I have heard a few conversations lately relating to the gas prices and shortages. Some of these people are complaining about the amount of gas used by NASCAR for races, testing, practice ect.

My question is, do you think this could become a widespread opinion with people calling for a suspension of races/testing until we are through this crisis? Would you support it. Me personally I think we need our entertainment in bad times, it helps relieve stress. Even if the NASCAR teams didn't use gas, I still couldn't afford it so I say let em race!

Well, i dont think there is a problem. NASCAR drivers need gas for work just like many people need gas to get to work. If they can afford to buy it and use it then they should be. These same people complaining probably drive gas guzzling vehicles. If there was a major shortage then maybe some races suspended but there isnt a major shortage(as of now it is a very minor shortage due to the hurricane). The reason why gas prices are so high is due to overnight trading, price speculation by corrupt analysists, impact in the gulf from the storm and the media.

I agree, my job requires me to drive. (I'm a sales rep) Only difference between me and them is I can't afford it :)

I know exactly what you mean. I live off campus of my college and i have to commute everyday. I seriously had to pick up a second job at a bowling alley just to pay for gas. Sadly, it's not helping much since the cost of food is sky rocketing as well.

Know what you mean, I have two regular jobs and then I do floors for my former workplace when they need doing. I had just gotten to the point where I thought I could give the floors up and enjoy my weekends. Oh well 3 jobs and can't afford gas, what's wrong with that picture???

I have never posted on this thread but this subject matter has compelled me to speak up. I am not a huge NASCAR fan at all. However the problem that i see arrising from stock car racing is not the drivers/teams using gas, but all of the fans driving to the various races around the country using un-godly amounts of gas to get to the tracks themselves. I do not mean to offend anyone here but this is just my opinion. Cheers, Happy Hunting and Stay out of jail!

Don't exactly think its politically correct to tell people how to use gas they purchased with their earned money. I have been to 5 races the past 2 races and every car going to the event was packed. And if this is a concern to you, you should note the ammount of gas used by people attending MLB and NFL events(just to name a few major sports).

Fair enough. I see your point.

I have to agree with Dan there. For one thing, as of now there isn't any rationing going on it's just ungodly prices. Which means he who can afford the gas can do whatever he pleases with it, the rich rule. If rationing comes into effect things may change. Back in the 70's they did shorten races during the gas crisis. I think though this was done more for the image of it then anything else. As has been pointed out the gas usage during a race is nothing compared to the gas used to get all the cars, crews, officials ect to the tracks.

I have to admit it bugs me to see someone gassing up thier RV for a weekend trip when I can't afford to fill my tank 3 times this week so I can work. But for now, they can afford it and I can't so they get thier trip and I get to look for another job.

Maybe All The Events Should Offer Mass Transit Operations, Take City Buses Around On Different Routes And Pick People Up, Or Offer Car Pool Specials Or Price Breaks. The Thing Is As Long As There Are Cars They Will Need The Gas Everybody Is Bitching About. The Other Solution Is Walk.
Thats Not As Fun And Takes Awile.

For those of you who still think there is a gas shortage:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/10/27/AR2005102701042.html

75% increase in profit is a little extreme. The "shortage" is a hoax just to get us to purchase gas that could actually sell for $1.50 per gallon. Seems sort of funny that gas prices took a drop of about 25 cents last week when the profit reports starting coming out.......

Gas is under $2.00/gallon! Spotted in Roanoke VA this past weekend $197.9 Here in Charlottesville VA it's running $2.29 but got 25 miles in any direction and it around $2.09
