View Full Version : Wild One Thunderjet queston.
A/FX Nut 03-22-2005, 10:19 PM I recently bought a yellow Thunderjet Cougar from Bob's Hobby Shop in Michigan. When I got it home I found what appeared to be a Wild One chassis mounted to it. The armature ohmed at 6.0 and has Green wire with Gray lamanates. The sticker that has HONG KONG printed on it also has the number 1416 printed on it also. The pickups are silver plated and the brushes are silver. All four rims are for the skinny tires. Did these chassis come with four skinny foam tires or two skinny foam tires on the rear? Randy.
I think the foamies only came on the rears.
roadrner 03-22-2005, 11:03 PM Foams on the backside only from Aurora. I remember getting my first wild ones or Tuff ones back in the day and couldn't believe the difference between those sponge tires and stock rubber ones of regular Tjets. What was silicone back then, heck we had sponge. ;) rr

dlw/RR are dead on the money.....and at one point you actually got the foam tires in addition to the regular rubber tires all in the same little two piece clear plastic case.

PS.
Bet your little sticker had red writting on it, not black!?!

John, you are right about the red writting on the sticker. This chassis I have didn't have any foam tires on it. Another question that I have is; What color are the magnets supposed to be? Mine are white and green. I'm really grateful for your responses. Randy.
roadrner 03-23-2005, 10:31 PM That's one I can't remember. rr
Slott V 03-24-2005, 03:04 PM Bob's in Watervliet MI? That's a great old hobby shop! Love digging through all his stuff and train watching. You could spend a whole day there. Great smelly old hobby shop. :dude:
A/FX Nut 03-25-2005, 09:37 PM Bob has done some changing of the store. When you walk in the front and go to where the stairs go up and the other goes down, in the lower level he took the train layout out. Now there is counters with slot car related items and other items to buy. He had an Aurora Model Motoring race set for sale. I didn't ask a price. Randy.
kevin5797 04-21-2005, 04:59 PM Hey all, Bob also had a bunch of NOS wild ones chassis with the red and green tuff ones arms, they had black and black stripe magnets and stock t-jet gearing, but they all had hard rubber tires,...sorry I bought them all, Kevin
AfxToo 04-21-2005, 08:59 PM Be careful with those low resistance arms in stock TJets. If you smell anything or sense that the car is slowing down - get it off the track immediately.

Your definitly on the money there AFX TOO, I have a couple of Tuff Ones chassis that will smoke as soon as you put them on the track and apply the power to them. I'll hold the rear tires off of the track and give it the gas and wisp of smoke come out. I'll take the car apart and cant find out why it smokes. The only idea I have is too much brush tension on the com plate. Do you have any ideas? Randy
AfxToo 04-23-2005, 01:48 PM If you have smoke it may already be too late. Something is burning, probably the insulation on the windings. Do everything you can to reduce the friction in the drivetrain and try reducing brush tension a little or using the domed JLTO brushes (which have less friction). That arm is probably a goner.
I'm also not a big fan of silver brushes for runners because they make the comm dirty faster. Aftermarket carbon copper brushes are better for regular use.
In general, when you run a low resistance arm you need to put in stronger magnets. Contrary to what you may think, stronger magnets (up to a point) make a pancake arm run cooler. I'd use the JLTO or Super II magnets with the 6 ohm Wild Ones and red/green TuffOnes arms.
mtyoder 04-23-2005, 03:51 PM Add oil. Lots and lots of oil. Especially on the brushes and com. plate. Or better yet hot sauce or maybe beer. How about sand and dirt. Just kidding!
noddaz 04-25-2005, 08:23 PM You have to watch the Wild Ones arms...
I was going through a bunch of arms for racing. I was sorting them by how "fast" they sounded on the test bench. Found a grey lam arm that sounded fast so I put it in a chassis to race. I was busted for an illegal arm at a MARS race in Virginia...
That's what I get for not checking what ohms the arm was....
(Dang... That car was fast too..)

A/FX Nut 04-26-2005, 07:49 PM Scott, I'm going to ask a very stupid question. When did they take your car apart? Before or after the race? :freak:
