View Full Version : Wisconsin Oval Thread
jashack79 09-07-2005, 07:21 PM Hey guys I thought we could get a thread going to not only keep oval racing alive but to help it grow where we are currently racing. We can promote racing in and around the state and keep everyone in the loop as to what is going on. So post often and willingly.
I also want to invite everyone to the 1st annual Den Raceway Go Kart Challenge at Sugar River Raceway on Tuesday night Sept. 20 in Broadhead, WI. Sign up is at 6 and racing at 7. These are real racing go karts with 9 hp Honda engines, with no restrictions or governors. The cost is $60 for racing and all saftey gear provided. For more info you can check out www.sugarriverraceway.com for go karting and rentals.
Thanks Jason Hack

jashack79 09-08-2005, 06:15 PM Hey guys it is good to be back racing oval, I think taking last winter and doing some different things helped put the drive for oval back in me, and Pauls persistence. I am looking foreward to this winter and hoping for some good things.
Sorry Neil cant make it the 16 and 17th have to work and cant get out of it. I hope we can get a lot of things going this year there might even be a possibility of a Madison track.

How about some of my "real racer" friends? (he he he)
We'll show you BOYS how it's done.................
jashack79 09-08-2005, 11:45 PM Anyone is welcome to run the karts on the 20th , please rsvp with Paul schwanbeck 608 516 7838 ASAP
Hurricane Racer 09-09-2005, 09:19 AM A Madison track would really be nice! There are enough people in Madison and with the expertise your Paul and yourself, there is enough drive to run one!
If it gets rolling, Ill be there! If you need help with it, let me know as well!
Wish I could make the 20th, but will be in MS again.
Good luck and have fun!

Last time I was living in Madison, Marcca had their track on the North side of town.. Oval was running Tues. nights as I remember..??
burbs 09-12-2005, 12:08 AM so what is going to be the rules for batteries this winter.. I know 3300's are become less the norm, and the gp 3700; and new ib 3800 seem to be selling well.. Cells to not get roar aproved until jan 1st.. so will there be an open battery rule until the cells are all aproved?? i sure hope so, there is 3 or so out there now.. I will be running gp 3700's because that is what hyperform sells..
wiscentral52 09-12-2005, 02:46 PM Leave The Hyperforms At Home. Buy Hefty Cells.
burbs 09-12-2005, 04:46 PM I ran for corey for a long time.. now i run for hyperform... so that what i run .. corey has good stuff i know that... but i get my motors and such from hyperform to so i run all there stuff..
wiscentral52 09-12-2005, 05:17 PM Burbs, I'm just giving you a hard time. You run what ever you want. I personally think that Hefty cells hold a better charge then most.
jashack79 09-12-2005, 06:32 PM Whats up burbs. I guess it is up to dave J for what we run for batts, my vote would be to wait until roar allows 3800's just to have a standard rule for those cells. Just my opinion.
Jason
haysreeling 09-12-2005, 06:40 PM From what I'm gathering pretty much everywhere is going to allow the new cells, sounds like tracks in Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Iowa all will be running the new cells. With not many matchers doing 3300's anymore they will be hard to get.

wiscentral52 09-12-2005, 07:17 PM Does anyone know what we are doing at Triclone as far as a battery rule?
pcdawg 09-15-2005, 11:35 AM Guys. ALso getting back into RC oval....as a promotor. been racing karts with my son past few years. Still karting but getting the itch to run some winter oval races. I figure this is a good spot to test the waters.
Looking to contact Wisconsin area track owners about R/C Latemodel racing. Basically all same equipment rules of 10th scale Stcok and 19T just a twist to the format. Races start with single file rolling start. Then it is 100-150 (depending on track size) green flag laps rather than time. Great fun. Would run under title XSTOC (Xtreme Short Track Oval Challenge) Series.
I welcome feedback from racers and track owners.

pmsimkins 09-15-2005, 01:47 PM PCDAWG,
You have an interesting idea so I'll expand on it a little.
How about running a whole race program more like real short track racing. First you run individual car qualifiers of 3 laps. This determines where you sit in qualifying races. You then make the Feature (A-Main) by finishing well in your qualifying races. The qualifying races are not on your own clock they would be heads up just like mains. You could have tier system of several different qualifying races (rounds) to give everyone a fair shot at making the feature if you run into trouble in one of your races. Your combination of finishes in your qualifying races would determine your grid spot for the feature as well. The feature could then be a laps race instead of time. The number of laps would of course have to tailored to the class and track size. Of course there would be a semi-feature (B-Main) and consolation races (C-Main on down) for those that did not make the feature. Maybe a bump up from the semi-feature (B-Main) to the feature.
I have suggested the idea of a rolling start before and it did not seem like it was too popular of an idea. There are some decent reasons why it would be tough to do, especially for inexperienced guys. You might want to drop that portion of it.

That has been run before infact pcdawg has the guy that ran it. The series was called STORM and we ran laps. 50 laps for the heats and anywere from 100 to 200 lap mains
based on track size, with cautions for wrecks and pit stops to change batteries. That series died because ....................ask pcdawg.
pmsimkins 09-16-2005, 01:02 PM Yeah I have heard about the Storm format. I was just expanding on the idea for the heck of it. Don't really care too much. I think the way I was discussing heats was different then how I remembered I heard Storm ran, but maybe not. The caution flags and battery changes are silly in my opinion.
jashack79 09-16-2005, 06:45 PM I am looking at presenting a friday night oval program to marcca in madison, I am looking to see how many people would run on friday nights.
Jason
burbs 09-16-2005, 06:48 PM if there wont be any of the usual marrca B.S. id prolly be able to make a few on my off fridays.. But if you read the onroad section on rc tech, there isnt any happy racers there...not trying to be a jerk another place to race would be great.. but it needs to be a nice place to race..
Bob Wright 09-16-2005, 06:58 PM Any week nite is definitely out for me.
pmsimkins 09-16-2005, 07:56 PM I'd probably show from time to time. Even if only to practice for elsewhere. MARCCA was a heck of a nice club for oval racing years ago, but things change. That's the nature of a club. Democracy is not always best.
Mike, did you ever race in Madison back when we were on John Nolen Dr. or the North side? I can't remember it all runs together.
burbs 09-17-2005, 05:13 PM i think i raced at every madison track they had, until the last year when everything went nuts with the club..
Hurricane Racer 09-18-2005, 09:23 AM Count me in for Fridays or even Sundays.
NH
hefty12 09-18-2005, 11:44 AM I would be able to do Fridays. Maybe not every Friday, but quite a few.
jashack79 09-18-2005, 08:49 PM Thanks for the feedback, I talked with a board member and explained the situation with no oval at trackside and that it would be a good oppurtunity for marcca and oval racers. He said it would be up to the boards decision as to what programs will be run and when. He was very much in favor of a friday night oval program so lets see what happens.
Just a reminder that the "Den Go Karting Challenge" is this Tuesday night Sept 20 at 6:00 pm in Broadhead, all are invited for a fun night of racing real go karts.
pcdawg 09-19-2005, 01:47 PM Good to see the tinman online.
We went from town to town setting up STORM events. Good track surfaces and venues became harder and harder to find. Bad tracks, poor racing bad car counts... less motivation to tow, setup and tear down a track - race after race. ...you know the drill. It also ended mostly because my old back isn't what it used to be 20 years ago. I would be in pain for days after a show. Finally my son started racing sprint karts at Dousman. That IS our summer racing focus. R/C racing would be our winter focus.
I moved to Wisconsin not too long ago. I am amazed at how many good tracks are in the area. Good tracks, good car counts GREAT drivers. That can give an old Dawg new energy. I'm not looking to start up a track just organize and run some races at existing venues from December - March.
We have always had success by running a series that is created for the racers by the racers. The main format would be 1/10th scale oval stockcars running lap mains and heats on one set of batteries. After that I'm open to surrounding the format with what the racers want. Equipment rules, race format etc can be a collective decision.
Single file starts are pretty cool...and easier on newbies than you would think. If racers would vote on no rolling starts or yes to rolling starts, so be it. Heat lengths bump-ups like World of Outlaws whatever. We would have a meeting for interested racers and set the full format from there.
The key is to make the equipment rules as fare and universal as RC racing can be, make the format exciting and make the raceday fun. I believe I can bring the fun to the table. The racers will have to decide on the car rules to keep it fare and solid participation will make the XSTOC (Xtreme Short Track Oval Challenge) Series exciting.
