Zorro 03-17-2005, 07:22 PM The Incredibles - in a word, Incredible!
Pink Flamingos - in several words, one the most vile, stupid and repulsive films ever made. And I'm pleased as punch to have it in my collection.
Do The Right Thing: The Criterion Collection - Spike Lee's masterpiece was released 15 years ago. Watching it again after suffering through Spike's more recent work reinforces what an original, vital, alive movie "Do The Right Thing" was and is. If Spike gets hit by a car tomorrow, he will die knowing he made one truly great film.
.... so, what's on everybody else's list?

PhilipMarlowe 03-17-2005, 07:57 PM Deadwood Season 1 Boxset- HBO's cult western looks and sounds great, commentaries are a mixed bag, I coulda went for more Keith Carradine and Ian McShane. The doc on the real Deadwood history is pretty good. The wife got me this for Valentines Day, I think I'll keep her. Folks without HBO should definately check it out, if for nothing else than spotting every decent character actor from the eighties and nineties. From William Sanderson to Powers Booth to Peter Coyote to Alice Krige, they just keep coming and coming. Not to mention all the ones whose faces but not names I know, like the redneck bartender Eddie Murphy faces down in the original "48 Hours".
Dream On Season 1 & 2- More from HBO, Dream On had it's moments over it's run. Using clips from classic Universal to illustrate Brian Benben's thoughts was a clever idea, and the language and nudity were pretty novel at the time. Gotta love the guest stars, including Mimi Rogers (in some nice lingerie), David Bowie, Ricardo Montablan, Tom Berenger, etc. Kinda funny to see how tame the "outrageous" TV talk show Martin's buddy Eddie hosted was back then in the pre-Jerry Springer age.
MST3K Volume 6- Rhino gets back on track with 4 great Joel episodes, unlike Vol. 5 which had four BAD Mike episodes. Added cool points for "Attack of the Giant Leeches" with hottie Yvette Vickers frequently undressing, and the weirdly homoerotic "Undersea Kingdom", which confirms what most enlisted guys suspected really went on at Annapolis.
Carson Dyle 03-17-2005, 08:44 PM Folks without HBO should definately check it out, if for nothing else than spotting every decent character actor from the eighties and nineties. From William Sanderson to Powers Booth to Peter Coyote to Alice Krige, they just keep coming and coming.
Don't forget Brad Dourif.
I have the boxed set as well; great stuff.
Brent Gair 03-17-2005, 09:24 PM I finally got around to picking up THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI. It's always claimed to be one of the most important movies ever made and I've felt some guilt about not owning a copy. I've seen the public domain DVDs around but I've just come across the Image version which is considered one of the two "acceptable" DVDs (the other being Kino).
I also recently picked up SHAUN OF THE DEAD which, much to my surprise, actually made me laugh out loud. There are very few comedies which get more than a crooked smile out of me. It may help that my mother was born and raised in England and I can identify with their almost comical attempt to keep a stiff upper lip no matter how dire the situation.
I received my U.S. import copy of SWIMMING POOL. The rip-off Canadian distibutor sells a PAL sourced print at twice the price of the superior U.S. DVD. I'm a Charlotte Rampling fanatic. That's a good thing here because, in the best (worst?) of European film making tradition, this film builds very slowly and I would guess a lot of viewers are drifting into unconciousness after the first 20 minuntes! But Charlotte Rampling keeps my attention and it's worthwhile for people who can make it through the whole movie. This is a film where you have to make it all the way to end before you begin to understand the pay-off. If you can do that, it's a fascinating movie. If you don't pay attention or you don't watch the whole movie, you'll be lost.
Mitchellmania 03-18-2005, 02:34 PM The silent film "the Passion of Joan of Arc" is legues ahead of Caligari I recommend anyone see it the actress is amazing ! And the camerawork and
sets are astonishing! Each frame is perfect composition. Treat yourself and see
it!! I've seen it at least 60 times.

Brent Gair 04-02-2005, 03:26 PM As mentioned in another thread, I got the 1949 BATMAN AND ROBIN serial which is a real hoot. I'm sure the batophiles would be aghast but it's entertaining as all heck. I realize the show didn't have much of a budget but you'd think they could have bought shock absorbers for the "Batmobile". Every time they hit the brakes on that poor old Mercury, the nose dives and the thing bounces for about 2 minutes. Great transfers. Good job Columbia (don't say that too ofen).
More significantly, I finally got APOLLO 13 on DVD. The 2 disc 10th Anniversary Edition was just released. Included is the theatrical cut and the IMAX version.
For a change of pace, I watched the IMAX version. It's just stunning, a real delight. Gorgeous picture and sound. It's also anamorphic widescreen...claimed as 1.66:1 though folks on the net are measuring it at 1.78:1. This is one of those instances where a 2.35 theatrical movie doesn't have to be panned and scammed for a different ratio. Principle photography was done in the Super 35 format which gives the director much more lattitude for extracting images. Ron Howard did the IMAX cut and is very happy with it. I loved it.
Dave Hussey 04-02-2005, 06:07 PM Hey Brent - The Apollo 13 IMAX version has a DTS audio track. I'll have to pick it up - its less than $20 here!
I hear that Batman needs to lose a few pounds though. Just the same, if its a fun disc I'll have to get that too.

rw2516 04-02-2005, 06:59 PM Got the latest batch of Midnight Movies:LAST MAN ON EARTH/PANIC IN YEAR ZERO, VOODOO ISLAND/FOUR SKULLS OF JONATHAN DRAKE, FIREBALL 500/THUNDER ALLEY. These were somewhat of a pain to get ahold of since they weren't released in the U.S. at all. Had to get from Canadian sellers on ebay.
Got a R2 box set of 5 MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. movies and FROM BEYOND which is also R2.
Was at a comic show today and picked up some convention stuff. WITHOUT WARNING(1980) ripped from a official Japanese dvd release. Looks great, nothing special. THE QUESTOR TAPES, haven't stuck it in yet. WEREWOLF the complete series for $15. About what I expected, taped from original network airing and transferred to dvd. Looks like first generation tape source.
Saw a WAR OF THE WORLDS the complete series and passed. Something I really would like, T.H.E. CAT the complete series but the guy want $100, passed. What is THE TOMB OF DRACULA cartoon show?
Brent Gair 04-02-2005, 08:13 PM Hey Brent - The Apollo 13 IMAX version has a DTS audio track. I'll have to pick it up - its less than $20 here!

Yeah...$18.99 at Futureshop and Best Buy here.
This just highlights the incredibly bizarre pricing structure of Sony/Columbia. Columbia is selling old catalogue titles: THE WACKIEST SHIP IN THE ARMY, THE CREEPING FLESH, THE DEVIL COMMANDS and more for $32.99 each...single discs, no extras. On what planet does Columbia think anybody will pay $32.99 for The Wackiest Ship in the Army?
But the BATMAN serial is a reasonable deal. It's still more than most multi-disc sets but it's good for Columbia. Most importantly, the did the transfers right! I don't mind paying a few bucks more for good work.
Griffworks 04-03-2005, 12:17 AM Recent Gits for me from Amazon.com:
The Last Man On Earth - 1964 - Vincent Price is great in this movie, based on the novel "I Am Legend". Classic! The movie isn't necessarily Oscar material, but the plot and acting isn't so bad at all.
Night of the Living Dead - Millenium Edition - 1968 - The movie that brought the Zombie phenomena into modern times - and has kept thousands of children up late at night, boarding up their windows and doors.... The extra's are awesome. Sad to think that Duane Jones is dead, as I've always thought he turned in a first-rate performance.
Night of the Living Dead - 1990 - Tony Todd is awesome as Ben. Patricia Tallman is hot in this! Excellent retelling by Tom Savini - the guy who did the SFX for the original George A Romero treatment!
Now, I've just got to get Day of the Dead. It's not all that great, but I need it to complete the original trilogy. Can't wait for Land of the Dead to finish production and be released!

PhilipMarlowe 04-06-2005, 01:39 PM Real Genius- One of my fave eighties goofy comedys, the DVD is kinda disapointing. No extras except a trailer, kinda odd because Martha Coolidge & Val Kilmer both have done commentaries for worse movies than this one. Good news is it's been remastered and looks & sounds pretty good, first time I've seen it in widescreen(I first caught it at 3AM on skinamax)! The movie holds up ok and I still like Kilmer's brilliant-but-goofy performance.
Last bad news, this version isn't going to bring in any new fans for the flick, it has the absolutely worse DVD cover I've ever seen that reveals nothing about the movie:
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000065U1Q.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
BTW, Griff "Day of the Dead" got the same Divamax treatment "Dawn" got and looks amazing. When I got the DVD it was the first time I had seen it since it's theatrical run, I actually liked it much better the second time!
John P 04-06-2005, 07:30 PM I thought Real Genius was absolutely hysterical - right up to the time Val Kilmer and his buddy committed treason and sabotaged a US government weapon test. I was working for a defense contractor even then, and I didn't see much funny in the act.
But speaking of great 80s films, I just picked up SILVERADO! special edition at Barnes & Noble for $20. looks like it has a ton of extra featurettes, and comes with a deck of Silverado playing cards :freak:. What a great western it is!

Shortly after the MGM/Best Buy mega-screw up became apparent, I ordered all of the titles from Amazon.ca. Of course, by that time, the movies were in short supply and I figured I was out of luck.
I checked my order every day (including today) but there was no movement. SOME would show as being in stock but there was always one or two titles holding up the order.
Anyway, I just an email from Amazon.ca saying all four Midnite Movie discs have shipped!
Let me editorialize by saying that this whole situation is absolutely inexcusable. MGM and Best Buy are two giants in the entertainment business. MGM has a huge library and Best Buy has a huge distribution network. Yet, the two companies together have totally botched the Midnite Movie deal as if they were a pair of dim-witted bumpkins who just set up shop yesterday.
Apparently NOBODY in either organization bothered to tell customers in the U.S. that the release date was in limbo. MGM sent out screeners. Every DVD site listed the March 22 release date. It wasn't until AFTER people discovered the titles were unavailable that the whole mess came to light.
That shows appalling disrespect for paying customers. If you plan to change a release date, tell people about it. And don't change the release date an hour before the titles are supposed to go on sale!
tripdeer 04-14-2005, 02:27 AM Picked up Sideways the other day. Pretty funny little movie!
John P 04-14-2005, 08:05 AM We watched Silverado on Saturday night. Goddamn, what a great movie that was. Whatever happened to Lawrence Kasdan? He wrote some of the great iconic films of the 80s - Body heat, Silverado, Empire Strikes Back, Raiders, Big Chill - and nothing that rang my chimes afterward.

PhilipMarlowe 04-14-2005, 02:02 PM Treasure Of Sierra Madre 2 disc SE- The remastered print is a thing of beauty, and the extra's are among the best on any DVD I've bought. I particularly like the "Warner Brothers Night at the Movies" feature, you get the actual trailer (for "Key Largo"), Bugs Bunny cartoons, newsreel, and comedy short that played with "Treasure" on it's theatrical premiere! The documentaries on John Houston and "Making of Treasure of Sierra Madre" are well done too. I still have the radio version of "Treasure" (with Bogart and Walter Huston reprising their roles) and the commentary to listen to yet!

sbaxter 04-14-2005, 05:22 PM Treasure Of Sierra Madre 2 disc SE [SNIP] Bugs Bunny cartoons
Doesn't that come with one of the cartoons that features Bugs Bunny with the little penguin? I think there were two of those made, and this is the one where Bugs takes the "pen-gew-in" back to the South Pole, only to discover that he's from Hoboken. Features a caricature of Bogart who shows up two or three times in the short.

Yep, "8 Ball Bunny" (I used to know a gal in the eighties with that nickname, for reasons I won't go into here  ) is the one with the penguin and the Bogart/Dobbs parody. The other is "Hot Crossed Bunny" and features Bugs imitating Lionel Barrymore's "Key Largo" performance right down to the wheelchair. Sadly, neither has been cleaned up and remastered as good as "Carrotblanca" on the "Casablanca" DVD, though they're perfectly serviceable and watchable.
After listening to Robert Mitchum narrate the special on Huston, I sure wish the big lug had done a few commentaries before he shuffled off the mortal coil.

Think you are being a lil' cynical there, I'm sure Blake was framed, probably by someone who forked over $8.50 to see "Lost Highway".

Make sure you watch out for Nick Nolte as a uncredited hippie extra, I think it was his first movie. Most members of the musical group "Chicago" are in there too.

It wasn't an act of treason. It was a demostration of a civilain use of the star wars technology!
The method of "hacking" they show is used as an example by security consultant firms to show that a better lock is sometimes all that is needed to safe guard one's infomation systems.
John P 04-15-2005, 10:09 PM Sorry, it was sabotage of a military weapons test followed by the use of a deadly weapon for personal revenge and an act of, at the very least, large-scale vandalism, in the destruction of a private home. But I'm sure all the anti-military, anti-government liberal college kids the movei was aimed at thought it was "the right thing to do."
uh-uh.
What hell did Kilmer's character think the 10-megawatt laser he was developing was gonna be used for? Pink Floyd shows?

Playing pranks on the evil dean is a time honored college tradition, didn't you ever see Animal House? Or see how disapointed Homer Simpson was when he returned to college, and discovered to his horror the "evil dean" turned out to be a hacky-sack-playing-mellow dude who liked to jam with the students?
'Sides, the guy had it coming!
John P 04-16-2005, 07:52 PM Yah, that'll work in court. It's okay that you destroyed your teacher's house with an illegally appropriated B-1 bomber and a new experimental 10 MW death laser, because he was a disagreeable guy who didn't mention his laser research was secretly funded by the military.

Bergman awes me incredibly. His films are so deep, quiet and dark but so damn riveting. Cries and Whispers had me on the edge the whole time-and the twist in the film almost gave me a heart attack. The heated Mother Daughter exchange in Autumn Sonata was pure soul-some of the best ever laid down on cell. (Ingrid had cancer during the filming) I really need to experience them all. I also need to study Cassavetes and Fassbinder. The Criterion Forum has real film experts like this board has real modeling experts. (I think I have about 100 Criterions)
