5th Annual WDRA Summernationals on the Horizon

In 2001, when WDRA founder Jeff Rupert began planning the first Summernationals, he had a vision. A vision that the Summernationals would one day become the premier dirt oval race in the northeast. The 5th annual edition of the event could very well make that vision a reality.

2005 finds a new leader at the helm but the goal remains the same. "Last year we were knocking on the door of 100 entries. This year I think we’ll blow right by it", said new WDRA president, Paul Brauer. With the addition of a great facility in Fountain Raceway, and the addition of Nitro racing, last year’s record number of entries is expected to be surpassed.

The high-banks of Fountain Raceway in Ontario, NY will play host to the 5th annual WDRA Summernationals on June 18th & 19th. Fountain last hosted the Summernationals in 2003. The event, at that time, was comprised of two separate races, one held at Fountain and the other held at Fingerlakes Raceway. Terry Schmitt swept both days of modified competition, while Adam Brown and Henry Ketch, Jr. each took a win and a second place in stock competition.

The "unofficial" beginning to the Summernationals weekend is on Friday June 17th at 7:00 when Fountain hosts the 5th leg of the WDRA Super Dirt Series. Two rounds of qualifying and bump-up mains will comprise the "warm-up" to the Summernationals. Saturday & Sunday’s Summernationals is round 6 of the SDS.

The Summernationals will kick off on Saturday, with doors opening at 8:00 am. Check-in and sign-ups will end at 11:00. At noon, single car time trials for each class will set the heat race line-ups. The first 2 rounds of heats will follow.

On Sunday, doors will again open at 8:00, with a concourse competition sponsored by DeMallie Racing Products and McAllister Racing beginning at 11:00. The 3rd and final qualifying round followed by 50 lap mains with 2-car bump-ups will round out the day.

Get your entry in early. The first 75 entrants will receive a custom embroidered ball cap. An entry form can be found at http://www.rochesterrc.com/wdra/files/WDRA_Flyer.pdf (http://www.rochesterrc.com/wdra/files/WDRA_Flyer.pdf) .

Throughout the weekend, there will be give-aways compliments of Fountain Raceway, Putnam Propulsion, Whip-Lash Batteries, CDK R/C Bodies, VinylTrix, and DeMallie Racing products.

Raffle tickets for the Kranzel’s Terminator kit will be on sale all weekend for just $5 a chance. The winner will be drawn on Sunday, just before the mains.

Stay tuned to www.rochesterrc.com/wdra (http://www.rochesterrc.com/wdra/files/WDRA_Flyer.pdf) and www.dirtoval.com (http://www.dirtoval.com/) for details on rules, and area accomidations.

Ok, I did some more calling around....found a place called the Hi-Way Rest Motel in Webster, rooms range from $42-$59/night. Pictures on their website ( http://www.hiwayrestmotel.com ) look nice....probably less shady than the other one I posted, but a little farther away...

I also found a Super 8 in Webster. Called too late to get a manager to talk about group rates, but the normal rates are in the area of $71-$77/night.

Ontario Motel. Just west of the track on RT 104. My good friend Terry Brown tells me that he would classify it a a place a racer might stay at, but you wouldn't take your wife too...clean, A/C works, shower...what more do you need? I called there today: $45 per night, 585-265-1881.

I'll check out some others tomorrow....there is a Fairfield Inn not too far from the track, but their website tells me that there is nothing available for 6/17-18.

this info is from the wdra director himself, Paul Brauer, off www.dirtoval.com

Only a few more days!!!

For anyone who is coming, Fountain has a ton of room indoors for pits, as well as some room outside for those who like to bring tables and EZ ups.

See you all there

WOW what a race put on by the Fountain Group ....The track was smooth and very fast and got faster as the weekend went on ......THis is the kind of racing OVAL use to be ...I am a big fan of the dirt racing going on in the northeast .....Congrats to Lil Pete ,Terry and all the other winners 128 entries and not a glitch all weekend .....

IDEA _______--Fountain needs to have another race for the cash prizes like they did for off road and carpet......

That would draw even more racers to this awesome track or tracks since they have 4 tracks in the same area.......

TO the staff Thanks for all your hard work and it really showed ...This is my new home in the summers .....Look out the ROCKET is back in the dirt....

Thanks for the kind words guys.....you have no idea how nervous we were when the track got rough.(you might have been able to tell from the look on my face).4 days of non-stop rain will do that.....I put 5 miles on the BMW packing the track.

Rocket.....you should give yourself a pat on the back as well....you ran excelent all weekend. We race every Thurs. Fred knows how to build a car that is easy to drive.

I have to give a big thanks to Todd Putnam as well.....my motors were smooth, consistent and fast all weekend long. AND....he did all that and managed to get into the show into both classes. Thanks again Todd.

I would also like to thank all of you that made it out to the race.....its all of you guys combined that made the weekend fun. 122 entries is awesome.

Just wanted to say Thanks and job well done to Bulldawg, The Fountain staff as well as my team and fellow racers for a fun event. Good job bouncing back from the rain delay...Wally's becoming quite the R/C Howie Commander. I had a boatload of fun, got to meet some new faces and make some new friends, and that's what racing is all about.

Special Thanks to Terry for his help, support and victories along with Fred, Jim Calvery and Fountain's Volunteer Fire Department.

I only wish Rupert made an appearance...we could all use a Rupey Fix.
