This has nothing to do with models, but a buddy of mine here at work has acepted a job in the Cayman Islands and was wondering what DVD region that is. He has a collection of Region 1 DVDs right now and plans to take his current DVD player just to be sure.

My own quick research suggests that the Caymans is DVD Region 4. Does anyone know for certain?

I'll bet Brent knows! ;)

Yes. Every indication is that the Cayman Islands are Region 4.

And that brief reply is historic. After years of using the worlds most laughingly obsolete computer (seriously, it's from 1996), this is the very first thing posted on my very first internet connection with my new 3 GHz Pentium IV Gateway 504 GR with a dual layer DVD burner, 200GB hard drive, 3 firewire, 7 USB ports etc + 17" LCD NEC Multisync flat screen monitor (previously used 12" CRT!). I've actually moved into the 20 th century.*

*But don't send me big email attachments...I'm haven't configured this system yet and I'm still taking mail on the old 'puter :).

I would think the more important question would be
"are they NTSC?"
Region codes can be hacked on players, but it has to be a compatible format.

I've just returned from Europe where you can get multi-region DVD players and multi-format TVs. I would think that you could get them almost everywhere except the US and Canada where the MPAA has too much control over how we watch movies. :(

You guys can't get multi-zone players?! I'd be lost without mine - we couldn't get Buckaroo Banzai on zone 4 down here so I had to get a zone 1 disc. Same thing with the Ewok's double feature disc... damn, did I say that last bit out loud?

The only region free, PAL/NTSC players I've found in the U.S need to be hacked. Don't come that way out of the box. There is a website that lists the hack for just about every player made. If you're lucky you can do it with remote control commands, others you have to open the player. I've seen some where you download a remote control hack to dvd disc, put disc in player, and a menu comes up allowing you to change the setting with the remote.

If you have an X-BOX they can be hacked to download and store games. A guy at work rents games, downloads ther game into the player and tales the game back. He has around 15 or so games games stored. Just pulls up a menu, chooses a game and it plays.

You also have to have a multi-format DVD player.
Most players here in the states only handle NTSC, so even if you hack the region, you still can't play PAL discs.

For some reason, most of the players that can handle PAL seam to be the cheap low-end ones. I know my APEX can handle both formats, even though I haven't bothered hacking the region code yet.

I've never seen a DVD player that couldn't do both. They won't CONVERT PAL to NTSC, but they'll pass both kinds of signals, and most PAL regions are multistandard TVs

There is a WEBSite called AFTERDAWN.COM. It has all the answers/links one would be looking for in reguards to DVD/VCD/CD.

All DVD players have the same abilities to read and display PAL/NTSC. It's the code in the ROM which changes what is read/played. Alot of the players are just converted computer DVD drives.
