View Full Version : Has Reproductions Affected The Price Of Originals?
A/FX Nut 05-18-2005, 10:07 PM Another thread on this BB has me asking, Has the reproduction of Thunderjet slot cars affected the price of the originals? Examples would be the 641/2 Mustang, Willy's, and 68' Charger. And the Tuff One chassis. What do you folks think? Randy. :)
sethndaddy 05-19-2005, 05:05 AM I think it did a little. I for one will always buy a remake before spending big bucks on originals. just look at the 2 tone green nomad.
rodstrguy 05-19-2005, 12:15 PM I believe it may have temporarily lowered the prices, but then they went back up when more people try to get the originals as it brought more people back to slots. All you have to do is try to find the Nomads and Vettes.
roadrner 05-19-2005, 11:25 PM Don't believe it did. Originals seemed to maintain their respective value, repops just gave us non collectors a chance to get a knock off (or a few of them) for a respectable price and opened up the opportunity for some customs. IMO. rr
ParkRNDL 05-20-2005, 09:21 AM I agree, I don't think it hurt. Check what original GTOs and Chargers are getting on Fleabay. Mustangs are somewhat cheaper, but I think they've just always been more common...
Now, I HAVE seen a couple cases where sellers have advertised JLs as original Auroras, whether it was ignorance or intent to deceive. THAT can hurt the hobby, but I guess that's a different question...

micyou03 05-20-2005, 02:15 PM Something sure did. The prices of originals are way down now. I had to pay between $30 and $50 for most of my original Auroras two and a half years ago. Now they can be had for $18-$30 in most cases. I'm not sure why, but they are cheaper now.
sethndaddy 05-20-2005, 06:43 PM I sold an afx blue/green #17 chevelle for about $130.00 right before johnny lightning released their version. Since then I havent seen that car go for more than 50-60 bucks. maybe I was just lucky.
ParkRNDL 05-20-2005, 07:21 PM Jeez... where have I been? Don't Tjet Chargers still go over a hundred bucks? If they're down below 50, I gotta surf on over to Ebay and get bidding... that's one of the few original Tjets I don't have ANY of that I still want. Got plenty of the JLs...
i guess you're right on cars like the Chevelle stocker and the Javelin... I never really followed the prices of the originals before/after JL...

22tall 05-20-2005, 07:37 PM Ecomomy good-price high. Ecomony bad-price low.
micyou03 05-20-2005, 11:11 PM I think it has more to do with the economy. However, before I began collecting I had to buy colectors items to run, and I'm sure there were plenty of people bidding on collector cars just because they wanted something to run. Now with the release of the JLs the buying collectors items to run element, I feel has been significantly reduced.
micyou03 05-20-2005, 11:14 PM Let me add, I am very happy and gratful that JL and others have produced these cars whether it did or did not reduce the value of originals. Please keep them comming!
A/FX Nut 05-21-2005, 08:58 AM In my opinion I think it has affected the Willy's and the Mustang. But not the Charger. There is 3 different manufactures of the Willys and Mustang. And they are all different too. Maybe Road Race Replicas isn't, I don't have one to compare. I compared the Model Motoring, Johnny Lighting, and original Aurora side by side and noticed the differences in the back window and doors. I've noticed at the Midwest Show over the last few years Supply, Demand/ Desirability has played a part in price. Some vendors at the show will sell at lower prices while others sell at a higher price. I've seen some really great deals. MTYODER got a Tuff Ones red/white/blue AMX for $20.00, chassis and uncut body solid C-8. Ebay I think has played a part in prices. Some folks thought it might drive them way up. I don't think it has. And I've seen some good deals on it as well, although not as many as at the show. I'll shut up for now. Randy.
micyou03 05-21-2005, 11:38 AM The first two cars I was after about 2 1/2 - 3 years ago were the Aurora Tuffones RWB AMX and the Tuffones Cougar. I ended up paying $45 plus shipping for the Cougar on ebay, and $50 for the AMX at a show. Now I am seeing them go for $26 on ebay.
