View Full Version : Brushless Racing in North Carolina
Is anyone Racing the brushless motors anywhere in NC ? I have a Novak Super Stock set up and would like to get into a class where I could race Oval with it. I think I would be able to focus on Chassis set up if I don't have to spend so much time working on motors. Also battery run time is not as critical with the brushless motor's longer run times. Would really like to get into something with spec batteries and tires. Is there anyone already doing this? Or anyone iteressted in starting a class? I have gotten away from racing oval for a litle over two years but am really missing it. I live in Candler NC just outside Asheville. Thanks Ralf
DynoMoHum 02-16-2005, 08:49 AM What motor do you have? I'm told the 4300 runs about the same speed as a 19T set at zero degrees. Perhaps if you can't find someone running specificly brushless, you might be able to sneek into a 19t zero degree race... these are normaly basicly a spec race of sorts.
oval racer 2 02-16-2005, 09:12 AM WE ARE PLANNING ON RUNNING THE 5800 SYSTEM ON 4 CELLS AT THUNDER ALLEY IN WILSON,NC THIS SUMMER. MAY EVEN RUN NASTRUCK BODIES. CHECK IT OUT AT WWW.THUNDER-ALLEY.COM

You guys are really going to enjoy the brushless thing, I know we have here in Macon GA. Are you running the 5800 open or in the stock mode. What is the runline on the track?
oval racer 2 02-16-2005, 08:35 PM yea, we have been running them for a year and half at various tracks. one low banked 200' concrete oval, one 215' flat carpet oval and the new track is 240' super high banked concrete oval. we have ran a few times at the new track w/ 6cell open mode w/ car bodies. we are thinking of running the nastruck w/ 4cell limited mode. we have be turning 3.5-3.6 sec laps w/ 6cell in open mode, so i feel like 4 cell in limited mode should run in the low 4 sec range, maybe even high 3's.
btw, echeconnee are you going to daytona to run in the brushless class, i am going to run in the .12 class, may bring my brushless car as well!!
I wish I could get a few guys in the Asheville area to run brushless at C&W Raceway. Nice track. Ralf 13

There are 3 of us coming to run nitro and 4 to run brushless, look forward to seeing you there. We will be in the Big red trailer
I really miss racing oval and want to get back in but am tired of all the time and money spent on motors building, rebuilding, owning and maintaining a lathe, and the dyno/track testing (sold my dyno and lathe) to find the "right" motor etc.. I race for the fun and enjoyment of racing, not for the "challenge" of building motors. Guess if I can't find a local brushless class I'll just buy on offroad truck and bash around in the dirt. Ralf,
That's the problem with brushless you either love it or hate it,it just hasn't caught on yet around here.As for C&W those guys run pretty much all spec, six cell and the likes.I rarely use my dyno anymore just for a check every now and then, really you don't need a dyno to run spec. The spec motors either run or they don't.Build it, break it in and run it,no real big deal.Just remember the guys at C&W have been racin for a looong time and are very experienced.
mbeach2k 02-17-2005, 06:49 PM up hear in michigan the brushless move is on, a lot of people are switching. i have been running the 5800 and the 4300 since sept. and i like the 4300 the best. if i had to switch back to brushed i would get out of the hobby.

And likewise,if I had to switch to brushless I would get out of the hobby.
mbeach2k 02-18-2005, 03:23 PM i'm glad you like that part of the hobby and i'm sure that there are many people out there such as yourself that do, but i don't. i played the dyno wars and worked on motors for hours on end , and i would much rather work on the handling. everyone is different and there will always be a segment for everyone i just found mine in brushless so i thought i would express my view. i wasn't trying to force by belief onto everyone else, niether was i trying to upset anyone.
I know for a fact that all the motor work, equipment needed, and it's cost is what keeps a lot of people from even trying Oval racing. If Oval is going to grow they had better create some classes for people who want to race brushless and not spend all the time and effort it takes to be competitive with motor building. Ralf 13

I wasn't implying I was mad or that I your view doesn't matter cause it does, brushless is fine if that's what your into no problem here.Motors are kinda funny though you can spend hours and end up with no gains, but if you really know the particulars you can tune motors in no time.Chassis tuning is really where your speed will come in though, and once you learn the particulars there you will be able to make the car fast,no matter what.I rarely even use a dyno anymore, the speed is on the track not on the dyno.
burbs 02-19-2005, 11:18 PM the 5800 on 4 cells, on all of our tracks, is exactly the same speed as open 19 turn....
also my buddie TQ"d the ROAR paved nats in brushless and 19t.. his time was only a few hundreths off his 19t time..

DynoMoHum 02-20-2005, 12:05 AM Near as we can tell, brushless Novak 5800 is just a little bit faster on our local flat carpet oval track that is about the same size as the snowbirds track. But then, I don't know that any really good driver has tried to run both on the same day and/or under identical condtions. Most who have tried the brushless around here have very little desire to run brushed. Well there are a few who choose to run brushless and brushed (say stock brushed and 5800 brushless)... but I personaly don't know of anyone who's tried brushless and didn't like it.
I have had plenty of fun learning about and tuning motors, but somewhat like Pepe says (although with slightly differnt ultimate feelings about it) I have come to the conclusion that it's not that hard to tune a motor... and Motors don't make that big of a differance in how fast you run on the track... but around here, the only spec class we have is Legends, and well I got bored with that a couple years ago. Now, I don't have time to fiddle with motors, and don't like the expense of changing brushes and such... So, in the end, for me, it's why bother with brushes? I can go just as fast, if not slightly faster with brushless motors, and I don't EVER have to fiddle with the darn thing... I haven't sold my dyno yet, but I'm sure thinking about it. Also all my brushes, springs, arms, cans, etc... don't leave the house. I'm reducing my pit box size too... I'm hopefull to take about half as much to the track as I used to.
so pepe if you had to run brushless you would give up oval racing? why? i run both brushed and brushless and have fun with both.i will say try brushless before you poo poo it as it is fun and alot of cost is eliminated.what it does is allow youmore time to work on your car,eat lunch and shoot the bull with your friends.
I had four friends interested enough to come and watch a race or come down to my workshop while I was working on my race equiment and all four lost interest when thay saw all the quipment needed to be competetive, especially the stuff I had to work on motors (Dyno/laptop, lathe, brush cutter, assortment of springs, spacers etc.) and then all the time it took to get a motor really set up (polishing the bronze bushings, comm shafts, etc). They all were hoping just to have fun racing. There is too much time and money spent on motors and batteries, brushless eliminates a lot of that cost. It eliminates the motor costs (replacement motors and comms, brushes, springs, etc.) and makes the batteries less important, at least as far as run time is concerned. Some of the local tracks, especiall in the midwest are addressing this problem and have gotten a lot of interest in brushless as a class and are racing brushless on a regular basis, ROAR, ARCOR, NORRCA, and whoever else better get going and get brushless as an organized class, there are a ton of people who just do not want to put out all the work and money needed to race brushed motors. My $.02 Ralf 13
