View Full Version : While we're at it, did Stargate jump?

With the new season underway, all of the 5 episodes so far has dealt with Vala and cleaing up her intergalactic messes. There's some cryptic relationship between Landry and the new doctor among other goings on.

Just doesn't seem as good as previous seasons and I'm afraid this'll be the last season.

Although...this new Orii threat is compelling. I keep thinking "how are they going to get out of this one?" Might be worth keeping an eye on.

Atlantis, on the other hand is definatley getting better.

I think Landry and the doctor were, or still are married. The whole Vala storyline is to fill time waiting for Amanda Tapping to come back from maternity leave. The deal with her and Jackson being connected by the bracelets is a plot device to keep her around until Carter returns. The bracelet connection will wear off in just in time as Carter returns. I think the Ori are pretty cool bad guys. Can't wait for them to attack Earth. This does feel like a spinoff of the original show and has a last season feel to it.

Yeah, the Orii aren't exactly as easy as the Goa'uld, whom you could just shoot to get rid of and all the slaves would rejoice. These Orii Priors seem to be more like something out of the Dark Ages of Europe, more like Grand Inquisitors. I think that they're using some sort of nanotech to spread their viruses and such. I might be wrong, tho.

As to MajGen Landry and Dr. Lam, I can't help but wonder if she's not his daughter or niece. I mean, he's a bit old to have been scroggin' her....

To be honest, I never did get the big excitment over SG1 in the first place. Sure it has all the solid production and care taken for characters that Trek should have had since DS9, but it's also highly conservative in it's storytelling - nothing really challenging to the genre, format, or audience (maybe in a few individual episodes, but nothing major).

Of course, I've only been watching since Daniel Jackson was replaced with that other guy for a single season (name escapes me). My impression has been that this show had already lost it's fire by then. RDA was phoning it in the last two seasons or more (as enjoyable as his character is), story arcs anemic. It's amiable, occasionally exciting, but nothing to get hooked on.

Lately I've been getting the early seasons on disc from the library. Season one had some good stuff, didn't set the world on fire. Season two comes closest to living up to all the praise...so I'm guessing that's where the good stuff is? Seasons 2 through...? 4, 5? 6?

And is it really necessary for every single damn season to have one of those annoying nostalgia/flashback episodes?

I'm actually thinking the last few shows look like they're getting a little enthusiasm back with the Orii, compared to the last few years. Potentially strong adversary, but the real promise lies in what they can do with the religious conflicts over the larger canvas of one or more seasons. Also, it's great to see Claudia Black finally indulge her huge talent for comedy. She so seldom got the chance on Farscape to really let loose with it, and I think it went largely unappreciated next to her talent for dramatic acting.

Ben Browder, though, has been left nothing to do as yet. Poor way to handle the introduction of the SG team's new leader. Aside from being way toned down, there's no distinction from Crichton.

Oh, and I hate the new shortened main titles sequences for both Stargate shows.

If I was "actually watching the show last night"?!?

I was at work and the show was on, but seeing as I got busy two times for about five minutes each time i'd have to say that I guess I wasn't "actually watching the show last night"... What I did catch wasn't exactly all that impressive, so I didn't bother having my wife set the TiVo to record it. I did find it kind of kewel that Vala was actually feeling something other than greed when people started dying and she realized she couldn't do anything about it.

Agree with both. At this point, the only reason to watch the show is the great chemistry/relationship between Daniel and Vala. They ought to send 'em off their own little adventure and pink-slip the rest of the cast.

FWIW, I think the part of Landry is a huge waste of Beau Bridges. He's much better when he plays flawed average guys.

Like Jonathan Brandis' (Lucas Wolenczak from Seaquest DSV) dad?

Jonathan Brandis died???

Yeah, in 2003. He commited suicide. Holy sugar!

If you'd been in SeaQuest as nothing but Wesley Crusher II, you'd commit suicide too!

As for the main question - I think Stargate has jumped the shark at least three or four times, but it's always come back around. To me, after 8 seasons, it's just like watching a bunch of friends having a good time making some fan films, and that's entertainment enough.

Yes, I too heard the revellation that the general is the doctor's father.

I'm delighted to have Lexa Doig on the show, because she's nice to look at, and I couldn't stand Andromeda. So now I can see her every week! :) But I still miss Teryl Rothery, who was WAY cuter. :(

Fantastic to have Claudia around too. I'll miss her like crazy when her 8 episodes are up.

Shanks is married to Doig? Damn, what a lucky bastich!

Didn't know they'd married, but they've been together a long time. He did one or two guest stints on Andromeda back when they were early in their dating relationship. As a side note, so did Christopher Judge.

Christopher Judge is (or was) seeing the hot nurse from "The Changeling"

I see this season as a new begining.
They have been spending a lot of time introducing all the new characters and giving us a glimps of the new big bad.
I think once Carter is back, the show will hit the ground running.

Last nights ep was the first this season that actually felt like an SG1 episode.
So it seems like things are starting to come together.

John P - what was it you didn't like about Andromeda?
I thought the show was awesome.
Not the first season which was way to mamby-pamby, but after that when it started getting grittier and more real, I thought it was the closest thing to TOS I had ever seen.

The show. :)

I admit I didn't watch it after the first half-dozen episodes. If it improved, great, but I didn't see it.

Sorbo annoys me a bit too.

If you get a chance, catch a couple of season 3 or 4 episodes.
Completely different feel to the whole thing.

As for SG1, what did everyone think of last nights ep?
This one really felt like a good solid SG1 episode. Finally.
It's amazing how much chemistry Carter brings back to the mix.
It also helped that they were actually doing something. Sure, they did the wrong things, but at least they were doing something and not just talking a lot.

My question about last night's is - what about that poor Jaffa pilot in the scout ship Vala knocked out? If he was still in the ship when it was destroyed, she basically murdered him.

I thought the giant stargate was cool. In a way I'm disappointed it wasn't completed. Would have been neat to see the invasion force come through and close the episode on an ominious note. Lou "Jaffa" Gossett is a pretty big jerk. Wonder if open hostilities will open up between Earth and the Jaffa. I think I read somewhere a Jaffa civil war is pending. First I can remember a Roman G'hould. Can't wait for the Ori to attack Earth.

I haven't been too hot on Beau, but I enjoyed watching his Landry last night - he was having a good time with the character I thought. Nice to see Carter back. I thought last night's ep had a sense of urgency missing from the past few episodes, as fun as they might have been. I expect our gang is going to loose quite a few fights with the bad-guys before things turn, but that was a fun win.

I'm not positive, but I think I remember seeing the room light up after she threw him in there. I thought after she threw him in, and was on her way through the door, she ringed him to another ship.

Between that episode and the episode of Atlantis right afterward, there's a heckuva lotta planet that got blown up in the Stargate universe!

No comments on this past episode of SG1?

I thought it was interesting, and really set up the conflict with the new Jaffa hiarchy (sp).

Also really opens up a few more story lines with the Bal clones.
I am curious how they managed to clone both the host and the worm at the same time like that though.
And makes me wonder, if they can do that, then wouldn't it be possible to clone some of the Tokra (sp)

With three major story arcs going(Ori, Jaffa and Bal) looking like this may not be the last season. Maybe they'll go for an even ten. The Ori and Jaffa arcs combine further down the road, that and the upcoming cliffhanger has me hyped. Oh, the building being a bomb and beamed into space was kinda predictable. Saw it coming.

I saw an earlier post saying they had, indeed, already signed for a 10th season.

^I'm glad. Even if the show doesn't rock the world any more and RDA is AWOL, I still find it comfortable, familiar entertainment and a nice way to spend an hour with my wife.

^ Yeah. This series kind of ebbs and flows, but it's always a fun ride. We were watching SG-1 last week when my wife turns to me and says, "Darn you and your Sci-Fi shows that have gotten me hooked!" In fact, she's the one who got me into the 4400. Anyway, back to the subject at hand, sometime within the last couple of seasons I was concerned that SG-1 was going downhill, but as always, it has come back.

^ Yeah. This series kind of ebbs and flows,

That's the perfect description.
You get that "oh no, it's not as good anymore" kind of feeling, then it turns around and blows you away.
I think it is because they spend so much time setting up the story arcs that you have to wait a while for the payoff.

I don't think the show has 'jumped the shark' so much. I'd say it was more of a case of having 'lost Barney'.

Count your blessings Mr. John P. I'm lucky if my wife sits with me for 5 minutes through any show that I like..........................
She even slept through "Star Trek First Contact" when it premered at the movie theaters ! :( The movie wasnt that great but it was certainly not a "sleeper" :)

I count myself even luckier than JP. My SO is interested and involved in both Stargate shows AND is completely addicted to the new BSG. She doesn't dig Firefly much, but she appreciates the costuming. I have to agree with her there, Firefly has outstanding consistency in it's production values and the costumes brilliantly integrate 1860's styles and materials into a future context.

Anyway, having a woman who digs three our of four sci-fi shows all in one night is unprecidented in my life ...a miracle. I'll keep her, I think.

Oh, Mary liked Firefly better than all 3 friday night shows! But we still sit there together (well, seperate chairs) for all 3 hours every week.

When we were first turned on to Stargate by a friend, Mary's the one who insisted we buy the early seasons on DVD to catch up. Yep, I think I'll keep her! (right, like I have a choice now - 26th anniversary coming up next week  )
