View Full Version : Windows Explorer Slow Down!
rctom243 07-17-2005, 09:37 AM I have a P4, 2.6 GHz, 448 MB Ram running Windows XP Home.
Everything runs great, MS Office 2000, Photoshop, FireFox, etc..
However when I launch Windows Explorer it is dog slow to launch. 20 to 30 seconds for the window to pop up. Then when I am done and click the "X" to close out the window it sits there for another 20 seconds before it closes out.
Any ideas????
One guy at work said I had too many items on my desk top. I did have about 25 and reduced it down to where I now only have 12 items (shortcuts) on my desktop and it's still dog slow, didn't help a bit.
Thanks for any help / suggestions.
Tom
zamac_man 07-18-2005, 11:47 AM How many process do you have running? To check push ctrl+alt+delete. A new little window will pop up and on the bottom left it will say. Processes ##.
If I am having problems I usually defrag, check for spyware and do a full test here

bugman 07-18-2005, 01:45 PM yeah, the # of items on the desktop doesn't really affect anything. and as you know, explorer is slow anyway, thats why we use firefox.... safer as well, but explorer is very prone to attacks, spyware, etc. a good spyware program is spybot s&d. free and it finds and removes spyware.

Hey BugMan, that's Windows Explorer, not Internet Explorer. I'm using Fire Fox and SpyBot S&D for sure.
3 Applications and 25 processes running.
I'll do the defrag.
Went to PC Pitstop and they wanted me to install Neptune to check my computer. Seems Fire Fox won't support Active X. I think I've got enough downloads for now.
Thanks much,
Tom
bugman 07-18-2005, 11:06 PM oh, sorry bought that, but as for firefox not supporting active x, its will let in the bad stuff basically.. well since its windows explorer, virus's, etc. can cause it, but also a good defrag will speed things up a bit, gets things in order.
rctom243 08-02-2005, 10:08 PM I did the defrag, ran spybot search & destroy then ran ad-aware, both Windows Explorer and the "My Computer" icon are dirt slow. 30 to 40 seconds to load and another 30 to 40 second to close.
Any more thoughts?
Thanks
Tom
