View Full Version : Which motor for which vehicle?

I race different classes. On-road I race oval and touring sedans. Off-road I have a truck and a dirt oval. I generally buy a stock motor, tweak it, run it a few times to determine gearing and then proceed to wear it out. When it's used up I get another; whatever the hobby shop at that location has in stock. But is a particular stock motor better suited for different situations? i.e. Monster Stock, Green Machine, P2K, P2K2, etc. Maybe one is better for the on and off the throttle more so than another (more torque), and maybe one is better for WOT (RPM)? Any thoughts or recommendations?

Thanks,

Which one(s) are you calling "roar stock" since they are all ROAR legal stock motors?

In the past I would use a YoKomo based stock for offroad when track became loose and loomy, Epic for hard packed high bite that would hold that power without causing a lot of wheelspin. Another method was to used gearing or setup like lower silver brushes, altering the spring tension etc to tailor motor power to track conditions. Then there are stock motors that seem ideal for a certain track and will be more widely used. Best information on which motor is used is ask the guys that are doing well, also ask them what they use for a hot setup and specific things (gearing, chassis setup, etc) that make them fast.

Which one(s) are you calling "roar stock" since they are all ROAR legal stock motors? Epic "Roar Stock" is a Epic Binary 2 thats has 2 magnets instead of 4 magnets but still has the same armature to make it roar legal, And no not "ALL" stock motors are roar Legal Most are though Like the Epic binary 2 is not roar legal.

So now the Monster is called a 'torque' motor... wow... how far we've come.

I don't race nothing but 4 cell oval... so my opion on this may not mean much. However my overall feeling is that if a motor is good for one type of racing, then it's probably good for just about anytype of racing as long as you get the gearing right...

Torque/RPM... it all gets worked out in the gears choosen. The Monster is a good choice and so are the EPIC 'Roar stock' motors... From what I've heard, the EPIC 'ROAR stock' is likely to be slightly better... I'd be hard pressed to call either one a torque motor... Not sure there's been a torque motor since... well since the P2K or so...

For the offroad Fantom has been building P2K2 motors for the MARS series and there great for truck offroad. Though I don't think they sell them other than as a handout motor to large batch orders. I agree with DynoMoHum, there are few "torque" motors out right now that are ROAR leagle. Gearing a Monster for truck offroad still leaves it very soft on the low end. The CRCRC Winter Champs used a Monster handout and it was fine for that track with it a hard clay track and lots of room to get to the top end. The EPIC is better of the two, still I snap up the Fantom P2K2 at the MARS series to carry me for the year just so I have a strong motor for truck stock. Most stock motors have gone to RPM for on road and 4 cell, leaving us trucks to struggle with them.

For dirt I have always heard - Epic P2K, Epic P2K2, Reedy MVP, Peak Hellfire, Orion Core, maybe even Monster if long sweeping track.

For Sedan or 1/12 onroad - Monster

For Oval - Monster or Epic Roar Stock
