PhilipMarlowe 09-20-2005, 11:16 PM Wondered why it was a repeat last night, that's why. Long overdue IMHO  F91 09-20-2005, 11:23 PM Used to be a huge thread about the Daily show........ El Gato 09-20-2005, 11:29 PM You know, some people claim the Daily Show jumped the shark. I'm thinking it's still going strong. José PhilipMarlowe 09-20-2005, 11:34 PM I am a little surprised it was deleted completely, considering some of the threads that have been left up with insults intact. But I didn't see the last few post, so I'm not sure what happened. But hey, The Daily Show won two emmys, it looks like we're going to get a Serenity model, and Rita barely grazed Naples. To quote Mal Reynolds, "All in all not a bad day" PhilipMarlowe 09-20-2005, 11:39 PM You know, some people claim the Daily Show jumped the shark. I'm thinking it's still going strong. José Seriously? I think they're just hitting their stride. Though to be fair, Stewart has a LOT more material to work with than Kilborn did. The new guy's piece on "bum-vertising" was pretty funny though. Some marketing genius at Halliburton is probably kicking himself right now for not thinking of it first. El Gato 09-20-2005, 11:48 PM Yeah, some people that I've talked to think that they lost something once they switched to an obviously partisan POV. They liked it better when it was just a fake newscast with a variety of news items. I don't agree with this, although do I wish they would just deep sixed the interview portion (maybe have it only for interesting authors or politicians and not have it when it's a vehicle for celebrities to peddle their latest project) and instead use that time to cover other "news". José PhilipMarlowe 09-21-2005, 08:28 AM Yeah, some people that I've talked to think that they lost something once they switched to an obviously partisan POV. I don't agree with this, although do I wish they would just deep sixed the interview portion (maybe have it only for interesting authors or politicians and not have it when it's a vehicle for celebrities to peddle their latest project) and instead use that time to cover other "news". José I don't think it's a matter of a partisan pov, no more than than I consider my views particularly partisan. But when you have a Republican majority in the White House, House, Senate, and Supreme Court, it should be no real surprise the focus is going to be on the Republicans. I could do without the project-promoting interviews as well. One thing I do miss is John "Joe Bob Briggs" Bloom's old segment, "God Stuff", that Jonathan Bell was a real hoot. lonfan 09-21-2005, 08:50 AM Not For Nuthin' but have ya' happened to notice how much the new Strechable "Mr. Fantastic" Action Figure (Based on the FF Movie) looks Excatly like Jon Stewart! lol Next time you're at Wal-Mart take a look. John/Lonfan iamweasel 09-21-2005, 08:55 AM Not For Nuthin' but have ya' happened to notice how much the new Strechable "Mr. Fantastic" Action Figure (Based on the FF Movie) looks Excatly like Jon Stewart! lol Next time you're at Wal-Mart take a look. John/Lonfan We noticed that when they first came out. It is unbelievable how much it looks like Stewart. Perhaps he should get royalties. Zorro 09-21-2005, 09:35 AM This just in: Fahrenheit 9/II: The Director's Cut is being released next Tuesday. It includes over an hour of new, updated material about Iraq's WMDs, the pre-invasion connection between Saddam and bin Laden, Iraq's ability and desire to launch an attack on America within 45 minutes, the aluminum tubes from Niger, etc. It also includes a very funny commentery track by some Canadian guy who comes in every 15 minutes - calls all the viewers whiney loser sissyboys - then leaves. 15 minutes later, he comes in and says the same thing all over again. It's great comic relief over subject matter that is immensely more depressing than it was just over a year ago. And ya just gotta have some comic relief. iamweasel 09-21-2005, 10:15 AM This just in: Fahrenheit 9/II: The Director's Cut is being released next Tuesday. Oh ,great, now all the neo-con supporters will tell us all over again how fat Moore is. Can't actually defend the Administration but calling him fat should do just as well. Zorro 09-21-2005, 10:34 AM Oh ,great, now all the neo-con supporters will tell us all over again how fat Moore is. Can't actually defend the Administration but calling him fat should do just as well. Well, he's still fat - so at least they got something right. El Gato 09-21-2005, 10:50 AM Don't forget Moore's an America-hater. He hates America. Oh, and F9/11 should be banned because it demoralizes our troops. Back to Jon Stewart: Why can't he get good projects outside of the Daily Show? Doesn't his agent take a look at the material and tell him, "This stuff sucks"? Of the stuff they used to do that I miss were the MS-TDDfn with Nancy "Money Bunny" Walls and Steve Carrell and Stephen Colbert's "Even Stephen". Speaking of the latter, I'm already missing "This Week In God". José PhilipMarlowe 09-21-2005, 12:34 PM This just in: Fahrenheit 9/II: The Director's Cut is being released next Tuesday. Don't forget the elitist luddites  spe130 09-21-2005, 01:00 PM Don't forget the elitist luddites  Where did I leave my sabot? Eric K 09-21-2005, 02:36 PM I really don't know if I would call what Jon stewart has to say partisan. He does have a viewpoint and does editorialize, but I've seen him swing at both parties and calls stupidity when he sees it no matter who's on the receiving end. I too miss "This week in God"...sigh...wonder if it'll make the transfer to the Colbert Report. Zorro 09-21-2005, 02:36 PM Where did I leave my sabot? ... eh, I don't think we want to get back into a debate about sabot control. iamweasel 09-21-2005, 03:08 PM I know the government is trying to take away my AK-sabot-47's. Me no happy!! I mean the shoe sabot BTW. PhilipMarlowe 09-21-2005, 03:30 PM Back to Jon Stewart: Why can't he get good projects outside of the Daily Show? Doesn't his agent take a look at the material and tell him, "This stuff sucks"? José The oddity in his career, one probably only those of us with kids are familiar with, is his starring role in Elmopalooza. I have no idea why his agent and the Sesame Street folks thought that was a good match. Maybe they loved his work in Half Baked? Ditto for James Gandolfini and Edie Falco, both who have hosted Sesame Street. Though fortunately not as Tony and Carmela Soprano. The-Nightsky 09-21-2005, 04:14 PM Lets not forget Robert Deniro.....he did a wonderful cabbage. El Gato 09-21-2005, 04:43 PM I really don't know if I would call what Jon stewart has to say partisan. He does have a viewpoint and does editorialize, but I've seen him swing at both parties and calls stupidity when he sees it no matter who's on the receiving end. Yeah, but there are ideologues who earnestly believe that if someone doesn't buy their POV lock, stock and barrel, then that person is "the enemy". It doesn't matter if that person dishes it out to both sides with equal relish. It's the current version of "If you're not with us, you're against us". It's sad in a lot of respects. Whatever happened to Vance DeGeneres, anyway? We know Mo Rocca went on to being a commentator for VH1... José Zorro 09-21-2005, 04:57 PM Whatever happened to Vance DeGeneres, anyway? We know Mo Rocca went on to being a commentator for VH1... José My brother's wife is one of Mo Rocca's best friends going back to college days - for whatever that's worth. They recently spent a weekend in upstate New York with Mo and his "partner". El Gato 09-21-2005, 06:01 PM Then you may know: Was Rocca's split with TDD a nasty one? Shortly after he left, there seemed to be some pointed jokes that appeared to me to be jabs directed at Mo Rocca. For instance, near the end of Rocca's tenure, he stopped going out to do stories or be involved in any other way except for the "Mark your calendars" segment. When it was clear he wasn't involved anymore, Ed Helms did a "Mark your calendars" where at the end of the segment he "b!tched" that this was all that he was good for and that he didn't get any more good material. On another show, they made fun of a VH1 special with Helms doing a Rocca-like commentary. Just wondering. José Zorro 09-21-2005, 06:32 PM Then you may know: Was Rocca's split with TDD a nasty one? He says Mo is a very nice guy but of course he's only been around him in relaxed social situations. My brother got married exactly a year ago and Mo was supposed to be in the wedding but his father became deathly ill and he didn't make it. His departure from the show doesn't seem to have hurt him though. He's certainly a clever, funny guy and he's making a damned good living as a writer. He did a speaking engagement at UNC-Chapel Hill last spring and my sister-in-law said he got $20,000 for that one 90 minute appearance. He was also in the horrible "Bewitched" re-make - briefly - along with Amy Sedaris - a former HS classmate of mine whose younger brother David is an even cleverer, funnier, richer gay writer. It's like "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" or something - except I don't believe Kevin Bacon is funny or a writer or gay - although he did play a funny gay hustler in "JFK". :p El Gato 09-21-2005, 07:49 PM Reading posts like that, especially the part about being rich, make me wonder if I chose the wrong path in life... er, in terms of career, I mean. I rather like the team I play for and wouldn't want to switch  José PerfesserCoffee 09-21-2005, 08:10 PM I would make another post here but I always feel like Ralph or Piggy from "Lord of the Flies" around you fellows. :p Oh, wait! What happened? This is a different thread! Zorro 09-21-2005, 08:17 PM Oh no!! I just looked at the banner at the bottom of the thread. It says "Free Zorro, The Gay Blade" I'm not! Really! I mean, not that there's anything wrong with it ... PhilipMarlowe 09-21-2005, 08:37 PM As Jerry told Elaine on Seinfeld, we have a very good team:) El Gato 09-21-2005, 10:58 PM Oh no!! I just looked at the banner at the bottom of the thread. It says "Free Zorro, The Gay Blade" images/smilies/yikes.gif I'm not! Really! I mean, not that there's anything wrong with it ... Of course not, as long as you're walking and running and jumping and playing... José PhilipMarlowe 09-21-2005, 11:41 PM Excellent show tonight, the "relatively closer look" at White House press secretarys and the press pool (otherwise known as "America's 3-Year Olds") was particularly hilarious. No wonder they only last two years, on average. Even the other side might enjoy it, as Clinton's secretarys are shown as well. And the guest is Ricky Gervais from The Office. El Gato 09-27-2005, 12:28 AM "Not now Jon, I'm siphonig flood waters back into the Gulf." Classic! José PhilipMarlowe 09-27-2005, 10:22 AM "Not now Jon, I'm siphonig flood waters back into the Gulf." Classic! José I agree the "All Hurricane" show had a few classic lines, my fave: "Federal response to Hurricane Rita seemed relatively smooth in contrast to Hurricane Katrina, which was littered with faux pas. Or as the President prefer's to refer to them as, "Freedom Pas's." Amazing how prescient they were about the whole "reporters doing rescues" article, I'll bet Geraldo and Anderson Cooper are firing guys as we speak for not finding them a hurricane-victim dolphin to rescue! Geraldo was so moved rescuing that woman in a wheelchair, he almost let go of the microphone and lifted with both hands. I'm sure Jon will have plenty to comment about Michael Brown tonight, who had a pretty busy day in the press: http://www.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/09/27/katrina.brown/ http://rawstory.com/news/2005/CBS_News_says_Michael_Brown_rehired_as_FEMA_consul t_0926.html The CNN story finally answers the question about Brown's annual salary:$145.000. Zorro 09-28-2005, 01:59 PM Should be a good show tonight. http://www.cnn.com/2005/LAW/09/28/delay.investigation.ap/index.html PhilipMarlowe 09-28-2005, 02:39 PM Only two indicted so far this week? :hat: I was sort of surprised Stewart didn't comment on Brown's remarks or the fact he''ll draw four more weeks of salary to "ease his transition", I'm guessing they're putting together something "special" for later in the week. 'Course the Delay story shows how hard it is to work in Washington, it's no wonder they have to pay a guy with no experience $145K and give him four more weeks of salary after he quits in the middle of the job. iamweasel 09-28-2005, 03:23 PM The Delay news makes me want to dance with joy. Couldn't have happened to a bigger, I mean nicer, sleeze ball. Zorro 09-28-2005, 03:42 PM Anybody seen this week's National Enquirer? El Gato 09-28-2005, 04:32 PM I was sort of surprised Stewart didn't comment on Brown's remarks or the fact he''ll draw four more weeks of salary to "ease his transition", I'm guessing they're putting together something "special" for later in the week Can you say "Presidential Medal of Freedom"? It's nice to know that the next time my boss says I'm doing a "heck of a job" I can tell her that $145K is the going rate for that job category :hat: José PhilipMarlowe 09-28-2005, 04:47 PM Anybody seen this week's National Enquirer? I haven't seen it yet, but Bill Maher reported on it and commented he believed it because somebody does appear to be drinking again because of his behavior. "He has all the classic signs of a guy with a drinking problem: showing up late, running up a huge tab he knows he can't pay, and picking a fight with the wrong guy!" gruffydd 09-28-2005, 05:49 PM One hand on the throttle - the other on the bottle. The ultimate drunk "driver"! Full of remorse over the deaths of American soldiers? That sounds like classic alcoholic self-pity to me: "OH honey, I'm so sorry I hit you and the kids - (gimme another drink for the remorse)......" and then at the bar: "my wife doesn't understand me Joe, gimme another drink" This is a very alarming situation. And I knew it would happen. Saw it coming ever since (S)Election #1. Heaven help us. Maybe the whole country should go to Al-anon (in a bomb shelter). Zorro 09-28-2005, 06:04 PM Regardless of the "truth" of this story (it's helpful to note that The National Enquirer has a solid track record in defending itself successfully against libel suits and in "scooping" the mainstream media on many of these types of stories) - the mere fact that the story was published - with a front page header - in a mass circulation periodical sold in nearly every news stand, grocery chain and convenience store in America is just one more indication of a sea change in the public's attitude toward President Bush and his Neo-Con administration. Never would have happened a year ago. El Gato 09-28-2005, 06:19 PM ^ Is the Enquirer owned by Murdoch? Maybe I'm thinking of the wrong tabloid (insert obvious joke about Fox News here). In totally (un?)related news, our counsel just told me, "I suppose I shouldn't be such a Luddite over these things"!! He was referring to me scanning his signature so that it appears on electronic versions of our documents. José PhilipMarlowe 09-28-2005, 07:29 PM Regardless of the "truth" of this story (it's helpful to note that The National Enquirer has a solid track record in defending itself successfully against libel suits and in "scooping" the mainstream media on many of these types of stories) - the mere fact that the story was published - with a front page header - in a mass circulation periodical sold in nearly every news stand, grocery chain and convenience store in America is just one more indication of a sea change in the public's attitude toward President Bush and his Neo-Con administration. Never would have happened a year ago. Worthy to note the story is credited to "Whitehouse insiders" by (as Zorro points out) the libel-savvy NE. Hmmm, I wonder what's going to happen to the guy who leaked that? And for icing on the cake, I'm listening to Tom Delay on Hardball blaming his indictment on, you guessed it, the Democrats and the liberal media! I'm sorta stunned he brags he's been before the house ethics committee 8 times since 1993 though! Zorro 09-28-2005, 07:50 PM Worthy to note the story is credited to "Whitehouse insiders" by (as Zorro points out) the libel-savvy NE. Hmmm, I wonder what's going to happen to the guy who leaked that? I'm sorta stunned he brags he's been before the house ethics committee 8 times since 1993 though! And Congressman Shays, asked by Matthews to assess Delay's character, had this to say: "Well, if I ever find a knife in me, it'll be in my belly instead of my back." PhilipMarlowe 09-29-2005, 02:29 PM Well, they finally got to the Brown hearing, and Senior Post-Disaster Investigative Analylist Rob Corddry gave the best post-analysis of Brown's testimony to date I've seen in the media: "Did you find anything admirable about Brown's Testimony?" "I was impressed with by his willingness to accept responsibility for how incompetant everyone else was. He candidly admitted he was too trusting... too able... too overskilled, to deal with all the retards around him. Over all Jon, a heart-felt and stirring mea culpa" El Gato 09-29-2005, 03:08 PM So.... how long do you think it'll be before they close this thread? What ticks me off is that they just don't close it. It's deleted completely. PhilipMarlowe 09-29-2005, 03:39 PM So.... how long do you think it'll be before they close this thread? What ticks me off is that they just don't close it. It's deleted completely. Well, maybe I'm just a naive & trusting soul, but I suspect that particular thread may have been deleted because multiple post by somebody probably would be interpreted as insulting to some of our Southern modelers who went thru a tough time and face more hardship ahead. And with quotes aplenty it was probably easier to just kill the whole thing. 'Least that's what I prefer to think. PerfesserCoffee 09-29-2005, 06:21 PM What ticks me off is that they just don't close it. It's deleted completely. What a loss! :p El Gato 09-29-2005, 06:27 PM Those posts notwithstanding, I wonder whether political discussion, especially ones that advocate POVs from a certain side of the spectrum, are not tolerated around here. I only say this because, with all due respect to the HobbyTalk rules, some discussions tend last longer than others. But hey, I could be wrong. I've made mistakes in the past. I can't recall any of them, but I'm sure I've done my share... José gruffydd 09-29-2005, 06:57 PM I believe the continued openness of this thread exists in a parallel universe with the new-found openness of the Bush Administration (as in blasted wide open). PhilipMarlowe 09-30-2005, 12:24 PM You guys gotta start watching Fox News, the indignant Tom Delay segment on Hannity & Colmes was as hilarious as anything ever dreamed up by the Daily Show or SNL!(Even if they did apparently send Colmes to his room, no great loss, as Colmes is the least compelling advocate of the left since Zell Miller). This guys arrogance is truly astounding, he makes Michael Brown look apologetic and introspective. The moner laundering was "just like your brother-in-law lending you rent money" (Never mind that most guys making $164K a year don't need help with their rent, especially $190,000 worth) and that it was all the liberal media and "blatant political partisanship, a rogue district attorney in Travis County, Texas, named Ronnie Earle ". (Never mind that Earle is so partisan he's prosecuted more Democrats than Republicans, and is so "unethical" he once filed charges on himself for missing a deadline requirement) Delay's outraged by this "blindsiding attack" that's just so unprecedented! (Never mind this quote from the Washington Post:"And even back in June before he was indicted, DeLay had already raised well over a million dollars in contributions for his legal defense fund, including from fellow congressmen.") I'm just worried that The Daily Show is going to be able to keep up! vBulletin® v3.8.7, Copyright ©2000-2012, vBulletin Solutions, Inc.
