float is good doesn't seem to be running rich i was thinking maybe a bad head gasket or a crack compression is 175 left 185 right

hmm, well, one way to see is to take the filter off, and let it set and watch if the carb fills up or runs a little fuel. gas can get in through the breather, and if enough builds up in the combustion chamber if it runs straight. can bypass the rings like that. if the float is good, make sure the inlet needle shows no wear and doesn't stick, and that the seat is good.

WHITEMAN, are you sure your compression gage is working correctly? 185psi is a bit much for a small engine. It should be closer to 140psi-150psi.
BTW, your problem with the gas in the crankcase is either the float or the needle and it's happening when the mower is sitting for a long period of time. I've had many mowers that did this exact same thing...they would have a leaky needle that would allow gas to run back through the breather, but the engine would run like normal.
