I just purchased the 1:18 scale General Lee by ERTL. The packaging clearly states “Opening Doors & Hood,” but I can’t seem to get the doors open.

I realize the doors on the General on the TV show were stated to have been welded shut. So, I was wondering if, in like manner, the doors on this die cast car are not meant to open.

The doors look as if they should open on my die cast car, as the door itself is a separate piece, and I can see what appears to be the hinging mechanism.

Anyone know what gives?

Well, to answer to my own question, I decided to disassemble my General Lee to see what was going on.

I unscrewed and carefully removed the chassis. Sure enough, I found a plastic “wedge” that was inserted into the door hinging. The wedge was obviously designed to keep the door from opening. I unscrewed each door from its hinge, removed the wedge, and now the doors open fine.

Strange way to ship...without instruction on how doors are to be released after shipping..? ..only familiar with 1:18 scale cars being shipped with the plastic wrap around shipping straps..
