I've only read a few reviews for "Serenity" and for the most part they're positive. Our local paper gave it 3 out of 5 stars but a mainly positive review.

It seems that the success of the movie rests on the theatres and the competition and neither looks good.

Locally, "Serenity" is only playing in 1 theater per multiplex as opposed to "Into the Blue," "Flightplan," and "History of Violence" which are generally playing in 2 theaters per multiplex.

Given the choice of Jessica Alba in a bikini or a graphic David Cronenberg thriller, your average movie goer (who's ignorant of "Firefly") is not probably going to pick "Serenity."

What happened to the publicity blitz?

Prediction: "Serenity" will place #3 on the box office returns next week and possibly hold it's own for 2 more weeks through word of mouth. But it'll be gone in 4 weeks.

Not so shiny.

Wel hopefully word of mouth will make the attendance grow.

And hopefully the positive reviews will make people consider it over the others.

I was pleasantly surprised when I called our multi-plex theater, they only have 1 BIG screen and 19 smaller ones, but they're showing Serenity twice on the big one tonight. I really had assumed "Out of the Blue" or "History of Violence" would get the good screen.

Just finished watching Serentiy at our local movieplex. I was pleasantly surprised at the number of folks watching the 10:55 matinee. The movie was very enjoyable, one of the better ones put out this year. They explain everything quite well, so a Serenity "virgin" won't be confused. I especially like the homage to Forbidden Planet (check out the numbers on the research ship). BTW - River kicks some serious butt. All in all, I give it two thumbs up.

Just watched "Serenity" and think it should be easy enough for non-"Firefly" watchers to follow the plot. They'll know there's some history betwixt the characters - when is there not in a really good movie? - but they'll have no problems not having seen it, methinks.

That being said, I agree that I thought there'd still be all those phenomenal commercials all week long that we'd been seeing for WEEKS before. I've seen maybe one and purposely watched some regular programming this week just to catch commercials - and I make a point of not watching much network TV. Hopefully, tho, it'll make more than enough to justify it's expense - whether that means we see a sequel or not. I want Joss Whedon to give us more of his genius in the form of movies like this. If he does well at the box office with this, we'll see more, one can hope.

What I actually really and truly HOPE we get out of this other than that is that a whole slew of executives from FOX TV get fired - those that ain't already had that - over the idiot choices that were made over the canceling of this great television show.
