I spotted this one today at a local Wal Mart for $72 Canadian. Jason and the Argonauts, the 7th Voyage of Sinbad and three others. Anyone heard anything about this set?

Yeah, they've divided the exisiting Harryhausen DVDs into two boxed sets. On set has the sci-fi stuff (Earth Vs. The Flying Saucers, 20 Million Miles to Earth, etc.) and the set you saw has the fantasy/adventure discs.

That price is pretty good considering the absurd pricing structure adopted by Sony. Most of those discs cost around $30.00CDN each when issued new (frankly, Sony is still living in 1998 with regards to selling DVD). The individual discs now vary in price...probably averaging about $20.00CDN each.

A little math tells us that $72.00 ain't half bad for a box of Sony DVDs.*

*I just saw a 3 dics set of GODZILLA movies from Sony for $82.99CDN!

I saw 2 sets at Amazon.ca

One is the Legendary Monsters Series that you mention which has:

Jason and the Argonauts [WS]
Jason and the Argonauts [FS]
The 7th Voyage of Sinbad
Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger
The Golden Voyage of Sinbad [WS]
The Golden Voyage of Sinbad [FS]
The 3 Worlds of Gulliver

and the other is Legendary Science Fiction Series.

It has:

H.G. Wells' First Men in the Moon
20 Million Miles to Earth
Earth vs. the Flying Saucers
Mysterious Island
It Came From Beneath the Sea

There seems to be a lot of extra stuff too. Don't know if any of it is new though.

There are 4 others not included that I have:

Beast From 20,000 fathoms
Clash of the Titans
One Million Years B.C.
Valley of Gwangi

Probably on a different "label".

I already have them all so not worth it to me, but if you don't, looks like 2 nice collections. Just have to get the others separately.

James :)

Correct on those last 4 James. I should have mentioned that. The boxed sets are the Sony movies. The last 4 are (IIRC) Warner Brothers and Fox.

No new extras in the boxes...just the stuff already on the individual discs.

Thanks Brent and James!

Do you know how long have these sets been in the market? I don't recall seeing anything on DigitalBits about them. I certainly would have put them on my Christmas list if I had known about them!

I don't have any of the "Fantasy / Adventure" stuff at all so I'm tempted to pop back to Wal Mart and pick up that set. None of the other local shops have it.

I have most of the science fiction stuff already, but I still need a few. They are:

20 Million Miles to Earth
It Came From Beneath the Sea
Clash of the Titans
Valley of Gwangi

I'll have to check Amazon.ca to see if those are still available.

Brent: I picked up "Beast From 20,000 fathoms" at HMV just before Christmas for $25.99. You are certainly right about the pricing on the things. Its much more economical to buy the sets than the individual discs.

The repackaging of individual existing DVD's into boxed sets rarely gets much publicity. Most "coming attraction" sites don't regard them as new releases so they often go unnoticed. Some of those Harryhausen DVDs are several years old.

I've recently come across several examples of existing DVDs that were repackaged at a SUBSTANTIAL saving. I just bought the ED WOOD boxed set from Image for $49.99CDN. It has 6 DVDs...some of which were originally sold for $35.00CDN each.

I also picked up another 4 DVD boxed set for $50.00CDN. It had two "Starman" DVDs plus a couple of sword & sandal epics. Those Starman DVDs actually sell at HMV for $39.95 CDN EACH! The normal price in Canada would be closer to $30.00CDN each. But the boxed set price worked out to $12.50CDN a disc.

It's tricky trying to keep up with everything.
