View Full Version : McCullough's "Outdoor" & "Indoor" Off Road!!!
glitcher 04-22-2005, 03:54 PM Welcome to the new thread.
The last one was 9 pages long, and did not mention the outdoor track.
Be sure to visit the web sight for all updates, photo's and schedule's.
Since there is an indoor track there will not be any rainouts!
However,if it is raining, the indoor track can only host electric racing at this time.
When you show up at the track and we've desided to race indoors due to weather, there will be a sign posted at the entrance to the outdoor track.
The building is just 400 feet up the road.

Biggins 04-22-2005, 11:45 PM racing will still start at 1:00 tomorrow
aljones 05-04-2005, 10:39 AM I don't wanna jinx anything, but it looks like we may actually have some sunshine this Saturday!! That means we take the racing outside. This Saturday (May 7) will be the first weekend of the normal summer schedule. That means racing starts at 4PM.
It is also the start of the summer point series for all nitro and electric classes.
I hear a rumor that Ben has finished all the custom machining on his antique 1/8 scale and may actually show up this weekend. I wonder if Dietz ever charged his receiver pack? Hope to see you guys this weekend! :)
Torinogt1971 05-04-2005, 04:32 PM Al-Providing mother nature does not rain on my parade, I will be there. Is there any room in the "B" for my antique buggy? How about a fuel man? Is Biggins available for the job?
Dietz 05-04-2005, 10:04 PM Al, I did get a reciever pack, so hopefully I'll be able to qualify this time. I'm anxious to run it again after a few changes. See you Sat.
aljones 05-04-2005, 11:06 PM Ben - don't worry, I'll be sure to save you a spot in the B with me. :) you'll have to ask Bob about being a pit man, something tells me he's going to be busy ;)
Frank - I've made some changes too... getting close on the setup, but it still needs a little work. We should have a good turnout again in the 1/8 scale class this weekend.
Torinogt1971 05-05-2005, 10:15 AM What does it take to provoke a post from Bob?
glitcher 05-05-2005, 05:24 PM Mention something about food,or how good the Losi's are doing.
Biggins 05-05-2005, 05:45 PM
glitcher 05-05-2005, 05:58 PM Works every time.
aljones 05-06-2005, 11:27 AM Bob is more of a lurker than a poster :)
HookupsXXX4 05-12-2005, 11:11 PM Hey guys,
Just want to say real quick that I hear that you guys have a nice place over there. I might make the trip some day.
Jerry
aljones 05-16-2005, 08:17 PM Jerry - hope to see you sometime soon!
Weatherman is calling for sun on Saturday! Reminder sign ups close at 3:30, racing starts at 4pm.
RcDinge 05-17-2005, 09:10 AM Mike Rooney from Steel City said there is non timed RC racing at the south hills bible chapel in mcmurray this saturday. This is like a big fair.
SCH built an off-road track which is pretty impressive.
I think it is a huge car show that includes RC stuff that will be supported by SCH and AB Charles. I think Traxxas provided some RC cars to try out for free. There will be giveaways.
It is free from what I understand and a one day event this coming saturday. I am not sure of the whole jist, but this may be a chairity event in some ways. Mike R said you can bring your own RC cars. Nitro Mike may know more details as he is running the RC fair side while Mike R runs the oval regionals at the shop. www.steelcityhobbies.com has more info.
aljones 05-23-2005, 10:26 AM thanks to everybody that turned out for Saturday's racing. 10 heats of racers... made for a long night with 3 rounds of qualifying, but it was a good time.
A new layout will be in place for Thursday night's practice session and racing this coming weekend. I was there for a few hours yesterday and so far it looks like a lot of fun. Killer rythym section that goes triple-double-double-table top-double. Your car will spend a lot of time in the air on this layout! :)
dsmperformance 05-24-2005, 01:01 PM Any word or pics of the new track layout?
aljones 05-24-2005, 02:28 PM Layout should be finished by Thursday night's practice session. Unfortunately the rain ended Sunday's work day a little early so I didn't get the camera out. I'll take some pics of the new layout on Saturday and post them in the McCullough's Offroad forum. Better yet, come racing this weekend and check it out for yourself :)
Jo jo FRY 05-24-2005, 04:59 PM I was there for the money race a few months back .. I was wondering if you guys are gonna run inside if its raining this weekend? Oh and what day do you run on saturday and what time ?.. Thanks joe
glitcher 05-24-2005, 09:25 PM If it rains there will be electric only indoors.
Sign ups close at 3:30,racing at 4:00.No gas engines before 10am.
And Saturday is race day.
http://www.mcculloughs-offroad.com/
aljones 05-24-2005, 09:31 PM Joe - The electric classes will run inside if there is rain, the nitro classes however are out of luck in the event of bad weather since there isn't adequate ventilation indoors. So far the weather looks promising for Saturday. Sign ups close at 3:30, racing starts at 4PM. Track is open all day for practice. Guys usually start showing up early, I got there a little after 10am last weekend and there were already people on the track. Depending on the number of entries, we'll either run 2 or 3 rounds of quals and a main. Hope to see you soon!
aljones 05-24-2005, 09:32 PM LOL - Tom beat me to the answer. First time he's ever beat me ;)
glitcher 05-24-2005, 09:43 PM Your to scared to run in my classes!
You were there at 10am!? I guess you just didn't go to sleep! :dude:
Probably be back to the track on june 4th.
Any pictures of the new layout?
aljones 05-25-2005, 09:50 AM yeah... I had some work to do on my 1/8 scale, so I got up with the roosters... trust me when I say that rarely happens :)
I won't be at the track until Saturday, so I'll try to take some pics then. There is one little sneak preview from the track build... look in my section of the McCulloughs forum.
aljones 05-26-2005, 12:24 PM I should mention...
Racers, this weekend is the annual McCullough's Memorial Day Weekend Gas Truck Giveaway. All entries are qualified to win a new kit to be raffled off on Saturday night. (if you win you can also choose an electric vehicle if you prefer).
Also, coming up on Sunday June 5th is the 5th Annual Spring Gas Challenge cash race...
glitcher 05-26-2005, 05:54 PM Is there racing on the 4th?
According to the schedule there is.
aljones 05-26-2005, 09:55 PM Tom - yes, the normal club race will be on Saturday the 4th with gas and electric, then Sunday the 5th is the nitro only event.
glitcher 06-01-2005, 08:08 PM The annual EAST COAST RACE AGAINST CANCER!!!!
Sept.9th-11th.
Date has been bumped from late August so some of the Pro racers that enjoy the event can attend.
Keep an eye on the web sight for more details.(Go to the racers forum).

rctazmanmc 06-06-2005, 02:04 PM Can someone fill me in on what the Big Buck Race is and how it is handled?
A few of us from The West - Ohio are planning on coming out for that race and the cancer race and would like to know about it.
Thanks
mc
aljones 06-06-2005, 03:16 PM mc - the big buck race is a cash race with a 50% payback. Entry fees are $30 a class and the payback for each class depends on the total number of entries in that class. (more entries, more money paid back)
The weekend is setup with Friday being an open practice day. I believe Saturday will be 3 rounds of qualifying, Sunday will be 1 round of quals then the mains. Points qualifying is used to determine mains (best 2 out of 4 rounds). In years past, mod electric classes have run triple A mains. I don't think that has changed for this year, but am not entirely sure. Nitro classes will also run extended A mains... I believe 30 minutes. Classes include: stock/mod buggy, stock/mod truck, 4wd mod, 1/8 scale, Gas Truck, and Monster Truck.
The facility is a typical outdoor track. Electric is provided, but bring your own extension cords. You'll also need pit tables, chairs, and shade. There is a hobby shop onsite.
Hope that helps! :)
rctazmanmc 06-06-2005, 03:26 PM That information helps greatly.
We are looking forward to coming out there and racing. Might take a weekend in the next few and come out and run to get a feel for the track and the people.
We just have to find a big race to goto in August but we are trying to get one here at the track we are at so maybe some of your guys can come out here. Will keep you posted.
Running the Indiana Indoor Off-road Champs this weekend - can not wait!
Thanks again
mc
EAGLECLAW 06-06-2005, 05:21 PM What type rear tires are the best for that track? Is the track dry and dusty or is there pretty good traction.
aljones 06-06-2005, 10:02 PM MC - definately come out and join us... you'll have a good time. Bring your A game because there are some fast dudes that race here! :) I was actually up at Medina last weekend with my 1/8 scale, we had a great time. Probably won't be too hard to convince us to come back for a big race.
eagleclaw - the track depends alot on the weather. We sweep, water, and groom between rounds and the track holds together very well. It's a mix of hardpacked topsoil and river clay, so the traction is decent. During the day Red compound Losi tires or M3 prolines work (anything from taper pins and evil twins to Xs or Holeshots depending on the amount of dust). This past weekend we had a nitro race with 45 minute A mains and the track actually got very hard and bluegrooved.... traction was sick, but that's not typical for an average club race. In the evening the track changes a little bit because of the moisture in the ground. The surface actually becomes very simular to CRCRC, so you can bust out the pink taper pins or R3 compound tires.
Jo jo FRY 06-09-2005, 05:03 PM Hey al.. You defently need to go to medina again ..When is the electric race gonna happen? Hey stoffer Is it ok if i drive on the track backwards? Yea i know i need to ditch the sissy electric crap and drive 1/8 scale .. But hey its easier to win when Dietz is running gas!
aljones 06-10-2005, 09:54 AM Jo Jo - the weekend of July 9-10 is the Big Buck race... it's a combined electric & gas race. Same deal with the East Coast Race Against Cancer which will be in September.
and I'll defibately come back to Medina... loved the layout. Just gotta make sure that guys are going the right direction on the straightaway :)
rctazmanmc 06-13-2005, 11:09 AM Yeah -definately come back!
Trying to organize something for August out here.
Went to RC Planet for the inddor champs this past weekend and that was a bust - 30+ guys showed Saturday for stock truck and buggy combined - 2 years ago there was about 100 or so at the race and AE was there
I blew $150 for the whole weekend and did not even get a shirt or ribbon out of the whole thing.
Looking forward to coming out there though!!!!!!
mc
aljones 06-13-2005, 04:28 PM Seems like turnouts are down a little everywhere this summer, hopefully things will pick up a little bit. I know last weekend was the IFMAR world's warm up race in Italy and many of the Associated A team guys were there. It's getting hard to schedule races without conflicting with another event somewhere else... even on the other side of the planet.
The turnout for the Big Buck race is usually average... I think we had maybe 50-60 entries last year, but it is a very competitive race and a good time. The Race Against Cancer is also a very fun race. Entry fees are kept relatively low and all pre-entries get a free t-shirt. Lots of pros show up. Last year Dave Montgomery, Mike Truhe, Jesse Robbers, were all there. Plus, we sell tickets to raise money for the charity and give away tons of door raffle prizes. You should try to make both!
JJ MBX-5 06-13-2005, 08:09 PM Hey Slow Fry how is it going?
I hope to get out to Medina next month and show you what a B4 and T4 can do! ;) I hope to see you guys come over to PA from racing. The competion is stiff I will warn you. Hope to see at a track some where.
Jo jo FRY 06-27-2005, 12:10 PM Hey al the race july 9 10 11 is electric all 3 days ?
aljones 06-27-2005, 10:07 PM Jo jo - yes, both classes run on Saturday and Sunday.
glitcher 09-17-2005, 07:10 AM The big race was a success!
$4000 raised towards the fight against cancer.
A great time had by all.
Now we can get back to the old grind.Here is a link to the schedule;

aljones 09-28-2005, 12:48 PM Just a reminder...
Racers this Saturday will be the normal club racing program at McCulloughs with electric and nitro classes. The Fall points series has started with over $700 in prizes to be awarded. Don't miss out!
Also... nitro racers, don't miss the annual Fall Gas Challenge this Sunday at McCulloughs! $30 per class with 50% cash payout. The last big nitro shootout before the outdoor season ends. 1/8 scale, Gas Truck, and Monster Truck with 45 minute A-mains. Since the Steelers have a bye week this Sunday, come on out and race :)
www.mcculloughs-offroad.com for more details...
RCBOYZ 09-29-2005, 10:01 AM Do you guys allow 1/8 buggy to run .28 motors. Still running the motor that came with my Jammin RTR. Also, what is a good tire combo at McCulloughs? What time do the gates open? Interested in coming to the Fall Gas Challenge.
Thanks,
Mike
aljones 09-29-2005, 10:41 AM Mike - The .28 motor from your RTR will be fine. Gates open early, but Doug prefers that you wait until at least 10am before you fire up the nitro engines. The racing starts at noon.
For 1/8 scale tires, most guys prefer Panther Komodo II's in soft compound. M2 Crime fighters are also OK, but for some reason the Panthers seem to hook up better.
It might not be a bad idea to have a set of Panther C Compound switches or Proline Inside Jobs mounted up just in case the track is damp, but most everyone uses the tires listed above when the track is dry.
aljones 10-06-2005, 03:35 PM the fall points series continues this Saturday night. Over $700 worth of prizes to be awarded at the end of the month.
and yes... I finally have a day off work and can't wait to fire up my new Kyosho SP2!
d4man 10-07-2005, 11:22 AM You might have to wait another week, with the way this weather is looking  :freak: :drunk:
aljones 10-07-2005, 05:09 PM I know! :(
hopefully it will dry up a little... we may get racing in afterall.
dsmperformance 10-07-2005, 08:10 PM This may prompt some work on the indoor track to get it ready to roll...
Al,
Do you run electric at all? Will you be indoors this winter?
aljones 10-08-2005, 06:38 PM I raced mod buggy last season, but since have sold all of my batteries and buggy. I still have an ESC and my chargers, lathe, etc. I am considering getting a truck for this season... or maybe a 4wd if the class takes off this year. I'd hate to spend all that cash on a 4wd and not have enough there to make a class of it.
With working my extra job, I haven't had a lot of time to race. Hopefully I'll be able to pop in on Saturdays thoughout the season. Plus, I've been involved with bringing the RC Pro Series race in, so I'll be around to help out with that.
Bummer that we didn't get to run today... I was looking forward to firing up the 1/8 scale.
