I have a HP Pavilion pent. 2, running windows 98. I was using Norton System Works 2003 and wanted tp Upgraded to Norton systom works 2005. After I deinstalled some games and works 2003 I upgraded my moniter to a 17" and my printer from a HP 722 to a HP PSC 750. I dinstalled the 722 software ad installed the 750 software. Then I loaded the Works 2005 software. Since I have done all this My computer is locking up when start up is all most finished. It takes sometimes 20 trys to get it to start up. When I tried to run a scandisk or a defrag it will never get past 1 or 2 percent complete. I even let it go for 30 hours hoping it will finish. it never did. I am also having intermittent problems loging on to my Netzero dial up service. As long as I never turn off the computer once I get on, every thing works OK. But I still can't do scan disk or the defrag.
Can any one help me?
Thanks
Bill

Try unistalling Norton and see what happens... Norton can be picky.

yes norton can also be a system resources hog and not do such a good job at virus scanning, i've actually seen avg by grisoft, they have a free one out for home use on one computer. it actually updates very regularly, scans while its booting up and it doesn't take resources and i've heard and seen by some of my friends i told to use it, got some viruses that norton would not. not saying get it but if you want to go that route but its pretty good.

first thing you should try is takin off nortan. try Avast. its free and updates great! also go to "run" and type in "msconfig" go to startup and make sure eveyrthing that is starting up with the computer is absolutly needed. anything extra i would un-check. this will probly fix your problems. if you cant get the computer to start long enough to do all this maybe try pressing "F8" right as you start up your pc. let it get to a point where it asks if you wanna do safemode. sometimes that will help you get on the pc to fix some stuff. hope some of that helps!
