I have a 16 HP Vanguard and suddenly the engine was blowing black smoke when the engine 'missed', so I thought. The plugs were black and a 'friend' suggested adjusting the govenor - huge mistake. I think that the Gov is back to normal but after two plugs, new filters, etc. We got it to run fairly well, but the engine still surges and falls off power in semi tall grass. The engine is 3 years old. Cleaned carb with gumout but still same surging and lack of power. Can anyone help???

sounds like its running rich, not sure on the new ones, does it have mixture screws, try turning the high speed screw inwards a little.

tried my friend and nothing. runs great before i engage the blades and then back to surging and low power.

have you tried adjusting with that running? though be careful with that
