View Full Version : pulling oil
bdunegan 03-31-2005, 12:10 PM 11hp b&s pulling oil into carb. changed valve breather, took out dipstick and put filler plug in, not overfilled. when idling runs fine, then when sped up, can actually see oil pulling into carb. valves seem to be working fine, but havent pulled head yet. can blown head gasket cause this, or is the valves messed up? not ohv engine.
bugman 03-31-2005, 02:35 PM so its oil coming in, not a smoke sort of thing. hmmm have you smelled of the oil lately. could be it is overfull, just with gas. about how old is it?
bdunegan 03-31-2005, 03:06 PM oil doesnt seem to have any gas odor, and you can see the breather tube where it hooks to carb, and actually see oil coming in. it idles fine, but when sped up, really comes in just rebuilt carb, and it dont seem to be flooding. oil does not check overfull. motor(unsure how old) had been setting about two years. had points. i changed to magnetron.engine was supposed to be stuck, so while taking bottom pulley off, engine rolled pretty stiff at first, then freed right up. i changed ign, rebuilt carb, changed oil, and valve breather. put batt in, cranked about dozen times and fired right up. it runs and idles good, but when sped up, floods carb with oil. next step is to pull head and check gasket. did not even smoke when first started.
bugman 03-31-2005, 04:07 PM hmmm, weird, so you replaced it with a brand new one?, unless the new one was defective it all sounds like its doing alright, but yeah check for head gasket leaks. gets good compression right?? just to make sure on that since you say you freed the engine up?
bdunegan 03-31-2005, 07:55 PM took head off, and gasket was fine, however cylinder is toast. it looks like something come loose all the way around and scarred cylinder bad. it would have to be rebored probably .60 to even clean up. just parked it in the bone yard and moved another one up to play with. this one is an old sears LT-8-36 with a tecumseh 8hp on it. the body is bigger than my wh c-165, and it is a chain drive 4 speed. anyone know about tecumseh engines? thanks for all the replies. i will keep posting on progress cause i am sure i will need help.
bugman 03-31-2005, 08:32 PM yeah i know "to-sucky" engines, not worth the trouble, now you see the briggs was toast ans still ran...... right. all i have to say if you have the time a tec is well very testy. all the parts off the 11hp engine you should save, you know good parts, the breather if its still good, head and carb etc. you can get some good money for the carb. oh and they can't be bored to .60 though, .30 yeah but aghhh the person before must've ran it low on oil. i tell everybody i know, always check the oil, i have another tendency to smell the oil and well i've saved a couple engines by just smelling the oil. which they both had gas in the oil
