Since the original is public domain there appear to be about 89 different issues out there. Can anyone give me authoritive advice on which one I should buy? The original, that is.

I think the "Millenium Edition" is considered the best transfer and best extras.

Agreed on the Millenium Edition release. It's got a bunch of extra's that are great, to include an audio interview w/Duane Jones - apparently the last interview he ever gave. I picked it up from Amazon.com and highly recommend it.
