Picked this up because I've always been a sucker for a good werewolf movie. First let me deal with my main beef:

In big letters on the DVD cover they trumpet "Unrated Version" in big letters right below top-billed Christina Ricci and Shannon Elizabeth. If you buy this expecting some hot extra extra footage of Christina or Shannon you'll feel ripped off. Neither gets nekkid, in fact there's no nudity in the movie period(Wes Craven is forgetting his roots!). And there is a bit more gore, but Cursed was rated PG-13 on it's theatrical release! What's added would have had no problem meeting the requirements for an "R". So in conclusion, I think the "unrated version" is a bit misleading and dishonest.

OK, the good stuff, the cast is pretty appealing and Wes Craven can still make you jump. The wererewolf make-up by Rick Baker is pretty effective. It's a good popcorn flick, and moves along pretty good. And the DVD looks and sounds very good, the 5.1 mix in some of the werewolf stalking and attacks are real well-done. And it has some fun with werewolf conventions and lore.

The rest of the bad: I usually like Christina Ricci but feel like she was wrong for this. The ending shows why great werewolf movies have unhappy endings, versus the "happy" ending here. The make-up by Baker looks great, but the few shots of the full body CGI werewolf in motion look unconvincing and phony. And the CGI transformation scenes are badly done, American Werewolf in London did them better 25 years ago! I knew who the "surpise" werewolf was 40 minutes before anybody in the movie. And a subplot about a gay character accomplishes the mean feat of appearing both forced by PC-ness, condescending to gays, and totally irrelevant to the plot.

Unless you are a werewolf completist, netflix it or rent it. But it's worth a look.

UNRATED has nothing to do with sex, violence, gore, or what the nature of the added content is in anyway. All it means is this version was never seen by the ratings board. If they add a scene with somebody brushing their teeth, it's an un-rated version, if it is not screened by the ratings board. That is why deleted scenes and alternate endings are labeled as "un-rated". I agree it is a deceptive marketing ploy but. just assume "un-rated" on a DVD cover is synomynous(sp?) with "extended version".

Was in theaters a few months ago, came out on DVD Tuesday.

I understand that. However it's been a common DVD practice that "unrated" usually means more nudity, sex, and gore that couldn't get past the MPAA, or all three! And in this case all you are really getting is "marginally more gore than a PG-13 picture". And I think the big "Unrated Version!" blurb in this case was purposely designed to mislead & dupe customers.

'sides, there is precedent for expecting something good from a unrated Shannon Elizabeth movie!

I found myself enjoying it. Nowhere near as much as American Werewolf in London, mind you.

I agree any CG werewolf scenes paled in comparison to Baker's live creature effects! When it was hopping along the cars in the parking garage it moved WAY too fast, and with little sense of weight - a common problem with CGI creatures. And the transformation scene was just - funny looking.

I never thought I'd utter these words, but Scott Baio was pretty good, and I liked the gal that played his publicist. And I enjoyed it too, it just could have been lots better. And with Wes Craven, Christina Ricci, and Rick Baker, it should have been better.

Though it's not mentioned in the SFX stuff, John, I suspect that transformation was a last minute replacement for something else that didn't work. I can't imagine anybody using that unconvincing CGI effect when they had Rick Baker on board, unless they had to.

You know, whenever I look at Christina Ricci, all I see is "Wednesday" from the Addams Family. She's a good actress, but the moment I see her face I just think "Wednesday".

Don't know why.

The two different versions of the DVD's were not that great of a difference. I have noticed that with a lot of the unrated versions of DVD's that have come out lately. I wish movies would be released like the re-release of Army of Darkness where they give you the two different versions of the movie in a two disc set.

I thought "Cursed" was a pretty cool movie. Nothing that really taxed your mind but kept you interested throughout. Ricci as mentioned, does remind me too much of "Wednesday" enough to the point where it was actually kind of distracting

She can have me any day of the week.

Actually, if you want to get the image of "Wednesday" out of your head, try watching her in Woody Allen's "Anything Else." From then on, whenever you see her you'll think "Neurotic Bitch."

They're still there Jose. Just right click on the red x's and click properties. You'll see the address, and can cut and paste it in your browser.

They are worth the extra effort, imho

I agree. That movie almost turned me off of women. Great Woody piece though.
