Hello fellow hobbiests,I at one time went under the name of MODELGUY,but I thought a change was in order, call in a makover if ya will ,lol.On to the dvd sets-Although there has been uncertainty on the quality of these dvd sets,I personally have been quite impressed, that is up until the time Season 3 was released.WHAT A DISSAPOINTMENT!Some of the best episodes of the series were on this set in brilliant color! From what I understand all of the prints were taken from the prints of the CH vhs tapes,or the negatives,Season 1 and 2 were'nt bad,but 3 :drunk: FFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUZZZZZYYY,I wonder why this season was not as good in the image department, don't get me wrong, they are watchable, but come on.PLEASE FOX RE RELEASE THIS SEASON,WITH A CLEARER IMAGE! I'd buy one

Maybe I'm not as picky, but it looked good to me. Besides, FOX won't redo it. I read that sales were not as they expected.

Obvioulsy, you're NOT picky.

LOST IN SPACE on DVD started out bad and has gotten progressively worse. Honestly, seeing how bad the early episode transfers were done, I wouldn't have thought the quality could slide any further. These just look bad. There is no other way to describe it.

In the years that I've been complaining about the quality, I continue to make the same to challenge to those who disagree with me: Find another TV on DVD release from a major studio that looks this bad. This isn't purely a matter of opinion. People are entirely free to disagree about subjective judgements. This is a case of a clearly observable lapse in quality.

Lost in Space looks good on DVD? Does it look as good as MR. ED? Does it look as good as THE TWILIGHT ZONE? Does it look as good as GILLIGAN'S ISLAND? Does it look as good as THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW? Does it look as good as THE THUNDERBIRDS?

The observable reality is that LIS is among the worst looking DVD on TV sets that has ever been produced by a major studio (I want to say "THE WORST" period but I haven't seen every show from every studio...it's the worst I've seen).

Some times I am just happy to see it on DVD. THe one that bother me are, the one with dust ,scratches, and hair in the transfers. You know the cheap one, but I still by them, because I like the shows.

The reason it didn't sell well is becasue Fox is to cheap to promote it and the product qualityof all the releases. They won't remaster.

In all honesty, the reason why they won't spend the money to remaster is that there simply isn't the audience to make it financially feasible

And no matter how much work you do on it, or how much you advertise,LIS never has, and never, ever will have the following of TOS, and any repeat or video releases of it will die with the baby boomers, while TOS likely will not. You can probably count the number of LIS fans under 25 on appendages you find handy around the room, AND you also don't have a major network willing to finance said restoration in exchange for broadcast rights.

Fox knew LIS was a niche title that they wanted to get out to make people happy, that they figured would sell well enough to justify its production. Be happy that it wasn't Mary Tyler Moore'd where sales were so bad that it took 3 years to get season 2.

People keep making the mistake that the general public wants to watch complicated sci-fi TV shows that aren't supernatural in nature. Firefly was advertised behind the batter in the World Series! It doesn't matter what you do, Joe Six-Pack will not watch/buy it. But that still means that there's plenty of money to be had, but the audience you're looking at is net and word of mouth based, and no one who's not already a LIS fan is going to be willing to cut through the cheese.

And yet, the BEST looking classic series on DVD is MR.ED.

MR.ED wasn't even a network show. It was syndicated and it's even older than LIS. A Black&White syndicated show about a talking horse. And it looks fantastic. I mean, it's absolutely sparkling gorgeous.

Does MR.ED look perfect because there is a huge audience for a 45 year old show about a talking horse?

There seems to be no shortage of people making excuses for Fox but none of the excuses hold water. When shows like SUPERCAR, NAKED CITY and MR.ED all look MUCH better than LIS, you can't blame poor quality on audience size. Fox cheaped out. Let's hope they license out their next batch of Irwin Allen shows.

Mr Ed has pristine 35mm prints available, prints that have not been through optical printers, or had shots intentionally softened to hide the cheese. Mr. Ed also is a single set release without an SRP in the $70 range to put your foot in the door for the first season, and there's a hell of a lot of difference in cost when you are putting together 21 half hours to almost 30 hours.
Also, you have to remember that a ton of kids watch Mr. Ed just like they watch Gilligans Island. Lost in Space has virtually nothing but nostalgia left, while those 2 shows are still gaining lots of viewers.

Why do you think they went to half season boxes? It was an attempt to get more people out to buy the set.

I'm sorry guys, this is how it works, consider yourself lucky that Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and Time Tunnel appear to be on their way.
