View Full Version : motor armature question
burbs 07-09-2005, 09:44 PM i have seen a few people do it and talk about it, but im curious if anyone has ny real info on it...
does polishing the stacks on the arm, improve performance in any way??? or is it just a cleaner look... i havent tried it, but i am curious about it...
Fl Flash 07-09-2005, 10:25 PM Wouldnt that be illegal ?
burbs 07-09-2005, 11:21 PM i dont think it is illegal... your not changing the motor, just cleaning it basically..
JPHRacer 07-10-2005, 01:29 AM Depends on how much the stack size is changed. Normally just polishing the stacks decreases windage, turbaulace, between the arm and the magnets. Milling the arm down to change the arm size is a compleatly different deal. Making the blank smaller decreases the effect that the magnets field has on the electromagnetic field generated by the arm. In some cases is killes off bottom end torque and shifts the powerband up, in other cases it can do the opposite. It depends on the motor and the situation.
I normally dont do it unless the arm gets re-balenced. Taking off the blueing (green suff on outside of arm) can make the arm out of balance. Its better to leave that stuff up to the winder.
But then again it never hurts to try stuff. I found that in just makes the motor sound cooler. A milled stack 7 turn sounds like a vaccume cleaner.

ROTFLMAO
If it's a big track it might help with some top end, most aren't really big enough to make it any advantage. But if you do, you'd need to rebalance the arm, and well it's a pain in the butt. It would be better to get the stack to the dia. that you want, have it wrapped and tied them balanced as a new arm.
Fl Flash 07-10-2005, 01:42 PM Depends on whose teching your motors? Have to find the rule but I beleive it states no removal of ANY material from stacks. Would this include the green colored sealer? How friendly are you with your Tech guy? LOL
Milky 07-10-2005, 01:49 PM Tech? LOL
Fl Flash 07-10-2005, 02:04 PM ROAR rule: 8.5.6.6.1
No modifications to the physical construction of the motor can, endbell or armature will be permitted ( e.g. adding or removing material from armature stack, changing the brush hoods from standup to laydown and visa-versa,relocating spring post).
Thats for stock motors.

DW is right!
The green film on the stacks acts as an insulator to the magnets and closes the gap to increase air movement (cooling effect).
By removing the green film you will be lighting the arm very little and reducing air flow at the risk of armature being out of balance. :freak:
Actually closing the gap without hitting the magnets would help more but I
think thats illegal.

No, I'm not a motor builder.
I just stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night!!
JPHRacer 07-12-2005, 01:42 PM Of course I'm right, I stayed at a holiday inn express last night too.
