realise that it still ran no it will not run if a valve gets sucked but it could have slipped or even bent a rocker arm and still run a little ,,,i would buy the 1000 $ engine that must be a good friend to sell a 1k engine for 175 $ hard to get a carburator and a flywheel key for under 200..if it were me i would have to tear into the tech just to see what was wrong also would like to know what was in that engine to make it worth so much must have a gold piston lol -in it find out and post it if you can
T@sound-xtreme 10-06-2005, 08:33 AM Ok, yes the motor is still running, running very strong, infact you wouldnt know anything was wrong with it , except the clak clak clak, every so often, its not a constant noise. It doesnt happen every time _______(insert action here) happens, its random, and then quickly goes away. If i over filled the oil what would that do?
As for the $1000 motor for $175. This is what he told me about it.(keep in mind the milkman and Ray the coffee shop owner are good friends, he was going to give ray a free Go-kart  but sold it before ray found out)
He said that the motor was from his kids racing go kart(on road course type) and that it had better rod, piston, carb, and exhaust. I guess it took his kids kart up to 75-80mph, and that for just putting around in the yard it would be fine for us to use. So im guessing its pretty modded. I can try and find out exactly.
Thanks,
Tyler
scrench 10-06-2005, 07:07 PM clak clak clak might be the clutch , take the chain off and see if you can make it do it , it might not be the engine ,, if you over fill it with oil it will make it smoke and its not good for the engine the crankshaft will slap the oil in the crankcase not good for it , if it was me i would just run it if something was loose in the engine i would think it would be heard all the time , if it idles fast the clutch will make a ping ping sound kinda like a bell
T@sound-xtreme 10-07-2005, 08:10 AM well it is a new clutch, im going to drian the fluid tonight and start all over with it, how much should go in there?
Thanks agian for all the help guys,
Tyler
bugman 10-07-2005, 02:59 PM you can take the clutch off and try it then.....as for the oil, make sure its the right kind, and fill some, then check the dipstick, then fill a little more and keep checking till its on the full line. unless it has no dipstick, then it should be till overflowing.
T@sound-xtreme 10-11-2005, 08:34 AM Well i found the problem, you guys are never ganna guess. I couldnt belive it.
It was the whole recoil assembly doing that.
It was coming loose, i found this out after i changed the oil and ran it for about 10 mins and it didnt make a noise, so i knew the motor would be ok now. I then got the kid on it and he started riding around when the recoil cover came off, which lead to that awful noise. It was grabbing the recoil plate off and on making that noise, very odd.
I got everything tightened back up real nice, and no problems at all.
Thanks everyone for your help.
Thanks
Tyler
bugman 10-11-2005, 05:40 PM weird.....you can put some blue threadlocker on it if it does it again. red would be kinda too strong.
