View Full Version : Gas flowing and flowing on Tecumseh 4.5hp
OldManMB 05-16-2005, 04:50 PM Hi,
lawn mower has sat for a few years. Gas flows into the engine all the time.
I replaced the needle and seat, cleaned the carb (with a can of cleaner) although it looked really clean to begin with. When the carb is off and upside down I cannot blow into the gas line which tells me the needle and seat are positioned correctly. However once connected the gas just flows and floods the engine. The float seems OK (there are no holes in it) and it moves freely.
I would appreciate any trouble shooting hints. Thanks.
bbnissan 05-16-2005, 06:42 PM Check the pivot pin for the float and make sure it isn't binding up. Personally, I like to give the pivot pin a little shot of penetrating lube before I put it in to make sure it operates smoothly. If the pivot isn't sticking and it's a metal float, you may need to rebend the little tab that holds the needle so that the float is perfectly level when the needle is seated.
OldManMB 05-16-2005, 07:07 PM Yes, I forgot to mention I had already adjusted the float per the manual. The pin seems to move smoothly as well. What other circuit(s) are in these type of carbs that could be causing the flooding?
bugman 05-16-2005, 08:10 PM the float doesn't feel heavy, and or sink when you place it in water, that sounds more like the problem since if they are bad, (may not look it) but feel heavy, or slosh, or sink in water. its bad and you need a new one. oh and the float pin should be able to go from side to side no problem and no hanging up.
bbnissan 05-16-2005, 08:21 PM Oh yeah...did you put the seat in the right way? If you put it in backwards it will leak like crazy.
OldManMB 05-16-2005, 08:23 PM I think the float is airtight because it does not contain any gas, nor does it bubble when placed under water. The pin is very free (easy to remove). Does the orientation of the bowl matter? ie. it is slightly deeper on one side.
Thanks.
OldManMB 05-16-2005, 08:24 PM Seat was placed in grooves downward. I think I read that in the manual. Sound right??
bugman 05-16-2005, 09:01 PM yeah, grooved side in. so its slightly deeper on one side, i think that should be opposite the gasline hookup. also for the seat, you should lube it a little before you install it, and make sure its all the way in.
asidpara 05-20-2005, 08:30 PM I have 6.75 HP Craftsman and few days ago same thing happened. I installed new seat and needle, tested on bench OK.In my case the bowl with float etc. is attached to the aluminum body with throttle inside. When I attached bowl assembly directly to the tank, it did not leak but the moment I attached to the aluminum body, it started leaking. What I found was that on the side of the al. body thare is a gasket with vent hole. That hole was plugged. After I cleaned it, it stopped leaking. Hope this helps.
asidpara 05-21-2005, 11:58 AM Can you please explain what you mean by 'opposite to gas line' ?
