What are the best CURRENT Oval Tracks

Break them down by region,

:South-East

:North-East

:Mid-West

or you define the region.

Tell me about these tracks...

for instance if you say " SANDHILLS "- tell me what kind of track, size, a little info about the facilities, on site hobby store..and WHY it's the best track.

(I don't want to hear it's the best..because SOMEBODY Owns it...I want to know WHAT makes the track...the best to race on)

Thanks....I know there are SOOO many awesome tracks, but so many of them I don't know anything about...

For Carpet tracks -- I'm a little banked track biased but I would say:

North Mid West:
Classic Hobbies Raceway
Location: Akron, OH
Tracks: 190' banked ozite tri-oval & a 268' asphalt oval
Some of the fastest racing around. On-site shop, many National/Regional type races held here. So alot of history and Walt Ellis the track owner has been in the hobby for a long time so he knows a thing or two about Oval racing.
Another nice aspect is this track is centrally located between, Indy, Mich, NY, PA so we pull alot of racers from out of town.
Can easily pit 125 racers

South-East
Sandhills Raceway
Location: Vass, NC
235' ?? Banked Carpet Oval
On-site shop
What makes this place unique is not many places invest in a 235' banked track indoor track. The track is huge, so less wrecks and cleaner runs. Super fast racing.
And the place is immaculate inside. I think this is the only track I have been to where the entire building was built to house an R/C track. It's not a converted building.

South
BMS
Location: Blountville, TN
325' Concrete
On-site shop
Walk up to the track and you just go Wow, that is intimidating.
Banking is super steep like 28 degrees in the turns I think I read somewhere.
Shop is super nice. plenty of room for trailers, canopy's.

South/South East

As a couple have stated... BMS. I live close to this track and it is my home track. Comments from vistor are pretty much the same. This is like no other track in the country. 26 degree banking (Iam guessing that the straights are banked 10 degrees or so). 300 + run line. Concrete. It is basically Bristol Motor Speedway On Steroids. Vistors that I have met there come from all over the country to include Canada. We have weekly racers that typically drive 50 to 75 mile one way to run here. The speeds at this track are amazing. Spec runs in the range of 5.6 to 5.9 up front. Mod runs in the range of low 4's. Check Racebms.com. If you are looking to travel and race, you may want to look at the schedule for Sept. ROAR Nats are here. The Flyer is on the site. By the way. The Hobby Shop has closed. (Bummer), But Dale still has parts inside and can get you what you need. The people at this track will go out of there way to help someone new. They are very proud of this track, as I am, and wants everyone that comes to have a postive experience. Hey, even the Nascar boys love this track. Many have ran at this race and raced with us.

Another of my favorites is as stated above. Sandhills. Banked Carpet. Very large facility. Nice! Racing is fast and fun. This is a classy place! The track is elevated. Not only is it fun to race, it is also fun to watch. The folks here are fun to race with.

C & W raceway in Ashville NC. At first glance, this track will not impress you. BUT, once you run on the flat asphalt oval.... you can't help but fall in love with this place. A very fun track to race. The people that run the place are simply the best and warmest group of people. You can't help but have fun.

Easley SC. Flat oval, Kinda. They have approx. 5 degrees of banking on the corners. I don't care for the infield (Grass). But the racing on this race track is very fun. You can pass inside or outside. The people are great and will help in anyway they can. They also have Touring and Dirt at this facility. They only run Oval every other weekend. Again, If you are planning on traveling and racing, check the schedule. They have a killer hobby shop located in front of this facilty. The guys that are in there are great!

A new track has opened in Greeneville TN. Indoor Carpet. I raced it last season... and will run it again. The guys that built this raceway have worked hard and have turned this into a great place. In Fact, Arcor will run a big race at this place this fall I am told. Again, a great bunch of folks there!

I know that I have stated a great bunch of people at all the locations.... What do you expect.... They are Oval Racers... :-))

There are a number of other track in our area that are good tracks, but these are the ones that I have experience with.

Like Wheel'her said. GRCSR is one the nicest I've seen. I like it because it's more a "racing facility" than just a track. One cool thing is the pits are directly above the track, fun to watch from there. Several TV's to keep you updated on the heats. Fully stocked hobby shop. Family run by people that you can tell love the hobby. There are several really nice tracks in the Northeast.

There are a lot of really nice race tracks around,I think it takes the whole facility to make the grade as a top notch track IE:clean bathrooms, not portajohns, clean eating facility, fully stocked hobby shop, well maintained track and grounds around the track, fully capable pit area.It will take some of the veteran racers who have traveled quite a bit but I was wondering who they think has the #1 racing facility in the country now.It used to be whipporwill, but who is it now? I have been to quite a few around the country, but not all by no means. One of my votes would be for Rush and Sons not sure it will qualify though as they are closed down now.Burbs you've been there, what do you think?

i still prefer my home base.. we all do

Well, since everyone is saying their hometrack, my vote is for SpringCove International Speedway. :) After all, it is the oldest paved oval in the world!

But seriously, if the transitions would have been better at Lil Dega, that would be my vote. If you take everything in consideration as far as restrooms, a/c and pit area.

One criteria for a current great track should be that it's still open and have more than 4 regular racers a week. Otherwise it must not have been that great. ;)

pepe
08-10-2005, 06:27 PM
There are a lot of great tracks that for whatever reason don't have a great turnout everyweek, the pool of oval racers nowadays is VERY small so a "GREAT" turnout is debatable. For some tracks 5 or 6 guys is a great turnout, for others maybe 20 or 30,has nothing to do with the quality of the track. There doesn't have to be a gazillion people racing to be fun,all you really need is two.I've been to tracks with only four or five guys racing and had a great day of racing.OKAY! so the track has to be open,I'm going to pick the TRICLONE even though I've never been there I've heard nothing but great things and the pics are awesome, maybe get there at the next nats whenever they get it again.

One thing that bothers me is this.. indorrs on carpet, we have no problem pulling the racers,, bigger races, we get 30-50 guys.. outdoors, we get half what we do indoors.. I know people do other things in the summer, but when you have a track,(any track) it would be nice to have year round support..

we are very very lucky at the triclone.. The owner of it , basically has nothing to do with it anymore.. he retired early LOL.. He lets us run it as a club.. at the end of the year, and all the money is tallied, we pay him what we can.. and he is happy with that.. If the track needed racers to stay open, it would have died a long time ago.. our local shop was closed, (same owner). but we have lefthander rc for parts,. he has us stock like never before...SO YEAH I DO FEEL LUCKY.. i try to race as much as i can, but this summer has been slow for me.. I do however show up on race nights, and spend more money on food then i would racing LOL..

Being from the LEFT COAST, I would Love to go to a R/C Race held at DAYTONA SPEEDWAY...just for the History.

Hopefully they don't think thier ground is made of GOLD though.

I held 2 different races in a Parking Lot at California's IRWINDALE SPEEDWAY, and while the track is awesome, and the lot where I put on the event was cool too...it wasn't really worth $500.00 a day w/ NO Bathrooms, NO Power and NO Concessions.

It WAS really cool though to hold the races there, and while our event was going on, the BIG cars were on track practicing and such...made cool sound effects.

Keep em coming...and if you have web sites or pics, make sure to add them...I love looking at some of these tracks around the country...

sounds like Classic.
Indoor we have 35-60 for a weekly show, typically about 85-100 for a big race.

Outdoor we have about 12-18 pan cars. But we make up for it in 1/4 scales. I bet there are about 15 1/4 scales weekly now, some night even more so we still get our 30-40 guy turnout.
It's a shame we don't have more pan cars, our track is really smooth for them. I never had one scratch this summer on my chassis until i decided to drop it a bit and run small tires. Then I caught a rock, lol

Going by region,Southeast region, Carolina speedway would be a top contender (My hometrack) for the midwest I would choose Tri-clone,for the west coast I would choose the Veladrome track, for the northeast region, the Indy veladrome. We generally have 20-30 racers on a weekly basis at Carolina also, but this includes the TC's also which make up about half.

Well, if longevity does have something to do with this formula, we are blessed in the Albany NY area. The Capital District R/C Racers have been at it for 27 consecutive years! We’ve had the pleasure to race with National Champions like Todd Putnam, Mike Murphy, Brett Lund, Rod Priddle and many other great runners; many before my time.

Although the actual tracks have changed locations over the years the great racing and people continue to shine. Currently we run on a temporary 36 x 60 carpet track in the winter (yes that’s right, temporary) in the gym of the local Boys & Girls Club. We average 50 entries per week and reach 100+ for special events, running both oval and touring cars in the same program.

Outdoor dirt season is now held in two locations, points racing at a local hobby shop which features a “short” 115 foot groove combination banked and flat corners track and special events at the Pine Bowl R/C Speedway (my back yard 117 foot groove, high traction clay track).

Check us out at http://www.cdrcracers.com (http://www.cdrcracers.com/) click on the “History” link.

Mike,

If you think about all the summer activites people do versus winter it makes sense we have fewer guys at the tri-clone. There are people involved in "real" racing, kart racing, golfing, fishing etc etc. There is really nothing to do in the winter especially since it basically doesn't snow anymore in WI.

Also, I think there are a lot of guys who do like carpet racing who don't like capped racing. Definately more that way than the other way around. I pretty much fall into that group although I show up most every week ofthen twice a week depsite my now 90 mile drive one way. Although right now I'm leaning towards not outdoor racing anymore this year.

Win or lose I just haven't had fun outdoors. Never really do for whatever reason.

5 years ago when I first started racing at Classic, I bet we had 60-80 per week.

it's dropped off a bit since then, but what's cool is predominately its all pan cars, with the exception of some BRP 1/18th, so we are not running with Trucks, Buggies, etc
