Hey does anyone remember the Dr. Phibes movies ?
You know Vincent Price played a character bent on revenge.
They made two movies about him.
Since Halloween is coming up I would like to get these two "classics".
Anyone know if I could get them at a store without ordering via internet?

I got Basket Case together with Return of Swamp Thing for 10 bucks at Best Buy. Not seen Swampie yet, but since Basket Case is closer to 20 on its own (same release) this was a good buy. If you're into horror, or just a good gorefest with cheesey effects, it's worth getting.

I've heard of "Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine" (and its sequel "Dr. Goldfoot and the Girl Bombs"). Though I'd probably feel pretty good surrounded by gorgeous babes in bikinis. . .

My recollections of Vincent Price's movies is that he played some kind of "judge" going around and trying women for witchcraft. Can't remember their titles though.

I think you mean The Conqueror Worm, one of Price's more memorable movies.

One of my favorite Vincent Price films, loosely based on the true story of notorious 17th-century witch hunter Matthew Hopkins. Released as The Witchfinder General in the UK; the odd American title is taken from an obscure Edgar Allen Poe poem (a reference to human mortality). Perhaps people thought it was a cheesy monster flick about this giant worm, see. . .

I met Vincent Price in 1972, just after he made The Abominable Dr. Phibes.
I was 12 years old, and he was touring the High Schools and lecturing about art,
and my Dad took me to see him.
He did a question and answer period after his speech, so I rasied my hand and Vinnie pointed at me and I stood and said...
"Mr. Price, what will be your next movie...?"
He replied, "I'm doing a sequel to The Abominable Dr. Phibes called Dr. Phibes Rises Again...and....he...will...rise...again...!!!!"
Needless to say, the countdown had begun for that 12 year old.

Back in '69 or '70 when I was 11 or 12 Vincent Price was in our town(Davenport, Iowa) for some kind of art related event at the art gallery. It was a saturday in the summer. Wearing a t-shirt, cut-off shorts and tennis shoes I rode my bike to the art gallery to see what was what. I'd never been in the place before. I walk in and the place seemed deserted. This guy in a tuxedo came from somewhere to see what this grungy kid wanted. I was really scared, felt like being caught in the hallway by a teacher during class or the feeling of walking in bar and everybody wants to know what this kid is doing here. I was sure I was gonna get in trouble. I told the guy I came to see Vincent Price. He said something about Mr. Price being busy and I should go on home.

price called the phibes films "absolutly mad films made by an absolutly mad director". needless to say, he loved them, and there was talk of a third film right up until the end of his life. the art direction in the 2 movies is just splendid.

by the way, one of my brothers email addresses is "phibes2", and phibes was one of the 3 characters i sculpted in my first professional mask making commission.

The Phibes movies are two of my favorite Vincent Price films. If you like Mr. Price as Dr. Phibes, you might also look into Theatre of Blood. VP plays a mad shakespearian actor killing offf the critics who ruined his career. The murders are base on various Shakespeare plays. His daughter is played by the very beatiful Diana Rigg.

I just recorded (well about a month ago) a Great film called "Diary Of A Madman" in this one Price has got some kind of "Being" leading him to KILL! Believe it or not I've yet to make it through to the End lol NOT because it's Boring (No it's great!) But I always put it on too late at night and Mr. Price's Voice is just so soothing Out we go lol I'm gonna have to finish this movie...But yeah I just rented Both Phibes films they are great and the best part is I've discovered SOME Films can be Recorded from DVD on to a VHS Tape (The Phibes Films and anything else by MGM) I found this out by accident I fell asleep while watching a DVD Meanwhile I'd set the VCR to go off at a certin time to catch a Documentray on TCM Anyhoo when I awoke all I had recorded was the one of the "Species" Movies. So I tried other films I already have Universals,Paramounts, So far ALL MGM's work and strangely enough Halle Berry's Catwoman was recordable But WB's Superman has a Block (Maybe cause Catwoman wasn't worth Blocking? lol) BUT anything from MGM works or real Grade Z DVD companies I don't understand it but I'm not complaining. Only thing is if you want the Commentaries you gotta record the film twice but again I good way to have back ups of your collection.

You must have a VCR that defeats Macrovision. MGM is the only major studio that only puts Macrovision protection on their dvds. Universal, Columbia, Disney, Paramount, Fox, WB, New Line all put Macrovision plus CSS protection on theirs. Sony developed a new protection called ACRSS(or something like that) that involves actually putting lines of data errors within the movie. They developed it for use with the hi def DVD. So far they only put it on Columbia straight from the theater titles. Tape isn't the best for backup. The original disc will still be good long after the tape turns to goo.

And it should be noted that Species and the Phibes films are all anamorphic widescreen.

The VHS will look the same as the DVD when viewed on a 4x3 TV screen.

But when you get that 16x9 TV set, you will discover that the VHS picture is nowhere near the quality of the DVD. And you'll lose the 5.1 and DTS sound tracks on a movie like Species. (I've got all the Phibes and Species flicks).

Though, you are OK to use it for back-up...but it's not a true copy.

Well To be honest rw, my "DVD/CD burner just Died (it was installed in our hard drive) But again I just seems weird to me that a Recent film like WB's Catwoman (Halle Berry) Recorded fine,Where Superman (Reeve) has that Block that causes the Picture to go Dark then Light again too annoying to record. I gotta admitt though, this discovery has allowed me to put together a nice collection of Horror Films through "Anchor Bay" DVD's I've also done this Tape to Tape All Paramounts VHS stuff works Most of WB's but No Universal. this has allowed me to get a nice collection of Hammer Films together (my Hollywood Video has TONS of older Horror on VHS) I guess the Major Studios don't really care what we do with the VHS Tapes cause they figure Video Tapes are about to go the way of See-Through Plastic Pants. So I notice most tapes aren't Blocked. Of course I know this is a little unethical and the picture Quailty isn't as good but as I figure they're good enough for me till I can Afford to get the Discs or They are put on DVD

JOHN/LONFAN
Looking forward to "The Incredible Melting Man" Coming To DVD! lol

It is strange that you were able to copy the Catwoman dvd. The light to dark strobe is Macrovision. If you're getting the strobe than you're not completely getting past it. It's possible that VCRs can get past the CSS protection. It's primarily to prevent digital copying. Standalone DVD recorders won't even go into record mode if they detect any kind of protection, even from tapes, without some type of "enhancer". Just like with VCRs you lose any 16x9 enhancement, audio above 2.0 dolby surround, original menu and secondary audio tracks with a standalone dvd recorder. Although you can record 16x9 onto RAM discs. If all you care about is the movie than a standalone dvd recorder is fine for full screen and 4x3 letterbox stuff IF you manage to defeat the copy protection.
I only use mine for more obscure movies from TCM and other movie channels. Their greatest value is in getting TV shows from commercial free channels like Encore(Green Hornet, Time Tunnel, Night Gallery, Thriller, etc.). I also used it to record Batman onto the hard drive, edit the commercials, and then burn to disc since this will probably never get released.
I don't think it's possible to make a true copy of a dvd since manufactured ones are pressed and dvdrs are burned. Don't know if burned is inferior to pressed but they look the same.
With the right computer software you can make complete backups of DVDS but once again you have to deal with circumventing the copy protection. This is illegal so there are no programs for sale which will do this. Ironically, since it's illegal to sell such programs they are available for free. Sometimes I think studios are their own worst enemy. Sony will spend the money to develop new copy protections and then turn around and make dual layer DVD-9 burners a standard drive in most of their computers.

I did notice that on DVD's my friends made for me from somekind of "Burning device" I was often able to watch the film just fine ,but sometimes the Special Features don't make on to this guys DVD Copies. That is interesting what you wrote about the Aspect Ratio changing when you copy the DVD on to another Format (such as VHS) I hadn't noticed. "Learn Sumptin New......" lol

youre freind is intentionally dumping the special features to preserve the image quality. if the video has a lot of special features, and they are included on the copy, the quality will drop to as low as 45%.
