View Full Version : Any Interest in a Re-release of the J2 Crew Kit?
flyingfrets 06-10-2005, 09:56 PM Already posed this question in the Swap & Sell forum, but maybe that wasn't the best place...
If you need extra Crew for those "spare" J2 kits or missed out on the first release of this kit in 2003, is there enough interest to make re-releasing this sought after kit worthwhile?
I've already been approached by a caster who is well known here and at Cult's place about doing another run of the kit.
Though I still have some reservations due to the first release being recast, I've been questioned about the availability of this kit frequently since it went OOP and am seriuosly considering the venture if enough of you are interested.
If so, here's your chance...

yeah !!,..... I sure can use a set !!
Brent Gair 06-11-2005, 10:03 AM I'll commit to buying TWO sets.
Dave Hussey 06-11-2005, 11:50 AM Sounds interesting, but where can I see a picture and how much will it cost?
Huzz
Hey Frets!!!!!!! HowZ it goin??
flyingfrets 06-11-2005, 08:46 PM Pretty good Y3a! How ya been?
flyingfrets 06-11-2005, 09:11 PM Huzz, since I haven't gotten a quote on the casting yet, I can't tell you exactly what the retail price will be yet, but I'm aiming to keep it far lower than the first issue of the kit. I'll know more once I see if there's enough interest to justify negotiations with a caster.
Any personal photos I had of the kit were stored on my old drive and are long gone, however I'm attaching some pics of a build-up from another member of HobbyTalk which not only show that the figures work on both levels of the Jupiter 2, but in the freezing tubes as well! The circular bases the figures are attached to are not part of the kit and were his idea as well (and a pretty good good one at that as they allow the figures to stand without being glued to the deck and also permit mobility of the crew!).

lisfan 06-11-2005, 11:37 PM cant wait to get mine. ill probably get another set too Don for my second jupitorII. i hope you someday offer the spacepod
Dave Hussey 06-12-2005, 06:54 AM Wow - that is way cool!
Thanks Fretz!! I'm definitely interested, although dang it all, I only have one J2 kit so I guess I'll only need one crewset.
Can ya still get the J2 anywhere these days?
Huzz
veedubb67 06-12-2005, 09:24 AM I'd certainly be interested. I've been collecting parts for my J2 for a couple of years now. I've got Cult's book, fusion core and astrogater lights, lighting panels and Tango Papa decals. Now all I need are some figures!!!
flyingfrets 06-12-2005, 11:53 AM Certainly getting more responses than I did at "Swap & Sell!"
If you know of any other modelers interested in this kit, direct 'em over to this thread 'cause I need roughly 35 pretty firm commitments before I can give this project the green light again.
Over the past 2 years, I've gotten enough questions about the availability of this kit that I probably could've sold out 3 or 4 runs of it. Unfortunately, the requests were sporadic, and what I need is enough people in one place at one time who can say,"Yes, I'll buy this kit" in order for me to be able to re-release it since a production run of the kit will generally yield about 50 kits.
Sadly, not being independently wealthy (and being a single Dad with 3 kids) means I have to rely on pre-selling to fund the project.
Though I prefer dealing with the guys on the BB since you all understand modeling, can appreciate the work involved in bringing a garage kit to market and if you're interested in this project, you're obviously a LIS fan, the offer for this kit is open to any and all modelers.
Just send 'em over here!
A Taylor 06-13-2005, 11:40 AM I have a set and they are really nice. I reviewed them in the column when the were originally released, but they were sold out by the time the issue went to press!
I had some angry emails over that, dude.
Make them and make enough to sell through to people who don't watch Hobbytalk like a hawk, willya?

Ignatz 06-13-2005, 12:43 PM Great news. I hope this goes through as I missed out on the initial offering. I'll run a link over at The Clubhouse (http://www.theclubhouse1.net/forums/viewforum.php?f=10) too if there's anyone over there interested as well.
Gerry-Lynn 06-13-2005, 02:53 PM Hello Flying Frets - I would be interested in a set, too. They look great.http://www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/images/icons/icon10.gif

Sorry 'bout that Anthony :p . Seriously, I would've loved to keep the kit in production, but I'd also already been recast by the time the issue hit the stands. Based on my casting costs alone, I couldn't compete so I pulled the plug. Hoping the caster I have in mind can do the job at a rate that will allow me to compete even if I'm recast again...this time to THEIR disadvantage.
AZbuilder 06-13-2005, 10:45 PM You can put me down for at least one set. I have 2 of the Jupiter 2 kits, One that I am going to re-do in a Crash site Dio. one of these days and the other still in the box and shrink wrap. I have the Papa Tango decals the Skyhook replacement seats and landing pads only need to get the light sets and the deck light panels.

skydivertak 06-14-2005, 11:03 AM I'm asuming this is for the 12" Jupiter 2. If so, I will be interested in perhaps 2 sets, maybe 3 if my bank will let me, LOL.

flyingfrets 06-14-2005, 07:40 PM This kit is scaled specifically for the Polar Lights version of the Jupiter 2.

The-Nightsky 06-15-2005, 07:39 AM can you give us a ballpark figure on the price Frets? I really want a set of these if the budget will allow.
flyingfrets 06-15-2005, 06:29 PM No, unfortunately as yet I don't have any idea of a price point myself. I can tell you we are getting pretty close to the stage where I will start negotiating with casters for the job.
I don't like yanking people's chains & I don't want to start talking seriously with ANY caster till I'm pretty sure the project will be a reality.
I will start with the caster who approached me since he is also a HobbyTalk member and if I can keep this project "in house" so to speak, I'd rather swing the business his way if we can reach mutually agreeable terms.
If things don't work out there, I want to be able to say to another manufacturer, "Caster A can do the job for this price. Can you beat it (Or match it if the casting quality is better)?" At that point, I have to put up or shut up. As the old line goes, "Money talks and bullsh!t walks."
We'll know soon...I'm guessing within a week if the responses keep coming in.
veedubb67 06-16-2005, 02:02 PM Fretts,
Great news! Keep us in the loop, whatever your decision is.

I've been away for a few weeks but I'm in for 2 sets
bogart 06-27-2005, 01:22 AM Hey That's my J2 in the photos. How Exciting!
I purchased the crew kit last year, directly from CultTVman himself. I really lucked out because it was the last he had.
It really is a marvelous kit and Frets should be proud of the quality. I wasn't sure if my hand would be steady enough to paint them (they're quite small). But it went very well. Their size works on either the upper or lower level.
The disks on their feet are actually the magnetic material that is used for the magnets that you'd stick on the fridge. I purchased some sheets that are sticky on one side and are normally used to stick business card to. The original plan was to cut the material and glue it to the under side of the decks and then to their feet. The thought being that they'd then magnetically stick to the floor. But the plastic was too thick for such weak magnets. Therefore I just cut the discs and stuck their feet to them....like green army men. I can now move them anywhere in the ship. The glue on the magnets is not strong and if they become dirty, I just cut a new disk and stick their feet to them.
Cheers,
jeff (bogart)

flyingfrets 08-30-2005, 08:28 PM Sincere apologies to all.
As those of you waiting for these kits are aware, my father was taken very ill in July. I came to West Palm Beach expecting the worst, but genuinely believed I would be home by the end of the month.
Though at times, the "cure" was worse than the symptom, it finally appears my Dad will make it through this ordeal. Over the past 7 weeks, I have to admit, e-mails, bulletin boards & such haven't been at the top of my list of priorities.
I don't mean to imply that the people who've been friends & loyal customers aren't priorities, but even at 44, I guess I still haven't outgrown the thought that my parents will be around forever and I just got lost in refocusing my attention on my Dad.
I will definitely be home on September 11. I DO appreciate your patience & understanding. Those of you who still want the kit, please e-mail me the first week of September (I've still got almost 2 months of e-mail to weed through yet & I don't want to delete relevant things such as this). It will ship on my return.
Those of you who would prefer a refund, I do understand your frustration and I will also honor your request. Please also e-mail the first week of September. Refunds will also go out the same day the kits ship.
To those of you who believe I am less than straight-forward, I apologize and I do understand why you may believe that under the circumstances, but as most on this board can tell you, I am genuinely a fair person to deal with.
Again, sincere apologies to all.
bert model maker 08-30-2005, 11:07 PM Hi Don, glad your Dad will be ok !!!, make sure to take care of yourself as well !
