View Full Version : Galactica boycott
rw2516 06-29-2005, 05:47 PM Season one of the new Battlestar Galactica hits store shelves on 7/26. Best Buy store shelves that is. Best Buy has an exclusive until 9/20. Price is $70 for 13 episodes. I say blow it off until September when you can get it anywhere for probably near half that price. Buying it from BB will only encourage this kind of crap from the studios and retailers.
Babaganoosh 06-29-2005, 05:50 PM It is unlikely the price will go down. The Stargate season box sets seem to have been fixed since day one. The only way they'll offer a deal if if you buy sewasons 1-7 and you get season 8 for 50% off or for free or something.
iamweasel 06-29-2005, 06:00 PM Well I get StarGate at Sams for like 42 bucks a season and even the 50 it usually is elsewhere ain't all that bad. I would not pay what BB wants for Galactica. I certainly won't give Paramount what they want for ANY Trek seasons either.
I paid what A&E wanted for U.F.O. only because the odds of it even coming close to mainstream release were nil.
rw2516 06-29-2005, 06:55 PM With Best Buy as exclusive retailer there is no competion and no price break like DVD Planet or DDD would offer. Even at the $70 it would be about 49.99 at those retailers. Plus you have to figure in that Best Buy's price reflects the added cost they had to pay for the exclusive. They will most likely advertise "Available for a limited time only, only at Best Buy" to fool people into thinking that once the exclusive is over it will be withdrawn and no longer available, and a lot of people will probably think that. July or Sept., doesn't matter to me. I'll wait until the next DDD 20% sale and pick it up for $30 or less. I probably wouldn't watch it until the show's been off the air for awhile anyway. I still haven't cracked the shrinkwrap on any of the SG-1 sets and probably won't until a good 5 years after the show ends for good. It just ticks me off when they try to take people like this.
Sword of Whedon 06-29-2005, 10:26 PM You can get Stargate 1,2,3 from amazon.ca for $30 each
They will have a first week discount on the set, and get ready for a lot more BB exclusives. They have the money and desire to make them happen, and the studios love them because they get mad cash
Be happy it's not permanent exclusive
And Space: Above and Beyond will be exclusive in or around August, as well as Tru Calling Season 2 (and probably a lot more)
mactrek 06-30-2005, 02:15 PM I taped them (the new BSG's) as they aired ... I can wait for the price to come down ... or September ... Which ever comes first.
El Gato 06-30-2005, 03:02 PM A friend of mine burned them on DVDs from the SkyOne website. I think the main difference is the score, so I can ignore the British opening theme. I don't need to hear the correct, American* version badly enough that I need to ru$h to get it first thing.

*That's a "Simpsons" joke for those who didn't get it. Kudos for the first person to ID the episode where that came from
MangoMan 07-01-2005, 07:11 AM Universal HD has been showing them in HD for the past few weeks. The difference is incredible. And I just recently got a DVD recorder, as well, so I'll be making my own DVD collection. :D

Best Buy has just dropped the price on the Battlestar Galactica season 1 set coming on July 26. The set was posted with a $69.99 price, which has now been lowered to $49.99. I'm sure fans will be much happier with the corrected price.
Preorder the set from BestBuy.com.

In any case, I think you were really proposing a Best Buy Boycott, not a BSG boycott, per se
KyuMan 07-07-2005, 04:15 AM Actually, I noticed that there's a notation that this set is the "UK" version. As I recall from reading a post somewhere, there were some notes that there were only deleted scenes as extras, when there was an opportunity to add all the interviews and podcasts, plus the documentary "lowdown" shows.
Does anyone know if a "US" version is in the works? is this really all that's going to be released for season 1?
BEBruns 07-20-2005, 03:19 PM For those wondering if you should get the Best Buy version, it looks like the general release version will be worth the wait:

PhilipMarlowe 07-20-2005, 03:49 PM The heck with Best Buy! Looks worth the wait!
Griffworks 07-20-2005, 05:18 PM Heck yeah! And I'd not hesitate to buy that set for $10 more, since it includes the Miniseries, as well as all the commentary. Definitely worth it, IMO.
spe130 07-20-2005, 11:12 PM Yep. Anyone who buys that Best Buy exclusive set either already has the miniseries, or simply needs their head examined. I'll be waiting.
jheilman 07-20-2005, 11:42 PM I already own the miniseries but I'm still waiting 60 days and buying the superior version.
But, are these extras all the same stuff that was on the website?
Griffworks 07-21-2005, 12:09 AM I believe that a lot of them likely are what's available on the SciFi.Com site. However, you never know how long those will be up there. Plus, it'll be nice to have them all in one place that I won't have to DL from and can carry around wherever I might go. ;)
Anyhow, I own the miniseries, but am still buying this Season One box set when it comes out - and I also already have a Season One box set of the UK airings from SkyOne and SkyMix that a friend DL'd and gave me. Keepin' 'em, tho, 'cause it's really kewel to have them to remind me of the gift - and the fact I got to see everything from "Litmus" on before lots of other folks in the U.S. :)
jheilman 07-21-2005, 12:52 AM I just hope some of the stuff is exclusive to the DVD set. There's no question that I'm buying it. This series is simply the most fun I've had with a sci-fi TV show since TNG's glory days. Right now I'm watching the season 2 premier for the third time.
Oh yeah, Gaeta's a cylon. :)
