View Full Version : Dvd Player Trouble
Mitchellmania 07-05-2005, 09:18 AM I have a 2 1/2 year old JVC DVD player (not progressive scan). It's been
a great player, plays burnt DVD's all region, and all my movies. The problem
is about two weeks ago I got this Godzilla (burnt DVD) and tried to play
it and got a "NO DISC" in the reader. Ever since, on about every other disc
I play I get the same message, "NO DISC". Did the Godzilla DVD put a bug
in the system, or does it need to be cleaned?
Any suggestions?

Replace it.
We could try guessing at the problem and probably not have much luck. But, at 2 1/2 years old you got your money's worth out of that player. I've had players fail MUCH sooner than that.
The truth is that they new players are so cheap that it's not worth the trouble fretting over an older player...even if it was expensive at the time. It pained me when I had to replace my first $400.00 and $300.00 players. Today, I can pick up a major brand name progressive scan player for $90.00. A working "no name" player can be had for little more than $30.00.
Even if you clean the old JVC or otherwise restore some of the function, it's still in it's twilight years. Time for a new one.
Mitchellmania 07-05-2005, 11:05 AM I guess you're right. :(
I'll pick up one of the Progressive scan cheapies that play all region!
rw2516 07-05-2005, 11:45 AM "NO DISC" means the reader can't find the lead-in. All discs have a lead-in which the player uses to open the disc. The reason some cheap players give the "NO DISC" message when you put in a DVD-R is because they don't have the software to read the lead-in. DVDs and CDs have different lead-ins. You can put about 3 hours(I believe) of music on a dvd, copied from cds, but a DVD player will give the "NO DISC" message because it has determined the disc is a DVD-R and it can't find the lead-in because the disc has a cd lead-in. If you're getting the message with pre-recorded DVDs then something is shot.
Mitchellmania 07-05-2005, 12:00 PM It's wierd because some movie discs work and some don't.

There is all kinds of software used to author DVDs. Your player is able to read the leadin written by some software but not others. Players have compatibility software installed in order to compensate for the differences in software and burners(if a DVDR). Time to get a new one.
roadrner 07-06-2005, 08:11 AM It's not like they're that expensive anymore. I picked up an extra JVC, single disc, progressive scan unit for under a $100 about a year ago. Probably even cheaper now adays. Cheaper to replace than repair. rr
Dave Hussey 07-06-2005, 08:19 AM Mitchellmania - Didn't you post on another thread that you have recently taken up smoking? I'll bet dollars to donuts that the laser is dirty with cigarette residue. The Godzilla disc just happened to be the first one that the dirt caused a problem with.
Huzz,
(who abhors waste when a q-tip and some rubbing alcohol to clean the laser can save the day. And if that doesn't work, THEN go out and buy a new one.)
And for god's sake man, give up the frakkin' cigarettes.

sbaxter 07-06-2005, 09:52 AM I had a JVC seven-disc changer that gave up the ghost after about 18 months -- too soon even taking into account the short lives these things seem to have. It did it the same way Mitchellmania described; started giving me the "NO DISC" crap, until it got to the point that it was giving that message 90 percent of the time.
I got a Panasonic five-disc changer to replace it. According to Consumer Reports, Panasonic is one of the more reliable brands for DVD players. I also decided to spring for the service contract this time ... I think it runs for three years and didn't add all that much to the price.

Okay...............
Big lesson learned there.

I had this exact same problem with a very expensive Sony DVD player. I was told that any (most?) DVD players made before mid 2004 have some problem with the lenses used. I don't claim to know what that means, just what I was told. I could play 90% of original Discs, but all -R discs were basically useless. I was also told (by the same people selling the new DVD players of course), that cleaning the lens etc would not make any difference. Didn't bother trying as the cheapest DVD player in the shop that had DTS has out performed my ridiculously priced Sony!
Zorro 07-06-2005, 04:41 PM Mitch - you need one of these. It's state of the art and theft proof.

What brand is that? How much?!!
Zorro 07-07-2005, 11:33 AM You know, I ran across it by accident while surfing some of the Bat-sites. It was linked and I could have sworn it was Amazon but a search turns up nothing there. Sorry. Seems like it was about $80 bucks.
Bruce Bishop 07-07-2005, 01:20 PM I don't remember the price on the Bat-DVD player, but our Utah Toys R Us have them in stock, which is where I saw them.
Mitchellmania 07-13-2005, 01:10 PM I tried one of those DVD disc lens cleaners I bought from WalMart.
After that my DVD wouldn't play any dics! I called Waly world and talked to the manager, and she told me " get the machine profesionally cleaned and we'll pay for it. I told her Best Buys had a DVD player for a few dollars more and
she said, go buy it and we'll pay for it! So I have a Cyberhome DVD player All
Region player- and I got a two year warantee. Also I got a $10.00 rebate to boot!
