In the "never ending quest" of tuning stock motors, the opportunity to have a couple of P2K's zapped arrived. PHILSTU, a member of our forums, offered up his motor zapping machine to try to bring back from the dead a couple of P2K's that I purchased used.
When I received the P2K's, I cut the comms, installed new brushes, added my favorite springs..... you know the drill .... and heard monster rpm's out of these stockers. But, there is always a but...very low watts, torque, efficiency... etc.
Phil builds the motor zappers...his design and craftsmanship....you may contact him about purchasing a zapper (they are not cheap... but of the highest quality) or zapping motors.
First.... a little race testing.
I did not run either motor in my R/C's before sending them off....I knew what they would do. The spin up time approached 10 seconds...and I do not race on a track with a straight that long....so, I nixed the idea of running the motors.
As luck would have it, I did loan both motors to a friend for this weekend's racing. He attended an event by HiTech Racing in Southern California. He practiced with a tried and true Mid 2.... then looked at his heat sheet .... and noted that many of the hot shoes were attending the race.... and decided to break out one of these P2K's.
He ran the motor three times that day...... had TQ after the end of the first round (lost TQ before qualifying was over).... and ended up 4th in the Expert A TC Stock class.... not bad... considering the company that was on the driver's stand. (good job Clint!!!)
Here is the nitty gritty....
[IMG-LEFT]http://www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/attachment.php?attachmentid=14946[/IMG-LEFT]The motors were zapped when I bought them... as the watts and low torque indicates. On the right track, this might be the motor (would have to be a HUGE track). Both motors had extremely long spinup times...at or near 10 seconds... now... both are under 5 seconds.
P2K #1 has the highest torque of any stock motor on the Robitronics dyno that has been across my bench.... and P2K #2 has the highest efficiency of any stock motor across my dyno as well.
I will provide a long term report as the season progresses... so stay tuned.
In conclusion of this write up, IMHO, a high quality zapper, in the right hands and knowledge, can restore or make a stock motor stand up on it's own.
