View Full Version : Putnam Propulsion Snowbirds Results
Todd Putnam 02-21-2005, 12:45 PM Just thought we'd post a quick results/thankyou thread for Putnam Propulsion...
Putnam Propulsion's latest brush release, #EFB-180 not only TQ'd 1/10th Stock Oval with Chris Ulbrik, but went on to claim the "Hat Trick" in 1/12 On Road Stock with Mark Smyka winning for the third year in a row. This is the same brush combination Mark used to Win the Cleveland Indoor Championships, and the same that Bobby Flack used to claim victory in Stock Sedan at last year's Novak race as well.
Mark Smyka also chose the Putnam Propulsion X-Compound standup brush to TQ the 19 turn Sedan Class at the Snowbirds.
This is the same brush that Arnie Fie used to TQ'd and Win the 19 Turn Modified Class at the 2004 ROAR Carpet Oval NAts, and that Rick Talbot used to TQ and Win the 19 Turn Modified Class at the 2003 ROAR Carpet Oval Nats.
The #EFB-180 is the same standard Laydown brush combination that is in our "Excessive Force" Blueprinted and Dyno-tuned Stock and C2-Based 19 turn motors.
The #EFB-XBR X Compound Standup Modified Brush is what comes standard in our ARCOR/ROAR Handwound 19 turn Modified Motors.
Congrats and Thankyou go out to Mark, Chris and everyone else who chose Putnam Propulsion to keep them out front at the Snowbirds. Thanks for all your efforts, results and support!

Is the EFB-180 a Finishline F- based brush??
I didnt see it listed on your site??
Todd Putnam 02-21-2005, 03:04 PM No, we only run our proprietary compounds. The 180's are (1) 140 and (1) 170 with the trailing edges removed...same as what comes in our tuned motors. Chris did try the F-Brush as a comparison, and went about a lap slower than he did with our 180's. The F-Brushes make sustantially less watts, (electrical horsepower) which is why he was much slower with them vs. our brushes.
As for our website, it is in desperate need of a facelift, implants, and updates. Many of our new products aren't listed, like the 160's, 180's, 1/12th bodies, brush cutter, etc...
Hope this helps...

erock1331 02-21-2005, 03:10 PM Ok thanks for the info.
rcavenger 02-21-2005, 08:08 PM todd,
How wide is the 180 brush? also, what spring combo did chris run?
Todd Putnam 02-21-2005, 09:13 PM The 180's are about .180" wide +/-, (hence the number). I built his motor with a red spring on the positive, green spring on the negative. I broke in the brushes for 400 seconds @ 2 volts w/ a 2" fan.
I utilized our new comm drops during break in. Our comm drops haven't been released yet, but stay tuned...They have been a work-in-progress since my days at Trinity, and have delivered excellent results in both stock and 19 turn racing. I used these on Chris' TQ motor, and the motor he TQ'd and Won the club race with. These were also used on Smyka's TQ 19 turn motor as well as his Winning stock motor.
Hope this helps...

Z-Main Loser 02-21-2005, 11:26 PM Is the EFB-180 brush available for purchase from you? How does this brush compare to the Trinity XXX brush and your green shunt brush?
scott law 02-21-2005, 11:37 PM Z-Main Loser,
The EFB-140 brush is the Blue shunted med silver brush used on the negative side and the EFB-170 is the Green shunted high silver brush used on the positive side.
Hope this helps.
Scott
Z-Main Loser 02-22-2005, 12:31 AM Thanks Scott I get it now.
"Chris Ulbrik" 02-22-2005, 08:05 PM Thanks Todd for the great motors at the birds, they ran awsome.
Todd Putnam is definetly the man for stock motors.

A good motor is nothing without the car and wheel man. Nice job again Chris, glad we cured your horsepower issues...

Todd thanks for sharing all the advice on how you tune your motors. My question is for 19t oval what springs are you using and are you recommending going anything less then 36 on the timing. Well I hate to high jack an oval thread but here goes. What springs do you recommend for TC stock and 12th on-road stock, as well as Spec 19t (reedy flame, Lizzard 2)? Thanks for the great products.

Todd Putnam 02-23-2005, 10:34 AM Brian: For 19 turn Oval, it depends on the can. If it's a TDK FB-9 magnet, (like what's in the Ti,D5,V2 and Cobalt Mod cans) 24 degrees works better for us. When a weaker magnet is used, like the Ultrabird motors, I still like 24 degrees but you can make the higher timing work as well. The trick to 24 degress is finding the rollout. You can be off in rollout more @ 36 degrees, but if you work and nail the rollout @ 24, you'll be faster.
I use a spring that is stiffer than a red but a bit lighter than a purple for starters. If you need more bottom end, increase spring tension.
On Road Springs:
1/12th: Green
Sedan Stock/19: (varies) We've won w/ purples on both all the way down to a red + and a green -. Same rules apply: if the motor isn't falling off or glazing the brushes, and you have ample bottom end, you can lighten the springs.
Hope this helps...

B-man777 02-25-2005, 11:45 AM dear todd:when will your web site be updated with 2005 news and product info?what i see on there now seams a little outdated.who are your team drivers for 2005?good luck in 2005
Todd,do you have some baseline numbers when using a turbodyno @ 5 volts for the different amp steps.
Thanks Andy
Todd Putnam 03-01-2005, 12:15 PM Bman: I hear ya...I don't update the site myself, but the guy who does needs me to give him all the update details. Tough to find time with how buried we are in the shop...
Andy: Testing @ 5 volts, I focus on the 24-26 amp range. Over 70 watts @ 24 amps is pretty good...75 is killer. Each dyno reads a bit different, but that will get you close.
Thanks,
Todd Putnam

Todd Putnam 03-01-2005, 12:18 PM McCallister: be patient...we get 100+ emails a day, and have a backlog of over 1,000 from the Snowbirds...some are junk, but still a ton to read.
You can always call the shop, (in fact I'd suggest it over email.) I can talk and work easier than I can type...
Thanks,

HECKLER 03-05-2005, 11:33 PM first of all i would like to thank TODD for giving me a chance many years ago when everyone else would not even talk to me it was a long road to win three years in a row and the one thing i didnot change in the three years was bruches i had three different cars three different batteries companys but the same brush company this by far was the hardest year to win but thanks to todd for the massive rip i got to the front and left the field in the dust . the only think i wish is i could make my club motors go as fast as the motors he built for me (guess he holding out on the juice)..

JW Housley 03-06-2005, 07:37 AM I am not getting as much RPM as some but my Torque Watts and EFF look good (to me anyway:) )........listed below are 3 of my best Monsters that I tuned on yesterday. Listing only 25 and 28 amp loads at 5.0 Volts.
#2
RPM Torq watt EF Amps
13590 8.3 83 66 24.9
12530 9.2 85 61 27.8
#1
13570 8.5 85 68 24.9
12271 9.5 86 61 27.8
#3
13679 7.7 78 62 24.9
12494 8.7 80 57 27.8
Todd Putnam 03-07-2005, 04:27 PM Mark: If the past is representative of what the future holds, we're in for some fun...
Andy:The second motor you listed (76 watts @ 24 amps) is a much better motor... 2-3 Watts is a significant difference on a Turbo Dyno, and will be noticeable on the track.
Hope this helps,
Todd Putnam
