I've heard of similar problems with the savage (although I haven't experienced it yet). The solutions I've seen involve raising or lowering the tank so that the pull of gas is the same throughout the tank. Otherwise, the gas level is higher for the first half (runs richer because it doesn't have to pull as hard for the gas) and lower for the second half, resulting in the motor leaning out. Another option I've seen is to mount a secondary tank higher than the intake so that the fuel flow remains consistent throughout the run. I'll see if I can find some pics and post them, but you might also look over on savagecentral.
Hope this helps,
Brian

Have you checked for a air leak in the tank primer? Primers have always been known as problems from what I hear.
