All the gossipy fanboy movie sites have parrotted this story but none have mentioned "Deep Impact".
Anyhoo, with Sommers cracking the whip expect a jokey, popcorny crowd pleaser about the end of the world.
I'm crossing my fingers that he'll manage to shoehorn in some dodgey CGI Martians.

"Deep Impact" was originally intended to be a direct remake of "When Worlds Collide." For reasons both creative and budgetary the producers elected to dial down the spectacle, focusing on the relationships rather than the spaceships (this might have been a good idea had the characters been more interesting). Given Sommers's past efforts I think it's safe to say we're in store for a big, dumb end-of-the-world flick with lots of lame dialogue and cheesy CGI. At one point this might have been enough for me, but now it just makes me sleepy. Guess I'm getting old...

Getting older does have it's advantages.:)

Wish the industry would turn some of this talent on some other works like Heinlien's novels, Ringworld, etc. I have to wonder if these "producers" even know if there is a written sci-fi world out there just aching to be put to film or miniseries. Seems they just keep making the same movies over and over with all of these remakes. I think it's a disadvantage to get old as almost nothing is new anymore. The last miniseries or film I really enjoyed was DUNE, but even that was a re-make
