What is the difference between a shore reading and a durometer reading?

example

trc purple is a 35-40 shore

rc4less purple is a 45 durometer

it gets really confusing. I wish the manufacturs could get together and make a standard. so no matter what company a purple is the same tire.

Durometer is the tool used to get a shore reading.

From what I understand....shore and duro rating are not the same. Shore #'s are typically about 5 units less that than a duro #.

for example a 40 duro reading = aprox a 35 shore.

Anyone who has a durometer....what unit measurement is on the dial? is it shore?

Not exactly...

"Shore" is not a unit of measure.
Neither is "durometer".

A durometer is a measuring instrument (tool).
Shore, is the test you perform with a durometer (Shore test).

So to help clarify... a correct description would be:
"I performed a shore test on my tires, with a durometer,
and got a reading of 28".

So.. one could say, I got a 28 shore..
I got a 28 durometer.
And most people understand what you are talking about.
Although neither have anything to do with the 28, in reality.

Hope this helps....

That was what I initially thought myself. Then I got a different story from what I consider a very credible source. I personally don't have a durometer so I haven't expirimented w/ taking say a TRC Pink(30 shore) and tested it with a Maxmon Durometer. Or take say an RC4Less Pink(manufacture spec'd 35 durometer reading) and compare it as well. Anyway...maybe Bruce from RC4Less or Murdock can chime in.

maybe this can shed some light. durometer is the tool shore value is the reading on the durometer. a shore valure of 28 means nothing if you don't know what shore scale your using. shore "A" is used for foams. check out www.mcmaster.com (http://www.mcmaster.com) and in the search area type 2122 then look at page 3276 those should explain it all.

You can simplify things too by buying your tires from one source and then you know what you getting. Whether it be myself (Murdock R/C), bsr or whichever company then you will know the rubber and how it performs and which hardness to go with. Feel free to call or email anytime and Ill be happy to shoot some ideas on compounds to achieve your goal. As well as clearing up any questions you may have on the different rubber. MURDOCKRC@AOL.COM It isnt as hard as it seems really. It just knowing what your buying
