The second event of the MAHORA season was held April 17th in W-S, NC. The track is 27' by 5' with a lap length of 107 feet. The track is designed with long straights and sweeping(big radius) turns. The backstretch is 24 feet long. Each driver got five laps to set their quickest time. Here are the qualifying times. In the M/T-X/T:

We started with the M/T-X/T race first. Each driver got three minutes per lane. Notable lap totals for the outside (red) lane: Lewis 16, Kacie, Ernesto, 15. The next lane towards the inside is blue. Bob T and Ernesto had 16, Dave had 15. The next lane to the inside is white, Bob T, Ernesto, and Dave each had 15 laps. The inside (yellow) lane high lap totals were Kacie, Bob T., and Ernesto each had 15 laps. Here are the final results and each driver's points for this event:

Interesting notes: Total race time was 12 minutes. First to last was only 9 laps. Ernesto averaged 9.06 FPS(feet per second). Bob T. averaged 8.92 FPS. Kacie averaged 8.32 FPS. Andrew who finished with the lowest lap total still averaged 7.72 FPS. This event was the first time Ernesto, Kacie, and Dave had raced on this layout.
After a break to eat hamburgers and hot dogs prepared by John Nicola we got to racing the "Box Stock" class. Lisa Ripperton entered this event though she had vitually no practice time. Each driver ran four minutes in each lane. Here are some of the notable lap totals for each lane. Bob T., Lewis, Andrew, and Kacie each turned 26 laps in the red lane. In the blue lane Bob T. turned 29 laps, Lisa, Dave, and Lewis ran 27 laps. In the white lane Andrew and Ernesto (Little E) each had 28 laps. Lewis has 27 laps. In the yellow lane Dave had 29 laps. Bob T, Kacie, and Little E. each had 28 laps. Here are the final results and each driver's points for this event:

Interesting notes. Total race time was 16 minutes. First to last was only 8 laps. Bob T. averaged 12.14 FPS. Lewis averaged 11.92 FPS. Kacie averaged 11.81 FPS. Lisa, though she finished last, averaged 11.26 FPS. She started in the outside (red) lane and had FOUR crashes on the first lap!!! She then setled down and ran lap totals of 23, 27, 25, and 26. Top finisher Bob T.'s lap totals were 26, 29, 26, and 28.

Bob, thanks for posting the race results. I was scratching my head about why you were posting the average velocity numbers - but it's kind of cool to play with numbers.

More fun with numbers...

At 109 laps your winning driver piloted the car 11663 ft which is 2.2 actual miles, which equates to 141.4 scale miles at 1:64 scale. In my weekly races the winner usually averages about 80 scale miles during qualifying trials and about 250 scale miles in the main. That's what makes HO slot car racing so exciting. Where else can you take in a 250 mile race after work on a weeknight?

The fact that you're averaging 528 scale mph is something we'll just put into the "it's only a model, not reality" category. But the fun is very real.

There is an interesting lesson to be learned from the numbers: the difference between winning and coming in 4th and missing the podium can be extremely small, only 7.8% in your NASCAR race. All those tiny little fractional improvements that you can put into your setup and driving techniques really DO make a difference.
