I have Traxxas slash an SC10 with Velineom Brushless speed controls in both of them with stock brushed motors. Looking to put 17.5 brushless motors in them to run on the dirt tracks. What are you guys an girls out there running an are you using the Velineon speed control? Thanks Ron.
Use the Velineon brushless motor, especially if you can get one from a 4x4 model. it'a rated at 3500kv which would be better (faster) then the 17.5 depending on what your going for.
If your looking to stay in stock class then yea the 17.5 is what you would need, otherwise the you can run 13.5 in it as well.
Thanks. Yes the Velineon motor is fast. Yes i am looking to stay in the stock class but tiered of buying the brushed motors. Will a 17.5 brushless motor from a diffrent brand work with that speed control? If so what is a good one? Or do I need to get a new set up?
Hobby wing makes a 17.5 sensorless motor that will work with the VXL speedo.Check with your RD first and make sure the sensorless 17.5 will be legal to run.If its a go the motor is 39.99 @ hobbypartz.com...By the way the VXL will run a sensored motor- look in the front under the on/off/program button. There is a sensor port there with a cap over it.I ran a VXL speedo with a novak 17.5 for quite a while after I first went brushless.
You can try the 17.5 on your esc and just don't hook up the sensor cable. But you will find out real quick a major cogging issue. Offroad does not need the turbo or timing crap. Once you go sensored you won't look back.
If your gonna spend the money on brushless your better off moving up to MOD Corr and get the 13.5 or Velineon. I'm not sure how the stock class is in your area. Some of the tracks I've been to, don't usually get enough stockers to run a class so they all run in the Mod Corr class. Unfortunately it also mean more upgrades to be competitve, but just a thought.
That would be a sweeeet setup but a little pricey. There are lots of great deals on GTB's nowadays. They have always worked very well for me in off road applications.
 Thanks to everyone that repied. I am using a Novak Ballistic SC System. So far I had to change gearing to 75/28 for my sc10. Find out tonight at the dirt race how it goes an the motor temps.
Truck ran About 170 deg. Called for after 5 min race to be 160 deg to 175 deg. Not the fastest out there but i think it was do to my set up. Very happy with it all. Just remember if you use the Novak set up in a sc10 you need gear it 28/75.
On my Novak Ballistic 3S 17.5 set up. This week was the second time I ran it an the motor shut down in both of the race. Talked to Novak tech this morning an he said it ran to hot. An the motor is no good an basicly said have a nice day. Thought this system was desighed for the short couse truck to make them more reliable. That was $180.00 waisted an I will never BUY another Novak product.

You are blaming Novak because you didn't gear it correctly to run cool enough to last?
You can cook any motor with improper gearing. This past weekend a guy cooked a Castle 5700 in a Sprint car. He had it geared 24:75. I run mine 17:87. Funny thing was he was so concerned about "performance" that he cut off the nice Castle Bullets to solder the motor wires to the ESC wires, but couldn't be bothered to gear it correctly so it would last. That is not the fault of Castle or their product.
Might have been $180 wasted, but it wasn't waisted.
