This movie seems like it's gonna be to be a hard sell to the general public.
The advance word from fans is good.
I enjoyed the series a lot but having a poster that screams, IMO, typical-straight-to-video-SF-programmer-featuring-Jeff Fahey and/or Michael Pare ain't helpin'

Jeez, did ya WATCH the series?
It's River.

The film concentrates on River and Simon being fugitives, and River's mysterious programming by the alliance.

Here's the trailer:

Never heard of it, trailer looks great. Not a fan at all of Buffy et al, but this looks like a cross between the humor from "evil dead 2" and action from Riddick / 5th element. Great stuff.

Now we need a model of Serenity.
First was the series, now a movie, and maybe a series. Wouldn't that be something to see.

The Firefly movie bonus disk that comes with BSG Season 1 (Best Buy version) was pretty cool. I'm excited for the movie. I loved the series (never saw it live, but got the DVDs based on good things I'd read. They were true.) My wife likes it, too.

My better half absolutely hates going to the movies. She much prefers watching films at home. Serenity is the one film she insists we see at the theater. She had never even heard of Firefly until she saw my boxed set.

I noticed they changed the tag line from "You can't stop the signal" to "The future is worth fighting for".

I think they should just use "You can't take the sky from me..."

HA! you got that right. We certainly are on our own planet ("Can't see the trees for the smog"). Yes, heard of firefly, didn't realise this was talking about it, as I've never seen it. But looks like I'll have to hunt down a copy (original if it needs the support:) )

…having a poster that screams, IMO, typical-straight-to-video-SF-programmer ain't helpin'

I’m forced to agree with you regarding the onesheet, but it wasn’t for lack of effort. The ad agency responsible furnished the studio with dozens and dozens of different key art concepts to chose from. The final onesheet is the one test groups responded to most favorably, which is why Universal and Joss Whedon signed off on it.

To me it just didn't look like River.

An earlier version of the final onesheet was rejected by the MPAA because they thought River looked too young (the MPAA has serious issues with minors holding firearms in onesheets). The actress was re-photographed to appear older, and as a result she no longer looks like the character she portrays.

I noticed they changed the tag line from "You can't stop the signal" to "The future is worth fighting for". I think they should just use "You can't take the sky from me..."

Given the finished art, to whom would the “me” refer?

I think "The future is worth fighting for" works pretty well within the context of the story, and in any case it was the best line I could come up with in the limited time provided.;)

When I first heard it, that "future is worth fighting for" sounded like a regurgitation of XFILES' FIGHT THE FUTURE malarkey, but in retrospect, it sounds more like the Hemingway quote at the end of Se7en. As such, I have retroactively decided it is brilliant.

"you can't take the sky from me" is more evocative and definitiely true to FF, but if you have a gun in the poster along with that line, it COULD come off a bit too Rambo. You know, 'you can take my serenity once you prise my cold dead body from its flight deck.'

Gotta go watch OUT OF GAS again, excuse me.

I'm really hoping the movie does well.

I want to see more instalments.

I am really glad that SciFi is rerunning the series, hopefully it hooks a few more fans. Especially since they are heavily promoting it, and the behind the scenes stuff they are showing during its airings on Friday night.

Speaking as someone unfamiliar with the series I think it has more mass-market appeal than "You can't take the sky from me." Taken out of context, the latter seems a bit silly.

Curious to see if this movie will fly for audiences not up to speed with the TV show. Frankly, I have my doubts...

Whatever happened to Fincher anyway? Last I heard he was trying to adapt "Rendezvous with RAMA". I've never been a huge fan, but I do think his films demonstrate a lot of potential.

Whatever happened to Fincher anyway?

He's about to start shooting "Zodiac", based on cartoonist-turned-journalist Robert Graysmith's accounts of the notorious serial-killer who terrorized San Francisco in the early 70’s.

I've read the screenplay, and it's far and away the best material Fincher's ever had to work with. While delivering the requisite shock and suspense, the story is less about the murders and more about the debilitating obsession it creates for the detectives and reporters involved. Careers destroyed, substances abused, marriages and families abandoned, etc.

The cast includes Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr., and Gary Oldman.

I'm fuzzy on the details, but didn't it turn out that now they suspect most of the "Zodiac Letters" were actually written by a obsessed cop?

I'm pretty sure RAMA is still on indefinite hold. Freeman still has the rights, and he wants Fincher for it, but there are money issues, and I think conceptual issues as well. They went through a couple writers by november 2000 when I went to Revelation Entertainment's office to try to sell them on a 'making of' notion, and a year or two later I was hearing that Fincher wanted to just mocap actor faces and put them on cg bodies FOR THE WHOLE MOVIE in order to do weightlessness right. It sounded like a BAD idea to me then and now, and since PANIC ROOM left me cold, I wonder if he has gone badHitchcock on us, all technique. I sure as hell hope not, Se7en is one of my alltime faves.

The all-time classic David Fincher SFX brainstorm remains the alien dog suit he insisted upon having built for Alien3. The outtakes of the suit-wearing dog running down the corridor, which are included amongst the special features of the "Alien" boxed set, are among the funniest images I've ever seen.

Despite the potentially lurid subject matter, "Zodiac" is an intelligently written character piece. Hopfully Fincher will have the sense to dial down the visual pyrotechnics, trust the material, and let the actors do their thing.

Well, Joss has repeatedly said that you don't have to see the series to understand the movie.
I hope he is right. And don't really doubt him. I mean the man has already managed to take an unappreciated TV show that was killed before it even aired half a season, and turn it into a big screen event.

I'm not deluding myself into thinking this thing will go Spiderman kind of huge.
But I will be really happy if it brings in around $100 million. And I think it is do-able. Between the rabid fans that will see it multiple times. Good word of mouth so far. And hopefully nothing huge showing against it at the theaters.

OK, based on the reviews here of Firefly and the fact that no one has rubbished it, I went and bought season 1 (original copy!). Only to discover that Joss Whedon created it. Now, as I detest "Buffy", please tell me this is nothing like that show - PLEASE!!!!

The wife and I are watching the boxed set again, and episode now and then. Last night we watched "Heart of Gold," widely regarded as one of the "least good" episodes. Well, anything with Mindy Clarke as a madame can't be ALL bad! :)

But ya know what I thought the highlight was? The girl playing "Petaline" the pregnant hooker. Her facial expression throughout the ep were wonderful! Especially as she's in the throes of labor, and Doc Tam is telling her comforting things. Every time, she gives him a classic "are you on crack?!?! This HURTS!" kinda look. Priceless!

And River, who has almost nothing to do in this ep, has the best semi-philosophical line - staring into the pregnant girl's, um, crotch, as the baby crowns, she says "Who do you suppose is in there?"

And of course, Inara. One 30 second scene of her in tears sums up her feelings for Mal so beautifully.

The poster originally had crazy River but it looks like they changed it to make her look hotter to attract more people to the movie

You do not have to have watched teh TV series to like the movie but watching the DVDs makes the movie more enjoyable. You get to know their characters in the TV series and the slight difference in the movie is noticable.

2nd week box office numbers are also important so a lot of people are planning to see it multiple times to help boost the week to week numbers.

A lot of Firefly fans are not Buffy fans.

Ep 3 would have rocked if Joss wrote the dialogue.

I also had concerns about that and I could not judge after seeing the screening since i was already a fan. I was worried a non-fan would hate it or not think it was good at all.

At the screening we had here, I had heard fans who brought 2 people who have never seen the TV series both liked the movie.

I saw the long trailer this morning on E's Coming Attractionsthis morning, it looked REALLY promising. One slight disapointment, I've had my fingers crossed since I saw the low-res internet trailer that Richard Brooks would be coming back as bounty hunter Early Jubal, but sadly, that doesn't appear so.

Yeah, I hated Buffy too, until I saw Firefly...
Then I went back and actually watched more than the first 3 episodes of Buffy, which is what my original opnion was based on.
Good stuff.

I love Buffy. However when you mention Boffy I find a lot of people turn their brains off because it sounds silly.

We used to discuss the shows during lunch and people would ask what show it was since it sounded so interesting.

The quickly lost interest when we said it was Buffy

I've found there are generally 3 camps when it comes to Joss Whedon's TV shows (Buffy, Angel, Firefly)
Those that love it.
Those that hate it.
Those who haven't watched it.

It seems there are very few people that are 'in the middle'. Ones that thought it was ok but not really interested. Or thought it was ok, but not much see.

I think it is because, you either get Joss, or you don't.

Actually I watched one this morning(accidently recorded couple weeks ago)
After 20 hours of no sleep, carrying kids to school this am, I actually semi-wasted almost an hour watching it before going to bed. Semi-wasted meaning that I wasn't quite tired enough to go to bed, out of sleep meds. Show made me drowsy enough to go right to sleep! Hey, a non-habit forming sleep aide, imagine the possibilites!
