View Full Version : interesting thought
razorwyre1 08-27-2005, 07:35 AM i just heard a commentary on npr asking "when is the statute of limitations on spoilers?" its a valid question. of course stuff still in the theatres and just released on video shouldnt be spoiled, but what about the older stuff? to say that everybody's seen it is a big presumption, on the other hand how an you have a meaningful discussion of a certain film without discussing some of the 'surprises". just something to kick around here....
im not sure about where i stand on it. i try to avoid spoiling things for friends, but the other day i was trying to give a friend an idea of the flavor of the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, and found i really couldnt do that without dropping a few classic douglas adams lines (fortunatly the work is so chock full oif them that even if i blew a joke or 2 for them, its still a tiny percentage).
rw2516 08-27-2005, 09:01 AM The only thing I consider spoilers are those that you have to actually see the movie or tv episode for it to be revealed.
Anything in a trailer, preview of next week's show, article or interview is fair game. If you can go to sci-fi.com and read plot synopsis of future episodes I wouldn't consider anything in the synopsis a spoiler. Anything revealed on the cover of a dvd or tape I wouldn't consider a spoiler. No statute of limitations on old stuff. A friend of mine is watching the first season of BSG for the first time on dvd. We talk about it lot and I refrain from telling him anything of what's going on now. He is going to watch Lost for the first time on dvd next. If someone has never seen Witness for the Prosecution wouldn't want to spoil it. Just give a warning at the beginning of a discussion involving suprises

That reminds me of the ol' National Lampoon's "Spoilers" page they used to put out every month in their magazines glory days in the mid-late seventies.
Anybody know for sure, did National Lampoon invent spoilers?

What really gets me is when PLANET OF THE APES first came out on DVD in the box set, the Statue of Liberty shot was on both sides of the box, the front and back of the case for the movie, the front of the insert, and on the DVD itself. And the main menu has the back of the head shot of the statue.

Well think about it.............
DVD's are usually purchased by people who have already seen the movie who would like a copy of it themselves. :)

El Gato 08-27-2005, 07:21 PM The woman who cuts my hair and I were discussing movies last summer. She asked me if I had seen "The Usual Suspects" and I replied that I hadn't. She tells me I have to see it, because it's so good... then she proceeds to tell me important plot points of the movie including the major spoiler about Kevin Spacey. Sheesh, there goes my desire to see the movie...
To this day I haven't let her forget it.

Babaganoosh 08-29-2005, 11:34 AM I say that if you didn't see the first run or the repeat of a certain TV show, you're SOL.
I think that if you don't see a movie after it comes out on DVD within the first month, you shouldn't complain that people are posting spoilers.
