Barooose 02-28-2005, 03:01 PM 4th Annual Cheeseland Classic. Pat Hockers described it as old school Saturday night short track racing. I think that is very accurate. 71 laps in 4 minutes. Short tight and fast. Practice was very exciting with 8 or more cars trying to get up to speed with varying skill levels. Not for the timid, but exhilarating. With just under 2 hours per round everyone had plenty of time to wrench, talk trash and particpate in a few pranks.
Mentzel T.Q.ed the first round with his brand new C.W. car and I started wondering whether this may be a repeat of last years race. But Cory the Iceman stepped it up and took the final T.Q. with the only 70 lap run. Makus sat 2nd, Wood 3rd, Pat Simkins 4th, Danny “The Dude” 5th and Green Bays own Buddy Paul 6th on the grid.
The A started out clean except for the Dude who lifted for someone ahead on the second lap and hooked his car nose first against the center board. On the next lap Buddy and Wood got shuffled around back as the rest of the freight train took off. Cory, Makus and Pat were moving out with Buddy, Wood and the Dude, getting back in the rthym. Shortly Wood gets by Buddy and everyone settles into a choreographed dance of cars looking for the fastest line and seeking their opponents weaknesses. All the cars are pretty well matched as Cory is driving fast enough to protect his position without putting himself in danger. About the halfway mark Wood gets past Pat who is having some very tiny glitches on one end of the track but it’s just enough to slow him down a tick and open a door for Wood to sneak through. The leaders are still turning 3.4 lap times and time is running out. The Dude is running in shadow of 2nd place but he’s still 2 laps down from his early problem. Cory finishes a half lap ahead of Makus with Wood in third just over a lap down. Pat Simkins held his breath for the last minute and finished 1 second behind Wood. Mentzel managed to finish 5th about 1 second of Buddy. It was one of the most exciting and cleanest races I’ve been honored to participate in for quite awhile. Nice little plaques for 1st through 3rd in all the mains also.
The after race celebrations at Hooters had close to thirty people and it was a blast. And yes Ed and Wood got the birthday treat.
Thanks ProStar for another great race and thanks for listening to our suggestions for changing the track.
17driver 03-05-2005, 08:16 AM Glad I could be their for Burby's farwell race.(lol)
