Kidman to star in cult sci-fi remake

LOS ANGELES - Nicole Kidman will star in a remake of the cult sci-fi film Invasion of the Body Snatchers to be made by acclaimed German director Oliver Hirschbiegel, producers said today.

The movie, entitled Invasion, will be the first English-language film by Hirschbiegel, who made last year's Oscar-nominated film Downfall that chronicled the last days of Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler.

Kidman will play a psychiatrist who discovers that extra-terrestrials are at the origin of a mysterious epidemic altering the behaviour of human beings, Warner Bros, the producers of Hirshbiegel's Hollywood debut announced.

Kidman's character battles to protect her son who may hold the key to stopping an alien invasion in the remake of the 1956 classic science-fiction thriller.

"Invasion gives Nicole an opportunity to bring her depth and range to the kind of gritty action role that we haven't see her play before, as Oliver infuses the film with the brand of provocative, character-driven storytelling he's known for," said producer Joel Silver.

Silver, who also produced the hit Matrix film trilogy, will produce "Invasion" through his Silver Pictures.

The 38-year-old Australian megastar will get paid 16 million dollars for her leading role in the film, entertainment industry bible Daily Variety said.

Silver told Variety he chose Hirschbiegel for the high-profile assignment after watching the drama Downfall, starring Bruno Ganz.

"Oliver's movie was dark, eerie, smart and felt a bit claustrophobic, which is everything I want for this film," said Silver.

"Invasion" will be filmed on location next month in the US cities of Baltimore, Washington and New York City, Warner Bros. said. Kidman won the best actress Oscar for 2002's The Hours and starred in this year's </I>Bewitched</I> as a housewife witch.

Having gotten that out of the way, the Phil Kaufmann remake in 78 was an incredible flick, pushing all the right political paranoia buttons of the era ("how do you know my name?"), so you can remake/revisit this kind of thing successfully. I'm just not sure why you NEED to, since they did this one over again about 15 years ago.

Ya' Know Jose, I really NEVER have liked Nicole Kidman. She's just NOT my type of woman. Now Anglina Jolie or Even Jolie Fisher! now those are Women!!! Never thought Michelle Phifer (I'm Spellin' that wrong sorry) I guess I just prefer a more Brunette Woman (I mean Brunette when NOT upsidedown! lol Sorry Punchline to an Old very Risque joke) Sure I find a Few Blondes Okay,For one I REALLY think that this Actress Britney Murphy is Smokin' Hot (the wife sez she doesn't understand what I see in her lol) or Goldie Hawn (A Few Years ago!) or Drew Barrymore (and I think we like Drew cause she likes EVERYBODY! ahem...Or Singer Sophie B. Hawkin's (But what the Heck Does "Omni-Sexual Mean? lol) But for the most part I Prefer my Actresses to look more like Barbara Carrera or Rachael Ticotin From "Total Recall" Sonia Braga,oh and since we're talkin' about Kidman and she was with Cruise, I gotta tell ya' I think IMHO that Katie Holmes is just too Little Girlish lookin' for me.

That's when I realized how stunning she is... and that's given that the role wasn't one where she was particularly attractive and that I don't normally go for redheads. The other women you've mentioned, plus Mimi Rogers, I can see why people and aliens would like to snatch up. :devil:

Except for Angelina. She makes me afeared.... She's HOT, no doubt, but there's something about her that makes me think she'd eat me alive if she could (and not in the good way).

To be completely fair about Body Snatchers, it's already been remade two other times, so it ain't like this is some great desecration of an untouchable masterpiece. The two remakes both have a pretty good creepiness of their own, with heaps of flavor of the time in which they were made, and if they do this one right, it’ll have paranoia de jour as well.

JoséI can understand that. Did you see Angelina on "Inside the Actors Studio"? She's a talented actress, she's gorgeous, and she's . . . NUTS!

But Nicole Kidman? I've always adored her. She's a terrific actress and a true classic beauty. Well, that's what makes horse races, as they say.

I'm perfectly aware of that, and I enjoyed the one with Donald Sutherland probably more than the original. My comment was aimed more at the fact that it would be so nice to see something a little more original, or perhaps a remake of something a little less known. You'd think that after spending many hours in the theater over the last 40 years I'd know better, but there is the occasional glimmer of hope.

Nichole hooked me in the first thing I saw her in, running around in those cut-offs in Dead Calm. She's never looked as appealing to me in anything else, though the opening shot of Eyes Wide Shut wasn't too shabby either.

I have no doubt Angelina would be great for a memorable long weekend, but suspect she's be really annoying after that. Not to mention the creepy brother-Billy Bob baggage.

Still, she must do something right to so easily knock Jennifer Anniston out of the competition.
