View Full Version : O/T: off-brand diecast at Big Lots
ParkRNDL 07-23-2005, 06:12 PM For anyone who collects some of the off-brand stuff, Big Lots just got a big lot (ha ha) of Majorette diecast. Singles, 2-packs, theme sets. Singles are $.49 but are limited in variety... 2-packs with a play mat seem to have a little little better selection, and are $1.49, and I didn't look too closely at the theme sets, but some are 2 cars, some are 3 or 4 with other toys (example... there was a neat circus set with 2 animals and I think 4 vehicles). I didn't put this in the general Diecast section because it seems kinda dead over there, and I know there are some guys here that collect lots of different brands...

thanks for the info....some of that stuff does make great stocking stuffers and office party treats for kids....
dipstick 07-23-2005, 09:16 PM Are all of them getting these as it seems like some get them and some don't - like with the JL stuff.
Thanks for the info....
TheDarkCutlass 07-23-2005, 09:25 PM one thing i don't like about the off brand stuff is that they most of the time they don't say what the car is, or list what cars they have in the series. Kinda hurts my hunt for oldsmobiles cuz you gotta examine each one to figure out what it is :p
MoparNut360 07-23-2005, 09:38 PM did you happen to notice any of the majorette el camino's?
ParkRNDL 07-23-2005, 09:50 PM Dip--only been to the one BL so far, so i dunno... anyone else?
DarkCutlass--Majorettes all have a make and model stamped on the bottom... the problem is that just about all the ones I saw today were European cars, with the exception of a couple of trucks and vans and an old Jeep Cherokee monster truck.
MoparNut--no El Caminos, sorry. Do they still make that casting? My kid has an old one, I think he got it for Christmas 3 or 4 years ago...
For those wondering about makes, I noticed Audis, BMWs, Porsches, VWs, and lots of those little microcars they drive in Europe, among others...

Swifty 07-23-2005, 10:07 PM Sounds right up my alley- especially if they've got the monster trucks.
MoparNut360 07-23-2005, 10:32 PM I didn't even know majorette was around still,I haven't seen them in quite a while.
Swifty 07-24-2005, 12:34 AM They're still around, and still making new castings. The problem is they've retreated to their home market of France. I haven't seen any here since Ames went out of business.
TheDarkCutlass 07-24-2005, 01:17 AM well, thanks for that info Park... save me from looking
dipstick 07-24-2005, 10:00 AM Majorette - THe north American distributor used to be about 2 miles down the road from me. DUe to customs and Import rules, he went belly up trying to create a distribution for them and not being able to get the product in a reasonable manner. Supposedly someone new has stepped up and US distribution is one of the goals of Majorette but I have not heard if they are succeeding.
THeir products are very well done - not to the caliper of JLs but definitely along the lines of Motormax, Welly and Realtoy. Because they are located in France - they do concentrate on European liveries by default.
Have to check what they have.
modsquad 07-24-2005, 11:56 AM I'm a big Majorette fan (esp the 60's vintage Majorettes). Are these new cars actually made in France or China? There are a few Big Lots near me so I will check them out and see what I find.
MoparNut360 07-24-2005, 01:00 PM I used to buy them at Jewel-Osco and a few other stores back in the day. They do (did) make a nice VW beetle casting,I have a few of them myself,as well as the 80's el camino. I'll have to drop by big lots and have a look-see.

Actually, that Beetle is one of the cars I just bought. They had it in light blue in a 2-pack with a weensy little red hatchback (Fiat, maybe? It's probably under the couch right now) My 3-year-old went nuts when I gave it to him because it's close enough to Herbie that he thinks that's what it is. (My 7-year-old has the REAL JL Herbie set. ) I also got a Renault Espace minivan that is generic-looking enough that the 3-year-old immediately identified it with Mommy's minivan (which is actually a Kia, but what does he know?)
