These titles are from Sony which has recently done several brand new transfers and released them to DVD in 4x3 ONLY. And they reissued several titles in 4x3 only that were previously available in widescreen.

It's a total crapshoot with them.

There was a recent discussion on the home theater forum claiming that this was a deliberate strategic move by Sony marketing to "downgrade" the DVD market to give them a "leg up" in selling blue ray by making their HD format the high-end, OAR format of choice. In other words, many of these new transfers will be 4x3 DVDs and OAR HD blue ray discs.

Is that true? I don't know. I don't usually buy into conspiracy theories. But I can't figure out WHY Sony is doing new HD transfers of widescreen movies and releasing 4x3 discs.

I'm sweating it out until I see the specs.

Trivia: Who knows the name of the planned fifth film that never happened. At the end of THE WRECKING CREW, "Matt Helm will return in ___________" appears on screen.
