View Full Version : No sequels for FireFly...
heiki 09-28-2005, 10:20 AM Just got done reading the companion movie book of the Serenity movie. They tie up the series loose ends, Rivers issues, where the Reavers come from, what happens to members of the crew.
Won't spoil it for anybody but JohnP but the movie is set to have the crew go in different directions by the end. I'll say more if people can't wait.
The script shows a strong story and it hits hard. What happens to the crew enriches the storyline but at a great cost.
It looks like this will be a remembered movie.
A Taylor 09-28-2005, 12:13 PM Betcha there will be a sequel.
If Serenity is #1 this weekend.
The cast is signed for 3 movies, and having seen the film a few weeks ago, the ending works just fine as a set up for another film.... not that anything is left unresolved, but the story of the big damn heroes could certainly continue.

Nighteagle2001 09-28-2005, 03:25 PM Even though the cast has signed on for a trilogy, That doesn't mean its a lock. I like Joss' idea of tying up loose ends just in case the numbers don't justify another 2 movies. Thats all the more reason to see Serenity twice :)
Styrofoam_Guy 09-28-2005, 04:55 PM Loose ends? Not even close
What about Book's background? (I have seen the movie twice already FYI)
and Inara. Why did she chose the ship?
More of Jaynes background?

Just based on the TV series:
Book is a former government official, probably in the military or intelligence who didn't like what he was so became a priest to make amends.
Inara chose the ship because she thought she would have more leverage than with a more successful, legitimate crew.
Jayne was a hired thug who thought he'd get a better deal working for Mal.
What more do you want to know?
TAY666 09-28-2005, 09:35 PM Yes, those are all very probable explanations.
The point is, there is plenty of material for more stories there.
I too like the fact that they tie things up with the movie.
Just in case it doesn't do good enough to justify a sequel then we have a complete story.
But if the studio wants more, there is plenty to work with.
Nighteagle2001 09-29-2005, 12:38 AM I never said that there wasn't plenty of material for possible future movies.
This is one of those cases where a sequel wouldn't necessarily continue the story, just be "yet another adventure of the Serenity and her crew"...more in the James Bond theme - same characters, new story - rather than picking up exactly where the previous film left off.
Styrofoam_Guy 09-29-2005, 09:17 AM Yes one part of the crew story is basially finished and they can concentrate on another character when they do a sequel :)
Personally I would like a story about Book.
John P 09-29-2005, 03:09 PM Yes, the cast is signed for three movies. Production of sequels will depend on how well the first film does, and Joss Whedon's force of will, not Heiki's assumptions.
Nighteagle2001 09-29-2005, 03:38 PM I'm with Styrofoam Guy, I'd LOVE to see a Shepard Book story.
Griffworks 09-29-2005, 09:49 PM Gonna see it tomorrow at 1:30pm! :D
A Taylor 09-30-2005, 11:19 AM I'd love to see Book's story as well, but I doubt that will happen.
Serenity is on track to be number 1 or 2 this weekend - Universal has really stepped up and put the ad $$ behind it, I have to give them credit for that. If the movie fails, it will be hard to blame the studio.

John, I hope you reach an understanding. I also hope you realize the difference of facts and assumptions.
I am hiding the next FACT For the benefit of those who did not see the film or read the script.
Spoiler;
Book(Ron Glass) is killed off. Walsh(Alan Tudyk) is killed off.
Additional movies that include the entire cast would not be sequels.
John, like you, I do wish to see further adventures of FireFly. I hope Joss Whedon is able to make this happen.
Styrofoam_Guy 09-30-2005, 12:52 PM Heiki I have seen the movie twice already
Joss is an amazing writer and a Book story would be great. I can not say much more without spoilers

TAY666 09-30-2005, 02:41 PM I was hoping to see this a number of times to support it, but there are only 2 theaters in my area carrying it right now.
About an hour away in different directions.
Going tonight, but home someone closer gets it next week.
Griffworks 09-30-2005, 06:19 PM Just got back from watching the movie....
Oh my frakkin' gods! http://www.starshipmodeler.net/cgi-bin/phpBB2/images/smiles/shock.gif
I laughed, I sat on the edge of my frakkin' seat and I was on the verge of tears! What a ride Mr. Whedon has taken us thru! I'm still in shock of how this story played out, who did what, who saw it thru to the end - who didn't.... http://www.starshipmodeler.net/cgi-bin/phpBB2/images/smiles/sad.gif
I highly recommend it - whether you've been a fan all along or not. Damn good movie and it does an excellent job of portraying that Big Damn Heroes to the core of their beings! Gonna talk to Wife about takin' her and the kids to see it tomorrow or Sunday. Damn good movie!
John P 09-30-2005, 06:56 PM Was gonna see it today, but my cold decided to hit me full force over night and keep me awake. I'm wasted today. The wife and I will go Sunday. Can't wait!
Styrofoam_Guy 10-01-2005, 02:01 AM Only Joss can make you laugh and cry, be happy and sad at the same time. Or sad one second and then busting a gut laughing the next.
Quite the roller coaster ride

spe130 10-01-2005, 03:21 AM I agree. Funny, touching, shocking...all within the span of seconds. Great stuff.
veedubb67 10-01-2005, 05:22 PM Just finished watching Serentiy at our local movieplex. I was pleasantly surprised at the number of folks watching the 10:55 matinee. The movie was very enjoyable, one of the better ones put out this year. They explain everything quite well, so a Serenity "virgin" won't be confused. I especially like the homage to Forbidden Planet (check out the numbers on the research ship). BTW - River kicks some serious butt. All in all, I give it two thumbs up.
