View Full Version : Duratrax Evader
lholmes 05-23-2005, 11:10 AM I'm new at this...I bought my son an Evader st for his 10th birthday....he has had it 3 days and we have had many problems. Twice the gear in the servo was stripped ....the battery isn't holding its charge (1500). I'm very disappointed in this toy...maybe he is too young for this...anyone got any ideas...or just try to sell it?? Thanks
alltech 05-23-2005, 11:21 AM ill take it 50 bucks plus 15 shipping?
hankster 05-23-2005, 04:14 PM As you have found out, sport grade RC cars and trucks are NOT toys. They are capable of high speeds and will break if they hit something at those speeds. There are a couple of Evader threads here that you might want to read to help you keep your Evader running.

What do you mean by isn't holding its charge? Your only going to get about 5-6 minutes of runtime with a 1500. These vehicles use a lot of power to attain the speeds that they do.
spyhunter50 05-23-2005, 06:11 PM we have here 3 evader st we like them a lot ... the motor that come with the evader st are junk... you should get a trinty motor.. and the servo keeps stripping if because you have the servo savor srew down to tight.... and you should get a 3000 mah batt pack.. if you have any question... i will be happy to aswer them the best i can....
thebeave 12-22-2005, 12:36 AM go to towerhobbies.com to find your parts (thats where i get almost all of mine)
the new motor trinity has came out with (Co27 pro, worth your money) , seems to have a lot of rpm and power
as far as the battery goes for bashing you should get the epic 3000 pack for around $18, great pack for messing around with
and as far as the servo... just loosen the screw like hunter said to

Do some research on the truck and the problems you are having. If the truck is running into everything in sight then I can see why the servo gears strip. They put low end servo's in them and and true hard hits can cause the gears to strip. You can buy metal gears for some servos to replace the plastic ones but not sure on this one.
For the battery - what charger are you using? You might have gotten a bad pack also. If it is not a peak detection charger and is a timer you have to watch and pay attention to when you are charging. If the pack gets to hot then you might have killed the pack off or if it is to cold then you might not have gotten a good charge into it.
List what gear you are running and I am sure someone on the board can help. That is why the board exists.

lazerpunk 12-22-2005, 08:41 AM I think you mentioning you are new at this best describes it all. Don't be discouraged, there is a learning curve with this hobby.
As for your son being too young, I don't think this is a problem. His driving skills will have to improve before you can expect him not to break parts. My daughter has been racing for 2 years she is 9yo. She runs on road with a TC4 and off road with a Losi MF1. All of her equipment matches mine. I pride myself on the fact she finishes all of her races without breaking. I tell her over and over slower is faster, and you can't win if you don't finish.
One of the biggest problems a new racer makes, is buying a bunch of $20 servos and gears for them, when buying a $100 metal gear servo could be the last servo you ever buy.
Hanks comment is right on, Look for a good condition use Losi or Associated truck. (See what the guys at the local HS race. Buy that, you will always have parts available)
Stick with it, Racing on Saturday or Sunday with my Daughter are the best days of the week. When your kid wins the Q main for the first time, it will seem like it's the A main at the nationals. It makes it all worth it...
Good luck.

tommckay 12-22-2005, 09:54 AM He didn't indicate he was racing, so I assume you're using the Evader to run around the driveway, in the street, or in a dirt lot somewhere (Basically what we call "Bashing")?
Your 10 year old is probably suffering from the "one speed" syndrome, meaning he's either full throttle or off. This will cause him to run into things more frequently and make crashes more severe & breaking it more often. Adjusting the Servo Saver and a little coaching on throttle control will go a long way towards reducing repairs.
Set up a small course in your driveway or in a dirt lot for him to drive around, use small stuff as markers and show him the driving line he should follow. have him drive the truck around it s.l.o.w.l.y following that line and gradually increase speed on it as he goes & is keeping it under control. He just needs more practice at the controls that's all.
scootr117 12-22-2005, 11:32 AM There have been alot of those sold at the LHS and the only thing's that seem to be a problem are the servos and the occasional control arm. The guys and gals who bought them to race in an upstart electric program at the local indoor dirt track have great luck with them. They actually finished the first season 2ND and 3RD in the final points....Give it some time and I'm sure it will be a good truck to use on or off the track for your son.
