I had never heard of them either until getting my copy of TCM today. I had to order a set though, when I saw 68 Impala SS, that was all it took! As the owner of a 68, I have been waiting for a 1/64 scale casting forever! Hopefully, it will be as good as I am anticipating! Boy, I am getting spoiled! first JL is doing a 69 Impala, now Greenlight a 68!

Yes, isn't that a funny coincidence.

Metal base, real rubber tires and a Indianna business...

When you get this set, can you please do a photo side by side comparison and post it here?

Thanks

They actually got their start doing promotional pices for the Indy 500 - they only have 4 othercastings (pther than indy cars) that have ever been released.

Navigator, Corvette, NYPD Expedition and the mini - that is refered to as the New York collection on their site.

While they continue to do their Indy stuff it looks like they are testing the waters with other diecast. The Autobahn collection looks nice except the Z3 is really a z4. Be interesting to see where this company goes.

The quality is decent - not the best ceratinly there is worse out there. I have 4 of the NYPD Trucks in my collection. Scale is exact with MB, etc. They look very much like Motormax knockoffs to be honest.

Went back and looked at these - I believe they are Motormax repackaged with Real shoes. At least the standard cars are.

Do you own a '68 Impala SS ??? I've been lucky enough to see a few of those over the years. Rare car!

Greenlight is a distributor. They use other manufacturers casting. They did the SSR pace truck and it is a Johnny Lightning casting. In fact their Indy/IRL car castings is the old JL casting without the JL name on the base. Their 1/18 cars may be Maisto as were the vehicles "city lights or something like that", that dipstick mentioned.

My 68 is a standard Impala Convertible with bench seat and column shift, not an SS. Same for my 69. It was my first car, bought it at age 16 and have kept it 30 years now.

I'll post a picture of the Greenlight Muscle Cars when they arrive. I think they are scheduled to ship sometime before Christmas.

The man who runs Greenlight has had JL links since before I was there: he was an outside sales guy. He has always had close ties to Indianapolis Motor Speedway (I think--not sure--he worked there once), and was instrumental in getting a number of IRL-related projects done. I believe he also had commissioned those six Roto Rooter service vans (with the red Cragars) a couple of years ago also. Some fine work has resulted from his involvement.

He is now branching out with his own set of castings. I do not know what, or if any, ties remain with JL at this point.

Greenlight actually had the irl car retooled (I think it was in '02?), and licensed the JL name for one year. Then dropped the license and went with their own brand Greenlight. Thats why you saw JL on the newer irl casting the first year it was out.
The IRL chassis prior to that, was horribly outdated, still sporting the 'sharkfin'.

Their 1/18th indy stuff is pretty accurate, and includes driver helmet graphics to boot.

The owner used to work for Indianapolis Motor Speedway for quite a few years, before going out on his own.

I've been doing their IRL, haulers, and city wheels layouts/designs. Hard for me to say on quality, I'm not really a collector. But they've been wanting small details added to their products that I enjoy adding/creating (license plates, real-life details/badging, etc.)

That 67 GTO in the pic looks plain. The JL version is so much better looking. Thier for I'm not holding my breath on the others. I'll pass judgment now and say I'll pass on all. Thank you.

They sound good to me! Finally, someone will be making the '70 Mustang as a convertible! Will these be available at retail (and if so what stores?), or only online?

If so, will any dealers here be carrying them?

 And if you're doing the details, these cars will come out beautifully.

Id like to agree. But retools are not our of the question. I dont want to get into details with that comment, but many of the casting in their non-irl stuff doesn't seem to be up to pre-rc2 buyout JL snuff. If that makes any sense. Again, Im not a collector, so y'all may think different.

Hey Rob,

How's it going? You and I met at Playing Mantis along with Art and it's been a while since we last talked. I did all the research and design and still do on the JL products for RC2.

Take care,

Nice to see somebody with RC2/JL credentials still checks in on this board.

Although there is a noted silence from the powers that be, whenever anybody here asks about the '05 Fest Cars...

I try to pop on here every once in a while.

As far as the Lightning Fest cars go, I checked into them last week and they are finally at our docks as of late last week. I'm not sure how long it will take for them to get to Oak Brook and then distributed. They are on the way though.

The guy that runs Greenlight also handles Die Cast Alley and is creating this venue to fill the need in the marketplace that JL is botching. He has close ties to Tom Lowe and I believe he will be using the same factory or at least the same agent that JL used in it's later years. My guess is that he will be trying to duplicate the quality and CUSTOMER SERVICE that JL used to provide. I am looking forward to seeing his castings and many more. Hurrah for the little guy! Grab a slingshot and let fly.

RPM, it nice to see your name again. You did a great job with so many of the JL designs!

I thought the Fest cars were in customs?????

It takes about a week to train them into Chicago from the docks and then they will send them up to Dyersville to ship back to the Chicago area to Rob's. 9 to 11 days is when I bet they finally show up!

If thats the case. Then maybe I'll give them a try. Who knows, if RC2's quality keeps going down hill. These might be the new thing.

Tony,
I heard you moved/continued on with RC2! Still got that car? lol I still laugh thinking about that chick cussing us out for no reason.

Sue still calls me every once in a while (friday morning phone calls as we liked to call it)

RC2 dropped me, but I'm doing stuff for greenlight, and the occasional layouts/transfers for Action or RC2's dragster lines as far as the diecast work goes...
Don't usually post much lol been a member since 2000 and only a hundred posts so far!
But I'm usually lingering

Thank for the info Dave.

More questions:

Anyone know if these will be available in retail stores?

Will their website ever be updated? (it's been 1/2 a year)

Message board in the future?

What will set these cars apart from JL if they are made at the same factory?

Greenlight has been around for years as many have said above.

I first met Kevin at the Indy Speedway before he left and started his own licensing company. He did extensive work for JL and continued to help JL for years. He put together the Limited Edition IRL cars in a joing effort for JL and the Speedway. then when the JL casting became to old Kevin started Greenlight with his own 1/64th IRL Casting.

After helping Jada with some programs and many other diecast companies Greenlight has moved into a much more direct manufacturing level with the Corvettes, Pace Car and Muscle Car Garage Series. All original castings with a ton of Detail. Kevin is a very detail oriantated guy. His Love of cars and the speedway show in evey conversation.

Talking with him at the iHobby Show over the prototype Muscle Car Garage cars his attention to detail and the small changes he was making I think will make this line very collectible. He was very cafefull to do castings that have not been done before but filling the small voids inbetween years and models.

The cars are VERY LIMITED EDITIONS and are Hobby Only right now. I am not sure if future releases will stay this way or if at some point you will see these at the Mass but I would think 2007 at the earliest if that happens.

For the first release of Muscle Car Garge to be 6 castings in 2 colors with a production run of 2,500 sets sure say TRUE COLLECTOR AND A MUST HAVE in my eyes.

We are proud to join Greenlight as a fullline distributor and have the cars on our site now. We also have a wholesale program for the line.

Have fun,
Fred

What are the real chances of these selling out? Are they sold in sets only? I would like to get the GTO's, but before shelling out 5 clams apiece. I would like a better look at em. Some close-ups maybe.

PMS,
Kevin is a cool guy. I have know him for a while and it is great to see him do his own line. I hope we can help him grow the distribution. If th elast gew days are anything like the future he will be very happy.

To say collectors and dealers have gotten on board would be a huge understatement.

Have fun,

hmm I want the 68 impala..........my grandma had one, she gave it my brother, he fixed it up, painted etc, it was a 2 door but not the fast back, just a 307 powerglide

I knew a guy 20 years ago that had a 68 SS fastback with the hottest 427 engine, it was low miles and mint, he bought it new, he hardly ever drove it
